Buenos dias, amigos: We teamed up with Jose Cuervo to brew a seriously delicious cafe concoction. Mexican Coffee is an imperial stout blended with coffee, cinnamon, and sent out for an extended vacation inside reposado tequila barrels. The result is rich and roasty with a kiss of tequila; just like a classic cafe mexicano.

Appearance - The beer was black in color with a frothy tan head crowning the pour.

Smell - The agave from the tequila led the way in the nose. The coffee notes were light, but faintly present.

Taste - there was a huge tequila presence in the taste. Ends of the cinnamon and dark chocolate followed the initial taste. The coffee was not particularly strong but evident. The tequila notes lingered in the aftertaste with a slight hint of roast coffee.

Mouthfeel - Though it was not overly thick, it did have a smooth body. It almost felt like a nitro stout.

Overall - Fantastic tequila stout!

Thanks to Roguer for this one, a “Mystery Beer” from NBS BIF #10. Poured, consumed, and reviewed blind.

22oz bottle poured into 14oz teku. Poured a thick, full black color with an inch of brown head that very good retention and no lacing.

Coffee at the front of the nose, strong coffee, with some roasted malt behind it. Maybe a bit of vanilla, maybe some booze (bourbon?).

Very similar on the tongue, with the addition of some very strong alcohol heat. Maybe some cocoa at the back end.

The body is thick and full, with a semi-sweet finish. Some alcohol/booze lingers at the back.

Drinkability is fine, the coffee seems to fade as I work through the bottle.

Overall, a nice beer. I’m assuming it’s a stout (but, I’ve been wrong on these things before), and it’s one you should try if given the chance.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 3/30/2017. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and rocky tan head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, dark roasted coffee, cinnamon, honey, agave, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, cream, tequila, toasted oak, roasted nuts, biscuit, and dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of licorice, molasses, toffee, raisin, fig, date, smoke, char, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toasted/oaky earthiness. Incredible aromas with fantastic complexity and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, coffee, cinnamon, tequila barrels, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with big strength. Taste of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, dark roasted coffee, cinnamon, honey, agave, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, cream, tequila, toasted oak, roasted nuts, biscuit, and dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of licorice, molasses, toffee, raisin, fig, date, smoke, char, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toasted/oaky earthiness. Very mild herbal, grass, pepper, roast, char bitterness; and cinnamon/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, dark roasted coffee, cinnamon, honey, agave, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, cream, tequila, toasted oak, roasted nuts, biscuit, dark/brown bread, licorice, molasses, toffee, dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toasted/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, coffee, cinnamon, tequila barrels, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a fantastic roasted bitter/sweet and cinnamon/oak spiciness balance; with no cloying/acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitter/spiciness. Light-medium carbonation and very full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/velvety/bready, and lightly slick/sticky/chalky/tannic mouthfeel that is fantastic. Mild increasing warmth 11.3%, and lingering cinnamon/tequila heat. Overall this is an amazing barrel aged flavored imperial stout! All around amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, coffee, cinnamon, tequila barrels, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV, with the mildly bitter/spicy/drying finish; amazingly soft/silky feel for the ABV. Perfectly balanced super rich malts, fruity/nutty coffee, cinnamon, and tequila barrel presence/integration. Mild hops/fruity yeast. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and top tier quality style example. Probably the best tequila barrel aged beer I've ever had. Not overwhelming on any aspect.

22oz bottle poured into a tulip

A- pours deep black in color with a one-finger foamy khaki colored head that reduces to a ring around the edge

S- Earthy, herbal and peppery espresso notes up front, followed by mocha cream and toffee. Beyond the coffee, plenty of cinnamon starts to pop out of the glass, light tequila closes it out

T- rich and creamy espresso up front mixes with a chocolate/mocha note that matches perfectly with the coffee; slightly nutty, brownie batter, caramel & toffee. Mid-palate brings out the tequila barrel, which comes across as a peppery note, with a touch of oak. The finish brings out the cinnamon, along with more rich coffee and mocha, the linger comes across with some actual tequila flavors

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a slightly creamy mouthfeel that continues into a slightly warming finish

O- rich coffee, mocha, cinnamon and tequila. All of the adjuncts work great together, another winner from FB

Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into an El Catador Barrel-Aged glass.

A: Very dark brown, nearly opaque, with a one-finger tan head with excellent retention. A low level of visible carbonation overall, but likely average for style.

S: Huge cinnamon, and the tequila aroma is almost as big. Some fruity and spicy notes, likely from the tequila (lime, cardamom, etc). A milder black coffee presence and the roasted malts. It's not a terrible aroma, but only if tequila and cinnamon are things you find appealing together.

T: Tequila and cinnamon again - big, up-front, and front-and-center. Again, some spice character - cardamom, maybe nutmeg. Coffee and some vanilla and chocolate from the malts. Mild oak tannins, but overall this stays pretty sweet and boozy, and is only partially balanced by the cinnamon. More cinnamon and citrus-forward tequila in the hang.

M: The body is on the light side for an Imperial Stout, especially one from Florida. Carbonation level is as expected. The alcohol presence is obvious but not obnoxious for something that's barrel-aged (especially in tequila barrels).

O: Well…there’s big cinnamon. I'm not digging the tequila and associated spices though. While trying to be objective, it's not a terrible beer. But it’s really not my favorite. The coffee is buried under the assault of tequila and cinnamon. And the notes from the other spices makes it seem almost like a Christmas beer. This isn't anything I’d look to repeat anytime soon.
