A beer in the style of a pale ale with a twist of rye, Riptide is made for the beer drinker that likes big flavour. The bold hop flavours blend well with the addition of rye, which lends a creamy mouthfeel and a slightly spicy finish to this hop-forward, yet well-balanced beer. Like the Capital Blonde Ale, this brew benefits from the careful addition of “late hops” at the end of the boil.

Nice hoppy rye experience. Interesting caramel colour, little head

Typical (but not unpleasant) orange-peel-bitterness aftertaste.

Definitely a thirst-quencher. For me, more of a spring- summer beer than a winter-fall, which is odd given the rye.

Purchased at the LCBO for around $4.00 or so. Served at 4deg C in a draught glass

A- 3.25- Didn't open well at all. No head. Think I got a dud. Poured nice and dark gold

S- 3.25. Not much here. Sorry but the malt is just usual.

T- 3.5- Has a touch of goodness here but not much. A bit of honey but you gotta look hard.

M- 3.0- Yup not here at all

O- 3.35 and I am giving this a lot. Will not buy again but it won't kill you.

Food Pairing

This ok IPA goes well with almost anything as it really doesn't have a lot to it. It's pretty weak

Bottle: Poured a bright amber color ale with a large white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of cereal and peppery notes is enjoyable. Taste is a nice mix between some peppery yeast notes, some cereal and light citrusy hoppy notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Enjoyable and easy to drink though hoppy side could me more pronounced.

Deep copper, filtered with a little carbonation, and topped with a finger of white head.

Smells slightly spicy of rye character, orange zest and toasted malt.

The taste totally follows the nose, slightly spicy of rye, hints of orange, and toasted malt.

Medium body, with medium low carbonation.

Drinking in Muskoka Dec 4th, 2017. Surprisingly good brew, using rye and still being subtle, versatile and could pair with a number of foods.

First time trying the microbrew beer from my hometown. All I can say is very good.

Pours a gold and orange colour. Very clear (despite being unfiltered). Little to no head on it though.

Smell is a little strong but not potent.

Taste was very good. Strong, but not overwhelming. Stronger then the Capital Blonde.

The only complaint I have is the carbonation. When it poured, there was no head on it. Carbonation dissapeared quickly. Although this was not the case when I sampled the beer from the tap. We will see on the second bottle.

Overall I was very happy with this beer. Price was a little expensive, but its local, small batch, and fine ingredients. I will be purchasing again in the near future.

Keep it up guys!

With half the bottle in the glass, its amber body is crystal clear. A finger's worth of soapy paper white head forms on top and is quickly reduced to a film of large bubbles. Thin legs of lace are drawn along the top sides of the glass.

Leafy, piney, green hops mix with a rich and sweet bready caramel center. A distinct rye spiciness is discernible throughout, furthering its richness. I get a whiff of DMS in the end as well. Maybe that's just me. I'd say it's under-pronounced but has enough going on to make me look forward to drinking it.

Spicy rye laden with caramel fills the palate. Its rich bready character gives it some chewiness. It's got grassy tips with a faint pineyness. The finish is dry with a touch of bitterness.

Its feel is soft, rich, and creamy. All of these qualities are accentuated by its oddly low level of carbonation. That explains its poor head formation and retention.

Understated is the word I'd use to sum up this beer. Based on its clarity and use of rye malt, I'm not sure how this didn't go through a filtration process. Nonetheless, it's very drinkable and holds just enough flavor to make it tasty. Their Weendingo Imperial Stout is in a completely different league.

Appearance: It has a nice clear golden/orange color to it. It has a nice off-white head that dies down somewhat fast and leaves little lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of spicy rye, toffee, caramel, bready/biscuity malts and floral hops.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some rye, sweet toffee/caramel, buiscuity malts, some breadiness, faint floral notes and a grassy bitterness.

Mouthfeel: It has a low carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with decent flavors and aromas.

500 mL bottle picked up at an LCBO in London; no freshness info apparent. Never heard of these guys, but I'm always pumped to try beer from new breweries, especially semi-local ones. Served well-chilled.

An intentionally rough pour reveals a pale golden-amber coloured ale, topped with a half-finger of bubbly, off-white froth. It vanishes quite rapidly over the next 30 seconds or so, leaving behind a soapy film and some modest lace. No bubbles whatsoever; this is a lifeless-looking beer. The aroma is relatively muted, though otherwise pleasant - some doughy malt sweetness, a weak note of rye (more noticeable straight from the bottle), and some leafy, green floral hop notes with a touch of citrus.

Up until this point I was on the fence, but the first sip is a welcome relief - this is a tasty pale ale, no doubt. The malt backbone is sweet and doughy, with hints of toffee, toasted biscuit and rye bread. The spiciness of the latter facet grows toward the finish, providing a slight peppery note that works nicely with the grassy, somewhat earthy hops. Bittersweet finish with a nice rye flavour to it. This beer tastes fine, but the mouthfeel is where things fall a little, uh, flat. There is very little carbonation in this beer, and I am not sure it is intentional. Medium-bodied, with a smooth, rather flat feel on the palate. Easy to drink, and pretty flavourful.

Final Grade: 3.55, a B. Riptide Rye Pale Ale makes for a nice introduction to this brewery, even though the limp head and mouthfeel leads me to believe that this batch might be flawed. I am enjoying the flavour profile, which is enough to earn this one a respectable grade, although the lack of carbonation is not something I appreciate in this style. This is a beer I'll need to return to at some point in the future, because it definitely has promise. Pale ale fans looking for something a little different will want to give this one a shot.
