Notes:
Grisette style Ale mixed fermented with Belgian Saison and French Farmhouse Ale yeasts.
Celebrating our 1,000th batch of beer, we took inspiration from one of our first collaborations. Brewed with Three Floyds all the way back in 2013, Tonnerre Neige (Thunder Snow) was our first commercial batch of beer and debuted during our preview pop-up Mischief at Black Rock Pub. Essentially it was a mixed fermented cross between a Belgian-style golden ale and a "Super Saison." So with this release as something of an homage, we pit Belgian saison yeast against French farmhouse ale yeast. And to echo the constant bickering between Belgium’s French and Flemish speaking regions, we let these two yeasts duke it out in a grisette wort that creates complex notes of black pepper phenols, mild fruit and bubblegum with a dry and spritzy finish. And yes, clocking in at 6% puts this a little higher than the traditional grisettes enjoyed by miners over the last 200+ years, but we think you'll find it no less refreshing.

Murky but mostly clear over time golden body, full finger of white foam. Faint barnyard funk with big yeast in nose. Taste is led by this yeast with grainy qualities, lingering lemon and pungent berry, but all so light, floral hints in the background. Want more potency here, even from this more reserved style. Feel is yeast driven, light, airy, delicate, but again no depth to cling to halfway down the glass

Okay, I fucked this up. For some reason I thought this was a kolsch and poured it into a pilsner glass, and I'm like that's not a kolsch and the aroma is way too yeasty and fruity. So I looked it up and poured it into a tulip. Beautiful slightly hazy straw gold with lasting flat head. Anyhow... bready lemon pepper aroma. Sweet fruity tropical banana tangy with long peppery finish. Medium body and lively fine carbo. Somewhat aggressive for a grisette but still fucking delicious.

A: The beer is hazy yellow in color and has a high amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger and a half high white head that has excellent retention properties and consistently left a quarter finger high head covering the surface and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of Belgian yeast are present in the nose along with notes of grainy malts.
T: The taste follows the smell, except that the yeast also lends hints of spicy flavors.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink and is a good representation of a grisette.
Serving type: can

Released 1/7/22; drank 3/13/22 @ the Yarchives.
See-through dull yellow appearance.
A rough pour yielded a HUGE white head; a thick curtain of tree-rung lace.
Peanut butter & mild farmyard funk notes in the nose.
Medium thin mouthfeel.
Peanut butter & mild farmyard funk flavors.
Simple and a bit odd, but overall quite tasty. I'd have another!

I am honored to be the first BA review of Off Color's 1,000th batch.
I bought a 4-pack at The Mousetrap, but Kilo Beer will get Chicagoland distribution... so please comment on my start here.
I taste the two yeasts and, as Off Color suggests, there is no two-part harmony... as there is not between the two Belgian cultures. (The Belgians recently could not form a government for several years as the two cultures wouldn't play nice.) Despite lacking harmony, Kilo makes an interesting song... but the experiment is a bit off-key and slightly dissonant; but can be corrected.
Kilo's Looks offer a huge billowy, big bubble head on the pour. But initially has a bit too much clarity for how cloudy table ales usually are; but a nice golden. By the final pour, Kilo is cloudy enough; but the foam is long-gone. Common Look elements said, I must comment on the genius of the label (for which I give Huge rating Hugs.) I'm glad I finally looked at the can closely because it is hilarious. Off Color's thematic mice are listening to the lecture on the exponential powers of 1. Those powers do not add up as on the label. But isn't that true ? Powers rarely add up correctly. Listen to the plight of mice and learn. It might even explain The Ukraine.
All that said..... Smells are mostly malts being pushed into thinking they are apples or pears. Tastes indicate the peppery yeast has won the struggle against the juicier one and Kilo finishes semi-dry and a bit lemony. While medium-mouthed and surprisingly wheaty soft given the yeast tension, this is a good palate-cleansing table ale.
I put my first Kilo to a tough test against an Indian dal. (usually clean lagers are best.) But Kilo did not disappoint. I will test the 4-packs remaining Kilos against other kitchens.
Overall, Off Color's invention and humor shows through. And having the "yeasts fight it out" is part of that cleverness. But the yeasts probably are too busy fighting to produce the protein swirls of a great saison. So while Apex Predator may wonder if sibling rivalries will develop, Kilo is not in the same class. A votre Sante and Proost Gezondheid! You see the conflict?
3/5/22 Had the second can, edited the above and basically summarize now: this yeast experiment says more about life than about how to make great saisons. But, I nonetheless will keep the remaining two cans of the 4-pack for myself and keep count over @ UnTappd.
