Appearance: Served with a doughnut hole on a skewer, the beer arrives with a fudge brown color and a very modest head; little lacing

Smell: Chocolate, coffee and molasses

Taste: Chocolate, up front, with developing coffee and molasses tones, in the middle; a hint of citrus peeks into the mix, after the swallow, but the finish is rather sugary; a lot of coffee in the aftertaste, however

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation; a bit thin for the style and lacks the creamy character I was expecting

Overall: Mouthfeel issues, aside, this is a fun beer and the doughnut hole certainly adds a subliminal hint that there is a sugary doughnut element hiding in the flavor profile

Note - having tried this in the can I was much more impressed, bumping up the appearance, mouthfeel and overall scores

Its roots might be of England, but what Burial brewers have done with the oatmeal stout has taken a decidedly American turn. With no hesitation to push toward imperial strength and copious coffee additions, Skillet Donut Stout is a brash but gentlemanly take on the style.

Skillet pours as black as black can be expected to be- onyx-like in its pour, the frothy mocha-stained head crowns the rim while strong coffee aromatics swirl assertively above. With charred caramel, burnt milk and cocoa leading the way, its malty flavors are partly sweet with sugary roast, malted milk and caramel.

As the sweetness slowly relaxes, the more robust qualities of the beer are free to roam about the tongue, bringing their char, dark-roast coffee, bitter baker's chocolate, peppercorn, chicory and faint aniseed ahead of the sweetness. With the same earthen linger, those rootish and bean flavors are accompanied with a bark-like bitterness with mellow campfire and again, the odd allure of burnt cream.

Malty-rich and full-bodied, the stout gains imperial strength in its power and status, however, its has a semblance of drinkability that suggest lighter. As a stout that wants to drink quickly but with the boldness to suggest a more sipping affair, the session is such a tease. Regardless, its linger of wonderfully burnt sweetness, smoky chocolate and seared milk is oddly appealing.

Poured from a 16oz can into some sort of fancy stemware.....I don't know the names of these glasses anymore.

Appearance: pours black in color, with some lighter brown highlights along the edges. Plenty of khaki colored head here, leaving spotty lacing as the beers drunk. Nice retention as well.

Aroma: pops as soon as the can is cracked, which is always a good omen. Sweetness and roastiness pour out of the can. Coffee is super present, along with the lactose, some vanilla, and some mild spices.

Taste: at first, quite roasty and full of the coffee bean character. Following that, lots of sweet, rich vanilla, some mild smoke, plenty of creamy sweet notes from the lactose. Doesn't taste like a donut, but does taste delish.

Feel: perhaps a touch thin, the beer still drinks supa smooth and creamy.

Overall: this is a really nicely executed "breakfast stout." Carries lots of rich flavor without being super boozy, and I'm in love with the scrumptious stout in a pounder can format.

O: If you get it from Burial on draft, they'll serve it up with a donut hole. What you want to do is to take that donut hole, take a small bite so the inside is exposed, then dunk that deep into your glass until it soak up every possible bit of the beer that it can, then you scoop it back up and take it all in... glorious!

Pours dark chocolate brown going to black, completely opaque. 2+ finger tan head is rather dense. Good retention and medium lacing left behind.

Coffee, caramel, roasted malt, and lactose. Oats and molasses. Dark chocolate. Cream and espresso.

Taste much like the aroma. Coffee is particularly strong followed by the roasted malt. Creamy lactose next. Dark chocolate, some bitterness.

Medium body with moderate carbonation. Good amount of roasty bitterness. Lingering coffee. Despite the bitterness, fairly creamy on the tongue.

Really good breakfast style stout. Not quite to the level of FBS, but I definitely want more of this.

16 oz can.
Aside from the complete dominance by coffee, this mildly bitter beer is very well balanced.
Mildly bitter; a bit more so in the aftertaste.

Overall: a flavorful but coffee dominated beer that can only recommended for coffee lovers.
