Notes:
Occhi del Lupo is a Wild Fermented saison aged in puncheon wine barrels with a hefty amount of Barbera grape must. This beer is a showcase for Barbera, a lesser known but none-the-less classic, Northern Italian heritage grape varietal native to Piedmonte. Pronounced notes of red cherry, lemon rind, and over-ripe strawberries with a grounding hint of earthy complexity and just enough acidic zest to round out the body and finish with a plethora of alluring, soft tannin and lingering impressions of plum, blackberries, lavender, and violets. Evocative of the long, starlight vigils of Piedmontese hunters and shepherds alike sipping wine to maintain one’s courage in the still, cool nights of the hills of Monferrato echoing with the sparse, piercing howls of the last of the true Italian wolves.

750 ml bottle into a tulip glass. Had 4/11/22. Obtained as a FOBAB 2021 to go purchase.
Pours a clear, darker pink, with a half inch quickly dissipating head and a ring of foam that trails down the glass. Aromas of wine, grapes, cherries, cranberries, light lemon, oak as it warms. Tastes a little tart and sour, earthy. Flavors of wine, grapes, cherries, lemon, light cranberries, a little funk, oak- again, as it warms. Smooth, a great lighter medium body, appropriately carbonated.
Very enjoyable. The grape must is terrific, as is the base beer. A solid effort.

Appearance: Arrives cranberry colored with a two finger head that fades to a ringlet; a few shards linger
Smell: Barbera wine brings cherry and strawberry tones with just a hint of oak
Taste: Fruit forward with the cherry and strawberry joined by the Barbera wine flavors; the sweeter fruit is complemented by the tart wild yeast tones with the finish being a balance of the two aspects
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation; not too puckery
Overall: Very approachable with nice fruit complemented by the barrel treatment
