16 ounce can, bottom of can stamped "packaged 07/09/18". Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both decent. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like cinnamon, vanilla, nuts, bittersweet chocolate, roasted malt, coffee and cream. I think the taste is similar to the aroma with roasted malt, cinnamon, vanilla, nutty, dark and milk chocolate, coffee, cream, and woody/earthy flavors. I was expecting this to be sweeter overall (even though it was a mostly sweeter tasting stout), but I liked the balance between all the flavors here. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's coating and easy enough to drink with a moderate amount of carbonation. I thought this was a good brew, glad I got the chance to try this one! $3.50 a can.

Canned on 7/9/18. 16oz can poured into a tulip. Pours almost black with a very small khaki head that quickly fades leaving solid retention and lacing. The aromas are malt forward along with some hints of dark chocolate. Some almond aromas as well. The vanilla and cinnamon is subtle in the aroma department. The flavors are a bit bolder than the nose. Roasted characteristics are there. More dark chocolate. Some vanilla. Some almonds along with some subtle hazelnut notes. The cinnamon is mild. Nice malt backbone. Alcohol basically goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side of full-bodied with moderate to active carbonation. It's fluffy, sharp, smooth and easy to drink.

This is a nice stout. It's balanced, but pretty flavorful. It's enjoyable and fun to drink. I like it.

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear thick viscous jet black in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising quickly along the edges of the glass and faint dark cola brown colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall dense foamy dark tan head that slowly reduces to a large patch of thin film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of roasted + dark malts with light to moderate amount of lactose sweetness and moderate aromas of dark chocolate, almond, vanilla, and cinnamon.

T: Upfront there are slightly stronger than moderate flavors of roasted + dark malts with light to moderate amount of lactose sweetness. That is followed by moderate flavors of dark chocolate and just shy of moderate flavors of almond. Light flavors of vanilla and cinnamon. Hints of earthy hops. There is a moderate amount of roasty bitterness which fades after a moderate amount of time leaving light lingering dark chocolate + almond + cinnamon flavors.

M: Just shy of full bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth with a light hint of alcohol warming in the finish.

O: Enjoyable with relatively well hidden alcohol (except for a hint of warming in the finish). Very enjoyable with a really nice combination of flavors of dark chocolate + lactose + cinnamon + almond + vanilla definitely reminding me of horchata. Flavorful and fun without being overly sweet, cinnamon heavy , or bitter.

The Mexican culture has always found comfort from the heat in a spicy cream concoction that resonates on the palate like a melted vanilla milkshake. The brewers at Hi-Wire take their famoun 10W-40 imperial stout in that horchata direction by adding subtle amounts of almond, vanilla, cinnamon and chocolate for a taste that adds a little spice to the stout.

The Horchata version of 10W-40 pours luciously black, looking like espresso with a dense blanket of mocha froth. Rich and roasty aromas of dark roast coffee, cocoa and cream roll onto the nose with gentle suggestions of soft nuttiness, cinnamon and vanilla. Robust sweetness carries onto the initial palate with a strong toffee, caramel and light molasses character to accompany the roast.

As the roasted sweetness gravitates toward the middle palate, the taste of heavy sweet cream comes with the sensation of roasted marshmallows. Bittersweet chocolate, vanilla and almond begin to temper the char even while a presence of black walnut persists. Moderate bitterness is woodsy against the late palate as the taste of cinnamon and amaretto add a nudge of spice to assist in balance.

Full bodied but yet somewhat drinkable, the beer's velvety mouthfeel adds a lightness and finesse that glides over the tongue and offers stout lovers the same resolve that authentic horchata drinks give to the sweltering days of Mexico. A long and roasty sweet trail of malt extend deep in aftertaste, making this stout something of a dessert.

Subtle easy drinking flavors unlike some of the other horchata beers I've tried.. Almost a hint of tobacco flavor ..

Probably would drink again but its worth a try for sure .

16 ounce can dated 7/6/18. Poured into tulip.
Pours a dark brown, almost like a darker root beer with 1/2” of soapy, tan head.
The nose is vanilla and almonds. More sniffs reveal some roast and cinnamon.
This beer is full of flavors. Roast, amaretto, vanilla, coffee with vanilla creamer, sweet chocolate and mild cinnamon finish. There is a ton of vanilla in here but it doesn’t overpower anything, rather it blends well with its components.
Smooth body, thinner for the labeled “imperial” stout but easy drinking. Just like the regular 10w-40and BA 10w-40 this is a well made and flavorful beer.
