Easily the most malty red ale I've ever had... more malt presence than most english barleywines, even. Yet lowish alcohol content. Ridiculous! Based on the first review, I wonder if this is the same beer as there is no floral hop presence whatsoever in the beer I drank, nor anything resembling a tea of any sort.

Dark in color (maroon-like), certainly darker than most reds on the market. Decent white head. You'll notice the high malt bill as soon as you raise the glass to your lips. I thought I detected a bit of coffee in the nose as well, but that just more roasted malts. There's a lot going on in the taste as well, with the central backbone being sweet malts. But not cloyingly sweet as some malt bombs can be, there is a good roast balance going on which explains the darker color.

Overall quite enjoyable, and a nice counterpart to some of the hop bombs on the guest tap list. Also blended well with hop gun to create a nice american red.

Notes from 7/2012

Slightly hazy deep amber, a bit more intense red than a typical amber. Quite fruity in the aroma and taste. Only a slight hop tinge on the front end of the taste, but malt quickly takes over. Some caramel malt present. Pretty tasty, but nothing too special. But I seem to only like hoppier ambers.

Served on tap in a pint glass

A - Gorgeous bronze hue with generous 2 finger ecru head with great retention and crude like sticky lacing, awesome.

S - Complex malt character, with a touch of floral and herbal hop notes

T - Rich malt flavors though surprisingly less sweet than many in the style, earthy, floral moderately bitter hops, savory.

M - Medium body, low carbonation. Chewy, gritty.

O - Nice hops balance, I due think it would be nicer with a touch more sweetness. Pretty rad name, though I'm sure the remake won't have the 80's cheese that makes this title awesome.

Growler pours a deep copper semi transluscent with a small khaki head.

Smells of roasted toffee & caramel malts. No hop presence.

On the palate is a nutty presence throughout with touches of roasty caramel malts. Nice body (6/10) for a Irish Red, and carbonated descently for a growler.

Overall, not bad at all - I usually dont like Red Ales, but this one is smooth.

Had during Brewvival 2012! Served from tap into a Brewvival sampler imperial pint. Poured red-orange with a half finger light tan head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, caramel, caramel hop, and brown sugar. The flavor was of sweet malt, caramel, caramel hop, sugar, and floral hop. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. If I'm honest, I went into this one thinking it was an American Red Ale, but the flavor and aroma was a little off. So at least now I know what it REALLY was. Despite not knowing which style this was it was a really solid brew that all the right flavors and aromas in all the right places. Another really well done brew from the crew at Funky Buddha.

a: reddish brown, touch cloudy and little to no carbonation. Looks syrupy thick.

s: hints of honey nectar, toffee and roasted nuts. Finish of the nose is quite herbal...floral hop

t: tastes right off the bat like green/chamomile tea with a touch of honey. Sweetness ensues and it finishes off with a nice nut brown flavor (hazelnut and caramel/toffee). Taste is just fantastic.

m: super rich and creamy. the thickness here perfect considering the flavor profile. Only downside to this beer so far is the complete lack of carbonation...though I feel this is partly due to the fact I'm having it from a growler.

o: wonder flavor. nice aroma. The fact there is no carb doesn't ruin this as the tea like qualities here work with that, but i feel the flavors would pop a bit more with that fizz. very solid brew and the first offering from the funky buddha I've had...hopefully not the last.

From tap to taster glass at The Funky Buddha Lounge on 6/2/12
*From notes

A: This looks like a Belgian Framboise. Cloudy, elegant red. A small half finger creamy head and plenty of lacing top the glass.

S: Wheat bread, warm butter and plenty of toasted malt. As it warms, a tart fruit core reveals itself.

T: Broiled caramel over spent grain. Rustic old school hops and some medium char. Hints of cinnamon drizzle as it warms.

M: A bit thinner then the FB's other offerings. The carbonation is great, yet the overall presentation is slightly lacking.

O: Like the majority of the FB's beer I had this day, I wasn't overly impressed. I can say with ease that this is above average, yet nowhere near the lofty status I was expecting. A decent Irish Red, of which I could crush a few. But certainly not the best in-style.

First had: on tap at Funky Buddha, Boca Raton, FL

Basic beer, a staple at the brewery. Dark reddish-brown pour, hazy, with a finger or so of frothy off-white head that retained well and left some lacing on the glass. Aroma of bready malts, toasted grains, caramel, notes of fruit salad. More of the same in the taste, sweet caramel malts, toasted bread, hints of apple and pear, nice hop bitterness in the finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Nothing ground-breaking, but a solid, simple option that goes down easy.
