An interesting effort, if not quite inspiring. The barrel aging slicked down the body and mouthfeel, so it drinks thin and slick, like a light lacquer had been applied. There are the range of flavors you might imagine in a BA tripel - oak, light vanilla, booze - but it's the apple flavor from the brandy barrels that cuts through just a little bit more than the others. It actually reminds me of HOTD Fred just a little bit, in that they both have that boozy apple juice feel, if that makes sense. Not a world beater, but solid overall.

Thanks to rudzud for sharing.

No real head, some legs, murky dirty orange golden color.

Nose starts with lots of esters, fruity esters with green apple, apple cider, with mild phenols, faint booze but hidden fairly well, big vanilla oak with touch of bourbon, and nice brandy aroma adding to the apple faint cinnamon like apple pie spices, and perhaps crumble but that's probably my brain.

Taste brings more brandy right out front, lots more apple, apple pie and crumble again, with lots more esters, fruity apple esters, and light cider. Big phenols as well, not very boozy but big chemical phenols, with bitter tannic skin. Faint bourbon and just a touch of vanilla oak. Overall quite light on flavor, muted. Finish is more bitterness and phenols, light apple pie and skin, little slimy feel.

Mouth is med bod, lighter carb, very little booze, little slick feel.

Overall mixed, great nose, muted taste but booze is hidden well. Enjoyable but just fell short of the nose for everything else.

On tap at the brewery. Served in a snifter.

Appearance - Light haze to an orange body. Medium off white head.

Smell - Buckets of barrel here. Bourbon. Oak. Vanilla. Some fruitiness that I guess is the apple brandy.

Taste - Apple brandy comes out much more as it warms. Bourbon is hefty too. Very woody. Kinda astringent and woody. Sweet pale maltiness is a bit fruity.

Mouthfeel - Medium heavy. Pretty sweet. Astringent and boozy.

Overall - The barrels are nice, but I'd rather see a different beer in these barrels.

Shared with JLindros.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a clear dirty brass hue with not much of a head at all, mostly just thin wisps.

S - Aromas of Belgian esters galore with loads of apples, probably in thanks to the apple brandy. The rye is very faint, the bourbon is pleasant with loads of vanilla and barrel. The esters, apple, and vanilla are really well put together, love the brandy notes.

T - Taste is rather slick. Esters are there, but the apple is mostly gone. Really flat tasting even the vanilla is muted. Light green apple skins, light barrel, soft malts and sugars. alcohol is rather noticeable too. Really wasn't expecting this type of taste. Very very muted.

M - Mouthfeel is rather slick, slightly thin, alcohol is prevalent.

O - Overall I had rather high expectations for this beer. The nose is incredible but everything else was rather lackluster. Grr
