Gang Of BladesGang Of Blades
Notes: The oldest of trees beckon the widest of blades. But the biggest require the help of a gang of blades, teaming up to provide the deepest array of cuts. This DIPA is born from an arsenal of ingredients. A pils base is fortified with NC-malted wheat, while Amarillo, Mandarina Bavaria, Simcoe, and other hops feed off the tropical juiciness of a house wild yeast. Expect tangerine, pineapple and mango from this super hop juice.

Light hazy pale yellow color. Tropical hops start to finish with subtle malts to add density. Very good tropical DIPA and not overly fruit flavored.

On draft at Churchkey in DC. Poured into a 14 oz becher.

Darker orange haze. Had abt a fingers worth of lacy dense foam.
Smells of tangerine and orange zest. Grassy. Little crackers malt.
Lots of tangerine and citrus note. There is a piney grassy hoppy goodness on the mid palate. Little lemongrass in there. Has a warming tone from the 8.3%.
Nice beer really enjoy it.

This is a pretty interesting IPA. Big, bold, bitter flavors with ripe tropical fruits and noticeable alcohol heat. The finish is party bitter from hops and the slightly funky yeast makes it feel even more bitter. The 55 IBUs listed on the can seems way low. Glad I tried it but not in love with it. nb

Poured into a snifter. Huge aroma right out of the can - tropical fruit, tangerines, pine, and resin. One of the best-smelling beers I've had. Moderately hazy golden color with a modest head. Pineapple flavor up front, along with tangerine, mango, some pine, some resin, and a repeat of the tropical fruit on the finish. Not particularly dry and medium-bodied. A bit hot with noticeable warming, maybe more than expected even at this ABV. Outstanding beer.

Pours a murky yellow with normal carbonation. Aroma is very noticeable and smells of tropical fruit, a little citrus. Creamy mouthfeel but not too much like an oatmeal stout (in my opinion). Taste is of hops with a little funk, a little perceived sweetness, with lots of hoppy depth. I feel like I can pick up some citra and mosaic along with some tropical, slightly funky yeast esters. Very drinkable, I think the abv helps balance out the hop explosion.

Always a fan of Burial, and Burial IPAs are certainly no exception. Let's see what we have going on here.

Pours a dark golden yellow with a solid head.

Definitely a tropical nose, but nothing too new. It smells like a well made IPA and that it's got a good hop/malt balance. I know I have to actually try it to say that for sure, I just feel like it's worth pointing out since I find this in IPAs more and more that are good.

The first sip opens up with a bunch of different hops. I can taste oranges, pine, berry, and melon. This is one that doesn't look to be grapefruit-y or tropical, using its hops to buck the recent IPA trends.

Mouthfeel is as great as any good DIPA. The bitterness isn't overdone and everything is well balanced.

Gang of Blades pours to a giant pebbly off-white head on a slightly hazy, deep-gold body that shows copious amounts of fine carbonation; head retention is modest and lacing is fair, consisting of bands and caverns. The nose is big, leading with tasty, grassy pineapple, backed by spicy florals and cannabis, more subtle tamarind and a hint of grapefruit and body odor; subtle alcohol overtones ride aloft. Up front, the palate is bitter, tartish grassy pineapple; mid-palate the malt manifests as a slight bittersweet nutty character and a largely-obscured, slightly caramelish bready malt foundation, rolling the bitterness back to a light level for the style. The backing notes from the nose emerge, so that hop-wise the palate is pretty much following the nose. The finish is a modest hit of grassy, nutty tamarind, followed by the onset of a mild, slightly grassy earthy/pine bitterness that lingers for awhile. Mouthfeel is commensurate with the light body and is slightly astringent; the texture is medium-creamy and quite peppery from the overenthusiastic carbonation. (16 oz can, 22 days after pkg)
