In a hot and humid sea of sweet, yellow, corn flavored beer, this little bottle shop stands out as a beautiful island. With another half frozen bottle of Antarctica Original looming over the evening’s horizon, I stumbled upon this place completely by chance. The shop is modestly sized, and is lined with a series of beautiful backlit shelves and refrigerators. There is a small kiosk in the middle of the store and a counter against the side wall. Everything is covered in bottles. The bottles on the shelves were a little warm (either from exposure from the sun blasting through the big front window, or the lighting effects on the shelves), but the beers in the three coolers were nice and chilly. There is a small bar in the back and a television for soccer… er, futebol. A few small tables and chairs provide space for customers to enjoy their purchases. The guy running the shop did not speak English, but we were able to use a series of friendly hand gestures to find me a good Brazilian beer. He also knew how to properly pour a weizen, so we’re pretty much best friends right now.

The selection was impressive, and many of the bottles were tagged as Mr. Beer “exclusives”. There were a ton of Belgians like Chimay, Kwak, La Chouffe, Delirium Tremens, Gordon, Duvel, Maredsous, Omer, Lucifer, and Vedett. The United Kingdom was also well represented with Bath Ales (exclusive), BrewDog, Fullers (ESB, Honeydew, India Pale), Joseph Holt, Adnams, and Traquair. I saw a couple German and Czech beers as well like Bohemia Regent (exclusive), Brauerei Pinkus Mueller (exclusive), and Schneider Weisse. Other European imports included Biera Corsa, Mikkeller, and Christoffel Nobel. Both US beers, Anchor and Epic, were marked as exclusive. But the highlight of my visit was the amazing selection of Brazilian craft beers. They had bottles of Saint Bier, Way Beer, Bamberg, Dama Bier, Cervejaria Colorado, and Cerveja Coruja. Colorado has even brewed a version of their Demoiselle that is exclusively sold at Mr. Beer. I had heard and read about a lot of these new Brazilian breweries, but this was the first time I had actually seen many of thier beers for sale.

I understand that this shop is one in a chain of specialty beer shops in Brazil, and I am happy to report that I am very impressed with what they are doing. I wish that they would keep their non-refrigerated bottles a little cooler, but overall I they are doing a fantastic job trying to keep a beautiful country properly lubricated. My only regret is that I didn’t bring a bigger suitcase.
