Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.30%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Buenos dias, amigos: We teamed up with Jose Cuervo to brew a seriously delicious cafe concoction. Mexican Coffee is an imperial stout blended with coffee, cinnamon, and sent out for an extended vacation inside reposado tequila barrels. The result is rich and roasty with a kiss of tequila; just like a classic cafe mexicano.

This beer is a nice change from the endless amount of stouts aged in bourbon barrels. The look is your typical FB dark brown stout with the thin layer of tan foam.

The smell is exactly what you would expect. You get a strong aroma of coffee and a definite whiff of the unmistakable Jose Cuervo Tequila. No cinnamon is detected.

The taste is the solid base stout that FB uses for many of their adjuncts. Dark malts that have a hint of chocolate. The coffee has a nice roasty flavor, you get a small taste of cinnamon (not as much as a Huna) and then a nice, not overpowering amount of JC Tequila on the back end. Nice balance.

The feel is a bit thin for a stout but I think it works. I personally don't want a heavy beer with a Mexican flavor like tequila.

Overall this is an excellent, creative stout that works. My only knock against the beer is that as a tequila drinker, I would have liked to see it aged in premium tequila barrels like Patron, Avion or Casa Noble. When I taste Jose Cuervo it always reminds me of a margarita or doing tequila shots in college. A smooth, high-end tequila would have taken this stout into another stratosphere (and also the price).

5/6/17 - Just opened my first bottle. Aroma now includes cinnamon unlike on tap. In addition, more cinnamon in the taste and a little less tequila and/or the tequila is more blended into the beer. One of the few times I like the bottled beer more than the tapped. If you like tequila at all, and you like FB Coffee Stouts/Porters, you must seek out this beer. I'm raising the smell to 4.75.

Taste is cinnamon coffee cake, some mellow fudge notes, coffee... Overly sweet as is the Funky Buddha way. The Cuervo reposado tequila BA treatment adds some complexity and depth to a beer I'd otherwise write off as just too sweet—some heat, barrel char and that almost botanical element that tequila barrels impart.

A cousin to Abraxas and Leche Borracho...

Enjoyed at Funky Buddha's Maple Bacon Coffee Porter Day on 1/9/2016. Just based on the description, this beer caught my attention right away. Overall, Mexican Coffee did not disappoint and was a tasty brew.

Too god damn sweat! Slight cinnamon flavor but no coffee presence at all, just a overly sweat mess. What a waste of $28, drain dump!

On tap at the brewery. Served in a snifter. Black body with a medium khaki head and thin collar. I never expect much from a tequila barrel, but this smells really nice. Some tequila. Mostly coffee and cinnamon. Taste has more tequila, which isn’t really what I’m looking for, but it’s not bad. Coffee and cinnamon are really prominent. Dark chocolate and spice in the finish. Heavy with medium carbonation. The aroma is the best part. After a while the booze takes its toll and the tequila becomes more apparent.

Pours black just like a dark cup of coffee. Has an excellent coffee smell with a nice finish of tequila. Tastes just like it smells with a nice addition of cinnamon to the finish. A bit thick but suits the beer well. Overall a great beer.
