Notes: English-Style Barleywine Aged in Cabernet Barrels

Iron & Barleywine is an English-style barleywine brewed with a balancing array of hops. Notes of citrus, plum, pear, grape, wine, fig, honey, and rock candy blend into a complex, slow sipping brew. The barrel aging adds a distinct vineous quality, prominently featuring the flavors of red wine and toasted oak. This special release bottle was aged for three months in California oak cabernet barrels. Ready to drink now, or cellar for future enjoyment.

I cellared this one for a year and it was amazing! It's as if I took a cab from Napa valley and a box of caramel chocolates for me to drink and pair! This one needs to be matured!

Many thanks to jhartley for this bottle!

A - Pours a ruby amber red color with nice clarity, steady tight carbonation, and a very thick, frothy and incredibly sticky lacing ring.

S - Very odd nose with grape skins, pears, oak, and some tiny traces of toffee (but really have to dive to get it. Sure doesn't smell like a barleywine!!

T - Plum, pears, grape, oak, red wine, Belgian candy sugar, and finishes with a little dash of alcohol, citrus bitterness, sweet red grape skins, and a little bit of toffee. The bitterness on the finish becomes more prevalent well after the beer disappeared down the hatch.

M - Full bodied, thick, very slippery

O - This beer is a total oddity. Barleywine? Not that I can tell which is why the scores are probably all over the board. The complexity is amazing but such an odd beer.

The beer smells towards an American barleywine, or towards something I wouldn't like.

On the other hand, the flavor is quite balanced. While the hops are a bit more aggressive than an English barleywine, they are balanced by light caramel sweetness and barrel character.

Quite interesting, but very lacking in mouthfeel as the beer drinks a bit watery.

On draft, pours a dark ruby red, good carbonation.

The nose is pine and resin hops, crystal malt, caramel, a little brown sugar, oak and smells a little acidic from the red wine. The flavor is bright, citrus, dark fruit, grape, and a little honey. The barrel is present, a little oak and toast, but nothing crazy. The mouthfeel is sticky, but this has a good balance between the flavors.

Feel: medium body; light carbonation; a bit hot.
Aroma: fruity and (too) floral. Lightly boozy.
Flavor: sweet and boozy ... very boozy.
O: decent, but poorly hidden alcohol. Would probably benefit from aging.

Poured from the bottle into a large snifter glass. Vintage 2015.

Deep apricot to peach orange body color. Bit of a glow to this but with some slight opaque and muddy characteristics. Faint tain fleeting head, and big bubbled soapy collar while settling.

Real out there aroma. Thick sweet notes of plum and grape jelly. Slight green herbs a bit, almost towards mint but a little bit less sweeter sensing. Very fruity smelling but also seems to hint more to American style than English. Very nice.

Palate takes some bit of surprises. Young sensing and a bit wet considerably, as the flavors wash away very quickly on sips. Juiced body slightly highly emphasizing fruited plum to grape jelly. Moderate sweetness and a finish that comes out a bit like flat cola to skim milk.

Grape must is always interesting, and this sort of has some appeal and flavors not unlike Noble Rot from Dogfish head, with it's earthy and musty grape sense, but comes off a little bit too wet and fleeting.

A - Pours a purple-ish amber, with a finger or so of head that recedes to a thin cap.

S - Smells like grape soda mixed with DME. Nothing good about this at all so far.

T - Overtones of Welch’s grape soda, with some wheat-y notes in the background. Nothing about this beer resembles a barleywine. Too sickly sweet, no maltiness.

M - Medium bodied, somewhat drying, and a long, grapey finish.

O - I am disappoint. This is awful. It smells and tastes like a beer gone bad but they released this into the wild. It’s not sour like an infected beer but the end result is the same. Difficult to finish a snifter, let alone the entire bottle. Poured about half the bottle into the drain. Definitely the worst beer I’ve had from FB to date. Odd (but typical) that this gets above average scores but everyone complains about how bad it is.

650 mL bottle. Clear amber body. Small off-white head. Strong red wine aroma. Dark fruits. Brown sugar. Some oxidation. Tastes sweet and oaky. Red wine isn’t as strong, but adds a nice dimension. Lots of oxidation. I have definitely sat on this too long. Medium body. Boozy, though. Bitter in the back end. Better than expected, but pretty meh.

Of note: this bottled vintage (last 2015/early 2016) does not appear to be aged in barrels.

A: Slightly hazy, burgundy with ruby hues, 1 finger of tan head, decent retention and a good amount of lacing. 4.25

S: Sweet grapes, booze, sugary notes. Smells like sugar cheap wine mixed with grape flavored Four Loco. 3

T: Tastes better than it smells, but still not great. Lots of grape flavors, some candied sugar, subtle bitterness. 3.25

M/D: Medium body, carbonation medium, ABV well masked, drinkability is fair. 3.5

O: This is easily the worst beer I’ve ever had from FB. It also has no semblance of an English Barleywine at all (which it claims to be on the label). Bonus point for uniqueness I guess though. 3

so there is a little bit of a discrepancy here, as this is listed as a barleywine in cab barrels, but our bottle says brewed with grape must and nothing about a barrel, yet there is only one listing here on BA. in any event, the beer is downright special, one of my favorites from these guys to date, and thats really saying something. its just a killer beer, majorly unique. pinkish orangish reddish in color, quite light for the style thats for sure, with an airy white head that settles fast. the color is striking, never seen in in a barleywine. the nose shows a ton of the grape must, its almost like a red wine hybrid of sorts, really vinous and bold, i love the fruit in it, but i am equally surprised and impressed by the subtle nature of the barley itself. its fresh but very mild, nowhere near as sweet as many of these english styles usually get, and nowhere near at thick. almost thin on the body with a ton of carbonation, calling this a barleywine is a stretch for me, but a really good beer. the grape and the grain interact well, and this would rank near the top of the non sour beer wine hybrids for me, nothing else like it out there at all. more tang from the skins of the grapes than there is toffee and brown sugar sweetness from the malt like i expected, and almost no perceptible yeast character, which i suppose i do miss a little in the style. overall though a game changing brew, not like anything else. i dont think it needs a cabernet barrel, but i would be really curious to try that version of it too. the closest thing to this i have ever had is the bb dexi italian grape barleywine in the blue glass bottle, but even that is a far cry away in terms of similar taste. this thing is on a delicious island and i want to go there again!
