Notes: Collaboration with Fair State Brewing Cooperative

Sometimes the deepest thought emanates from being around those things that just simply are. They need no introduction, no fancy nomenclatures. They are an invitation to go beyond that which persists within view. A righteous gift of introspection. A dark lager inspired by Northern brewing traditions, using German barley and hopped mildly with Bohemian hops. A collaboration from way afar with our friends at Fair State Brewing Cooperative.

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear extremely dark cola brown approaching jet black in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and faint ruby red + garnet red colored highlights. The beer has a three finger tall sudsy foamy tan head that slowly reduces to a medium sized patch of thin film covering approximately 40% of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of slightly roasted + bready malts with a minimal amount of grainy sweetness. Slightly heavier than light aromas of grassy + herbal hops. Light aromas of lager yeast.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of slightly roasted + bready malts with a minimal amount of grainy sweetness. That is followed by light flavors of lager yeast. Finally there is a light flavor of grassy + herbal hops. There is a light amount of roasty bitterness which lingers slightly before fading away leaving a relatively clean finish.

M: Slightly heavier than light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly crisp with a hint of dryness and a relatively clean finish.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a light crisp clean mouthfeel. Enjoyable with nice roasty flavors - I guess this is the Czech take on a German Schwarzbier.

Had on tap. Pitch black pour with a large tan head, spotted lacing. Smell and taste are both led by roasted malt with lightly charred earth. Taste the malts bring some smooth chocolate, nose not as much but has more of an earthy hop note. Feel is smooth and malty the whole sip, full yet not heavy

Appearance - The poor was black and color with an off-white had topping the glass.

Smell - Dry and bitter chocolate notes accompany less sweet dark malts.

Taste - Chocolate notes and Char are at the front. The lager yeast smooth is the profile. Hop bitterness was also noted. The bitterness lingered to the finish.

Mouthfeel - Little carbonation allowed for the smooth finish. It was almost creamy.

Overall - This is a great example of the style. Though it might be a touch to bitter.

16 oz. can. Deep brown. Smells of nutty, toasty, and lightly sweet malts with a bit of spicy hop. Tastes of dark toasted bread, a little chocolate, and light caramel sweetness. Hints of coffee. Cut by a bit of spicy and earthy hop bitterness. Medium light and extremely drinkable. I really enjoy it. I wouldn't be able to tell you it's definitively Czech in profile, but whatever, I like it.

Look: It pours dark brown with a tan head. Head retention is medium.

Smell: It has aromas of bread crusts and cola with a low level of nuts. There are also low levels of coffee.

Taste: The flavors are led by the malts featuring coffee, roast, and very low plums. The roast has a bit of a bite to it. There are very low levels of spicy hops as well.

Feel: It has a medium light body with medium bitterness in the finish.

Overall, the sharpness of the roast throws it off a bit for me but it is relatively easy drinking.
