Riptide Rye Pale Ale
Forked River Brewing Company
A beer in the style of a pale ale with a twist of rye, Riptide is made for the beer drinker that likes big flavour. The bold hop flavours blend well with the addition of rye, which lends a creamy mouthfeel and a slightly spicy finish to this hop-forward, yet well-balanced beer. Like the Capital Blonde Ale, this brew benefits from the careful addition of “late hops” at the end of the boil.

Look: Mostly clear with a hint of opacity. Copper with a brown undertone colour. Pours with a 2 finger white head that disapates into a skim of head at 5 minutes.
Smell: Sandlewood, citrus and grains.
Taste: Dry and earthy from the front end to the middle. Very grainy. The backend has a soapy metalic taste.
Feel: Very creamy mouthfeel with a solid medium body. Doesn't stimulate much on the tongue, mostly plays on the palate.
It's an interesting taste profile. This beer has been rebranded as a Riptide Pale Ale, but the rye backbone remains. It earns a solid B

LCBO London 2019. Clear amber with a decent head with lacing. Nose is both floral and spicy. Light-medium rye body with some dryness to finish.

Deep copper, filtered with a little carbonation, and topped with a finger of white head.
Smells slightly spicy of rye character, orange zest and toasted malt.
The taste totally follows the nose, slightly spicy of rye, hints of orange, and toasted malt.
Medium body, with medium low carbonation.
Drinking in Muskoka Dec 4th, 2017. Surprisingly good brew, using rye and still being subtle, versatile and could pair with a number of foods.

Big soapy head that settles to a splotchy film. Amber coloured brew. Sweet, slightly heavy up front. Pretty substantial bite from carbonation. Nose is a touch of sweet, a whiff of alcohol, some malt and grain. Taste is sweet, drying hops to finish. Noticeable rye typical of these brews. Just a little too harsh edged on a couple fronts to me.

Pours a clear deep amber colour with a medium sized puffy off-white head which dissipates quickly & leaves some moderate lacing but really only near the top of the glass. Almost no carbonation visible shortly after pouring. Aroma is mild, with some citrus, but sadly also a hint of cat spray. Taste is unique with a some light hop fruitiness & bready malt up front, along with some sour rye & a canteloupe flavour combined with some graininess towards the end, but also a touch of sour acetic flavour. Mouthfeel isn't great as it's both a little watery as well as pretty flat. Unique taste combination but it comes up a little short overall.

Got this one at the LCBO this past summer
From a 500ml bottle into a snifter
APPEARANCE: Pours a two finger, medium looking, creamy, fluffy white head with excellent retention. Hazy gamboge orange with higher levels of carbonation. Head slowly recedes to a full creamy cap. A half wisp remains leaving touches of lacing down the glass.
SMELL: Grainy malts, caramel, some spicy notes and grassy aromas as well. Milder aromas.
TASTE: Slightly spicy and grainy flavors up front. Some caramel too, with a rather empty swallow. Milder aftertaste with caramel, grainy malts, some spicy notes and grassy bitterness lingering on the palate.
PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Slightly creamy on the palate, goes down fine and finishes a tough drier. Some mild bitterness lingers.
OVERALL: This was mediocre. Mostly grainy flavor here, which kind of took over for the spicy character you’d expect from a rye ale. Not much of a hop presence either, which has slowly become important in the style. The flavor that was there was kind of mute as well. Anyways, nothing bad, but not my cup of tea, and not something I’ll be looking to get again.

Bottle: Poured a bright amber color ale with a large white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of cereal and peppery notes is enjoyable. Taste is a nice mix between some peppery yeast notes, some cereal and light citrusy hoppy notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Enjoyable and easy to drink though hoppy side could me more pronounced.
