Notes: We brewed this imperial stout to be big, bold and strong, like a bear-hugging Russian wrestler. A thick body using oats and lactose is complimented by plenty of complex chocolate, cocoa, and caramel undertones, before finishing on a balanced roasty note.

Poured from the bottle into a large snifter glass.

Deep walnut brown body, with a milky like pour out of the bottle. Fleeting tan head, manages a wet and big bubbled collar. Spotted leopard like lacing on the edges while consuming and barely a puck to speak of. Quite a bit of clarity also, with a faint touch of lighter chestnut brown to see through.

Mixing notes of dark grains, a touch of char mixing in with drip and wet like coffee aromas to go with. Seems a little flat of the nose and quite watery smelling. Still some decent aromas come to the mix at least. Hints at a bit of sharp brown nutmeg as well, and an interesting pungency that's hard to describe.

Milky roast. It's the first thing that pops in my head. Lingering sense of a malt rich tones, but turns considerably after the swallow. Light chocolate but with a bit of darker roast malt, leaving behind cocoa rich qualities in favor of more grain like flavors. Aftertaste is quite surprising, with a lingering chocolate note that seems to slowly build while finishing. Palate feel is more akin to a basic brown ale strangely, even on the malt bill, but then goes into a watery creamy and vanilla flavor.

A decent brew but doesn't remind me of anything like a classic Russian Imperial. Drinkable at least.

Pours an entirely black color, with a small, bubbly, very stable head.

Smells of leaf coated melted toffee and rock sugar with licorice. Milk chocolate and a hint of caramel add to a dried earth foundation.

Has a supersoft, very smooth, pleasantly thick mouthfeel, while ending with an intriguing dryness during the finish.

Tastes way more intense than it smells, leading off with toasted, earthen malts, while its thick mouthfeel produces tons of whipped cream. This gets amped up by melted caramel and rich layers of toffee. Those sweeter flavors blend directly into earthen, dry coffee and warming, bitter chocolate. Finishes with even more cream and a chocolate covered earth dryness, which still produces a sticky, nice caramel peak.

Great in taste, a little boring on the nose with a fantastic, thick and creamy mouthfeel, complimenting its chocolate qualities perfectly.

Funky Buddha Brewery - Nikolai Vorlauf. 10.5% ABV. 22oz bomber split between two snifters. Bottled on 11/18/15.

Look: Pitch black body, allowing no light to penetrate. Retains a white ring and spotty lacing.

Smell: Roast coffee, however not overpowering, along with dark chocolate, sweet cream, caramel, and some vanilla.

Feel: Rich and silky smooth, with very little carbonation.

Taste: Roasty dark coffee and dark chocolate up front, along with some sweet cream, vanilla, and caramel to balance out the light roastiness.

Overall: This feels more like a Milk Stout, or American Stout because of how sweet it is. Very rich flavors that balance each other out.

Thanks to markwise for yet another bottle, 22 oz. of odd Russian stuff on the label. Split with my wife.

The pour is dark black all the way to the edge; no ginger crown molding here. Subdued cocoa & roast in the nose, pretty sure those are standard options on any big stout.

Nikolai Vorlauf feels like driving a Ford Focus: point it in the right direction & you’ll get there. Dry roast, check, sweet malts, check, milky lactose, check, light chocolate, check. Big, chewy, mildly watery, no alcohol presence. It’s one strength is it’s wickedly easy to drink, like a milk stout half it’s ABV.

Unlike beers that combine ingredients to make something astounding, this one’s exactly the sum of its parts. Decent enough.

2015 bottle, 9.5% abv. Pours a clear very dark brown, near black in the glass with brown edges; thin khaki colored cap of dense foam, trails streaks of delicate lace down the glass. Smell: a little roast and chocolatey and smoky coffee, anise note, a little plum. Understated. Taste: big lactose-y sweetness... prune juice and milk caramel; moderately roasty with a little char, anise note with dark chocolate syrup; some pine in the back. Body is a bit lighter that expected and the party is over too early. Still, it's enjoyable as a double sweet stout, though maybe a bit plain and underpowered.

Had 1x on tap at brewery and it was great! Bought a bottle and brought home. Bottled 11/18/15; consumed 6/25/16. Pours a bit thinner than I like to look for in an imperial stout. Otherwise, quickly dissipated head, bubbly ring with decent lacing. Smell coffee chocolate. Taste chocolate coconut coffee bitters dark fruit covered in more chocolate. Feel is smooth with the oats and at the same time a 10 second delay of bitterness hanging out. Sticky lips. Overall, was better on tap but still a solid offering.
