16oz Can

Canned: 9/15/15

Thanks a million, Wilson! Scythe dumps into the glass with polished copper body while sporting crisp clarity. The antique white foam rises easily on the pour and settles at two+ fingers for a good span. The head is dense and leaves behind big chunky, sticky lace down the glass as it recedes. Lace that will have to be scrubbed clean. This is what an IPA should look like.

Damn! The nose on this guy is potent and bold. Big notes of citrus runs with a crisp, yet spicy rye note. The citrus is grapefruit and orange in spades. Pure grapefruit juice off the bat with orange pith and oils a close second. The grapefruit takes on a bit of a sweeter character as it moves along reminiscent of brown sugar broiled. Last, but certainly not least, is candied citrus peel. There is even a squeeze of lemon for good measure. And the rye? Oh, the rye! The malt base is pretty simple sugar cookie sweet with soft caramel backing. Mouthwatering!

The flavor profile nails the nose. Big citrus upfront before being met, and even overtaken, by spicy rye. While the citrus is big at first it mellows through the finish but every aspect I mentioned in the nose is present in the flavor. The rye kicks in heavy mid-palate with a spiciness that compliments the grapefruit and orange beautifully with the spice growing until the swallow. A touch of sugar from the malt bill keeps this beer from being a runaway train but it's light enough to feel the full effect of the hop profile and spice characteristics.

While the body sits squarely in the middle of the spectrum the lively carbonation makes this beer an insanely easy one to put away. It's bitter upfront but grows more so with each passing drink. Halfway through the glass the back of the throat is toast. While that's the case it never gets tiring. This is a delicious beer.

Scythe is like the big brother to Founder's Red's Rye. It's bright, bitter, spicy, and delicious. The citrus is huge and the rye even huger. I could drink this beer by the gallon. Thanks again, Wil!

The beer has a dark amber color. The aroma is rye and tropical fruits. The taste is a big bready malt followed by delicious tropical fruits. Very underrated

Appearance - Pours clear copper color with thick dense off white head. Nice lacing all around the glass.

Aroma - lots of citrus, grapefruit, orange peel hints of floral and rye. Touch of spice as well.

Taste - Very similar to the aroma, tangerine, orange, little less grapefruit in the taste. Pine, hints of rye great flavors work well together.

Feel - Medium bodied, well carbonated. Nice bite not as dry as I expected.

Canned 6/15/17, poured into a Duvel glass

Copper-orange color with a inch of creamy head. Sheet lacing. Ring of head remains.
Pretty strong citrus hop scent, rye, sea spray.
Enjoyable balanced rye and prominent hopping. Grapefruity.
Smooth, plentiful carbs, low bitterness.
Some really strong Rye IPA's available, this holds it's own.

Appearance: dark hazy orange color with a 2" head that slowly falls to a thick foam covering.

Aroma: strong earthy and pine notes are very pleasant on the nose.

Taste: strong malt profile with grapefruit, pine, spicy rye, some nuttiness, and some ripe fruit sweetness.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Light crispness throughout with some dryness arriving late. Long lasting aftertaste.

Overall: a great rye IPA that has a great flavor profile.

Pours a clear copper color with a one finger beige head that falls to ringed scum.

Aroma is nice malt with spicy rye notes and good doses of tropical fruit hops.

Taste is like the nose malt base has some spicy rye but its mainly over powered by the rye and hops.Finish is nice grapefruit citrus hops mingled with the rye. Always enjoy the rye hop combo.

Mouthfeel is fairly peppy carbonated lighter medium body.

Overall an enjoyable brew, solid beer and an enjoyable rye.

@ Burial

Served up in a mason jar, dark amber with a nice, creamy head on top. Aromas of grapefruit, lemon, and lime over some warm biscuits and a smell like crushing dried hop cones in your hand. Fresh hoppy flavors stay mainly citrusy with grapefruit, orange, and lemon. Rye only seems to add a subtle rustic edge and the malts contribute a moderate sweetness. Medium bodied, dry, oily, and bitter. Nice!

Appearance: Pours a clear copper color; the inch thick head leaves quite a few dots around the glass

Smell: The crystal malt aroma is quite strong, with herbal/spicy rye tones and tropical fruit; the label says blueberries and, perhaps it is the power of suggestion, but they are definitely in the profile

Taste: Caramel and herbal/spicy rye flavor jut forward, with the hops kicking in; building bitterness with pineapple and pine (don't get the blueberry on the palate, at all); the finish is balanced

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A nicely balanced IPA with an interesting twist because of the malt bill (and this, coming from someone who doesn't particularly like malts to get in the way of a good IPA)

A - Nice clear dark copper color with a thin, but dense creamy white head.

S - Citrus with a lot of spicy rye, a hint of herbal presence, a little bit of tang.

T - Some orange and sweet red grapefruit citrus with a predominant spicy presence from start to finish. Leaves a coating of spicy citrus in the mouth.

M - Heavy medium body to light heavy, gentle carbonation gives way to a velvet finish.

O - Dig the spice citrus combo - worth trying. Lacks in the aroma, at a 3.75, that's generous.
