Hi-Pitch India Pale AleHi-Pitch India Pale Ale
Notes: A western North Carolina IPA that does not apologize for balancing a sturdy malt backbone with citrus-forward aromas and a lingering bitterness. Expect big grapefruit flavors from the plethora of hops to balance out the malt in this well-balanced ale.

Hi-Pitch is a deep, deep gold IPA with a quite hazy, effervescent body and a brief-lived off-white head that leaves a solid sheet of very tattered lacing. The nose is medium in intensity: a nice blend of sweet grapefruit, spicy/sweet candy-like florals and hints of cannabis, with slight alcohol overtones riding aloft. Up front, the palate is a modestly bitter blend of melon and pineapple, and is slightly grassy. Mid-palate, the grapefruit from the nose displaces the pineapple, but the melon remains ascendant, and an unusual light mint/basil herbal topnote emerges; the grassiness increases a bit, and the malt shows as hints of caramel and a modestly apparent bready malt foundation. The finish is pretty clean, showing just a bit of grassy melon, followed by the onset of a mild melony/piney/grassy bitterness that lasts for awhile. Mouthfeel is on-point for the light-medium body, and is fairly astringent; the texture is slightly creamy, slightly slick and medium-peppery from the well-expressed carbonation. (12 oz bottle, no code date)

Priding themselves in not only a slew of hop aromas and flavor, but also a somber and responsible balance that brings this American IPA back in line to the well-sculpted flavors that frame their British roots. Hi-Wire's Hi-Pitch carries a firm malt support without interfering with the abundance of hops.

The North Carolina IPA pours a hazy burnt orange color with a depth of amber through the center. The nose is rife with hops- citrus, herbal, grassy and tea-like with hints of jam and honey. The initial taste picks up on those sweeter impressions and carries through with caramel, granola and biscuit roundness.

While the malty backbone holds firm, the sweetness drifts slightly and makes way for the hop balance to gradually take command. Pink grapefruit, freshly zested orange, hints of lemon and apricot with a smooth mango and passionfruit flavor following up. Trending bitter yet smooth, the finish is sprucy with juniper berry, citrus peel, woodsy and perfumy sassafras and broadly bitter with tea and stone fruit.

Medium-bodied for IPA, the beer's starchy and biscuity texture offers a pillowy softness that buffers the sharpness of hops and keeps their gripping bitternesses in check. An aftertaste of citrus and herb outlasts the malt and reminds the palate that this IPA has deep West Coast roots as well.

Sour, bock-like with lots of hops. Not a fan. My six pack also said brewed and bottled in Asheville, yet the individual bottles say Kiln, MS by Lazy Magnolia.

This is a really hoppy, juicy, citrus -flavored brew. It also has a strong malt influence. Nice job on this. I would make it a reasonably-priced craft beer go-to but we are visiting here in SC. It is not found up in Northern IN where we reside.
