Sweet Potato CasseroleSweet Potato Casserole

Brewed by:
Funky Buddha Brewery
Florida, United States

Style: Fruit / Vegetable Beer

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.90%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Drop the dressing and ditch the pumpkin, Sweet Potato Casserole is fresh out of the oven and ready to party. This fall treat is just like moms used to make - only if moms had penchant for gooey marshmallow, fall spices, and gobs of sweet potato cavorting in one sinful glass. Bottoms up.

Food pairings suggestions:
Turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, and gravy. Pecan pie. Roast pork loin. Salisbury steak. Corned beef hash. Pumpkin pancakes with walnuts and maple syrup.

One of the best beers I've ever had. Tastes like candied yams. The flavors are unreal, but somehow it isn't too sweet. Awesome favored beer that actually has some strength.

Has a very murky golden look with a very little white head. I could smell a something sweet to it. Probably marshmallows. You can taste a hint of sweet potatoes mixed with cinnamon.

Probably my biggest surprise this season. I don't typically enjoy sweet potatoes, but damn I just hadn't tried them the right way. I will look forward to this every Fall, probably even more than most of my favorite pumpkin beers.

I'm from FL so I love this local brewery- its literally down the street. I'm not much for doing in depth reviews, but I feel this beer deserves my 2 cents because it is awesome. Pumpkin beers are all over the place, but this is a twist on the same concept. The smell is dead on-sweet potato casserole, so is the taste. Not over spiced, you can taste vanilla and you for sure taste sweet potato. In the defense of others who had a bad batch of this beer-yes, I have had this one and it have a metallic taste. This batch was perfect and usually I have no issues. They are a very small brewery so there is variations that are noticeable from time to time. It's best on tap. Cheers to a good fall beer!

Had in October 2015.
Enjoyable fall and winter time beer. The smell is sweet. It is a powerfully sweet potato loaded flavor but ultimately fun to drink.

L: Similar to a nut brown ale in appearance. Dark brown. Medium head.
S: Powerful sweet potato and toasted marshmallow. Enoyable on a cool evening.
T: A strong punch of sweet potato. Very sweet. Could be a bit much. More of a desert item than a beer to drink in quatity. However, there are a good balance of spices in the beer to add to the depth of the flavor.
F: Medium carbonation, good balance of the spices in the beer to allow you to get some depth in the flavor profile.
O: Overall better than expected beer. Looked like it was going to be overly sugary, but it turned out to be a very well executed desert beer.

Served on-tap at Funky Buddha 10/4. Leftover from their 2nd Anniversary Celebration

A: Pours mahogany with a small cap. Decent retention

S: Definitely lives up to the name, this is awesome and has every note typical of a sweet potato casserole; holiday spices, toasted marshmallow, brown sugar, and certainly sweet potato. Impressive and creative!

T: Nailed it, what else can you say. A little on the sweet side but not cloyingly so. A sipper for sure.

MF/O: Smooth mellow carbonation, cinnamon marshmallow finish. Alcohol is very well hidden, but one or two of these is probably enough in one sitting. Definitely one of those novelty beers that happen to be delicious.

Bottled on October 5, 2015 enjoyed January 18, 2016 in a Mad Elf tulip.

Look - Color of sweet potato, weird right? A lot less than a finger of white head settles to a very thin ring. Blotchy lacing.

Smell - Marshmallow. Spice.

Taste - I've had this taste before, but can't put my finger on it. It is almost like the grain covering on a Nutrigrain bar. Marshmallow.

Feel - Enough carbonation so it isn't flat but not too much to make it unsettling. Spice on tongue but no alcohol.

Overall - I am very happy with this beer. I would have been just fine to give this out as gifts from my Florida trip. Marshmallow, cinnamon, and the Nutrigrain covering.

Poured from a 12oz bottle (bottled on 10Sep15) into a snifter at 40°F.
LOOK: Pours with two finger's worth of off-white foam that halves itself after 45 seconds. Amber in color with a moderate amount of cloudiness. There's a plethora of medium-sized bubbles rising to the top of the glass. Lacing is thick and high.
SMELL: Has mild aromas of vanilla, cinnamon, sweet potato, baked pie crust, and marshmallows. Yeah. This is basically a sweet potato casserole blended up into a bottle.
TASTE: Strong flavors of vanilla and cinnamon enter initially and are immediately followed by strong flavors of baked pie crust and mild flavors sweet potato. Strong marshmallow flavors enter lastly as all previous flavors persist except for sweet potato, which grow stronger.
FEEL: Somewhere between medium-bodied and light-bodied. There are hints of carbonation. This has to be the smoothest and most creamy beer that I have ever had. Finishes with a subtle dryness.

Wow. I was surprised. I thought it was gonna maybe be one of those beers that tries to do too much. It wasn't. It is sweet but not nasty sweet. It is a lot more balanced than I expected. Gonna get some more to share with my brother from California over thanksgiving turkey.

Rating this on what they were going for. They hit it!
Mild carbonation. Nose is very sweet, almost candy-like. Flavor follows suit and is indicative of the name of this beer.
I like novelties, and Funky Buddha as well. This beer hits the mark on what they were aiming for.

Poured a slightly cloudy pumpkin-amber. Less head than expected, also fairly this.

Smell is not extraordinary: malty with a hint of vanilla.

Taste: wow. Crème with vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and a slight earthiness, likely from the sweet potato.

Feel: thinner than expected, but not unpleasant. Almost soda-like. But it is impressive considering the abv.

The beer offers sweet potato as advertised, although with not much flavor difference from a pumpkin beer as spices are the defining quality. Flavors include strong ginger, then cinnamon, allspice, restrained caramel, toasty malts, marshmallow sweetness on the finish.

Bottle received as an extra in a recent trade.

This one pours a slightly murky orange, with a small head, and a just a little bit of lacing.

Smells like sweet potato, vanilla cream and marshmallow, and some cinnamon.

This one ultimately succeeds because the spicing is minimal and complementary to the rest of the beer, rather than being the star, which it definitely could have been. There is way more marshmallow and sweet potato here than anything else, and it's executed well and correctly, in my opinion. It definitely gives off the impression of gooey stickey marshmallow in a sweet potato pie. Funky Buddha is really good at recreating a dessert in a beer.

This is medium bodied, a bit creamy, with a lower level of carbonation.

Another nicely done beer here from Funky Buddha. Side note- the marshmallows on the label threw me off, because they look like cartoon teeth, rather than marshmallows.

Very sweet, after-dinner type beer. Has all the flavors of Granny's sweet potato casserole without being too cloying. Very enjoyable in a 12 ounce snifter with Joel Bernstein while in Hollywood for a deposition.

my buddy mark tossed me a bottle of this earlier so I could get a taste and when I asked him how it was, he said....

it's kinda like pumpking...the first time you have it, you are amazed but by the gird it the you find that it is a bit too sweet and kinda artificial...

spot on. first bottle though and still amazed. hits the mark for the flavor it is going for.

Appearance: Arrives at the bar rather murky, with a tan color and a modest head; a few wisps of lacing hang around

Smell: Sweet potato, marshmallow, cinnamon and clove

Taste: Starts out with the malt bill forward, bringing candied sweet potatoes and marshmallow flavors; cinnamon, clove and allspice build, through the middle, with some ginger snap crispness in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: I am not the biggest fan of pumpkin beers but this twist using sweet potatoes is pretty tasty

12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass

A- pours a clear deep amber color with a small fizzy white head that eventually disappears completely, leaving nothing behind

S- smells like Thanksgiving; lots of fresh cinnamon up front with notes of creamy marshmallow, brown sugar & vegetal sweet potato, pretty much spot on

T- lots of cinnamon flavor hits first, followed by sweet vanilla and marshmallow, brown sugary pie crust and whipped sweet potato. The finish gives more cinnamon and a linger of nutmeg

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and finish

O- again, FB manages to make a beer that tastes just like it's label suggests. Very good vegetable beer.

A: Burnt orange, thin off white head, good lacing

S: Bread, fruity sweetness that maybe the sweet potato that I am picking up on, spices like clove and vanilla

T: I get those spices, mixed with the potato sweetness, I also get some dark fruit like some raisin or prune that I didnt get in the smell and the bread at the end

M: Medium

O: A beer that really earns its name. I love sweet potato casserole especially here at Thanksgiving time and I was excited when I seen it in the case in Orlando's Whole Foods. Great taste and a pleasure to drink.

F: smooth with a crisp bite at the end.

O: this is quite good for what they are going for. Well done. Basically thanksgiving dessert.

Had over Thanksgiving and loved it. It was legit, straight up as advertised with this one. Marshmallow dominated for me with a sweet potato underbelly. As with Funky Buddha, and No Crusts, if you can get to the taproom while this is on and have it fresh its a delight and worth the trip.

Pours a murky orange-brown with a billowing yellow head. Inviting pungent aroma of caramelized brown sugar, roasted marshmallow and baked yams. The taste profile is as expected, sweet burnt marshmallows, caramel, some bitter spice and a long lasting vanilla finish. A tasty fall brew that is marred only by the strong alcohol presence throughout the session.

Out of a bottle into my pint glass.
A - Poured out a golden amber with minimal white head that settled and faded quickly.
S – Not much of an aroma. Very light vanilla.
T – I’ll be damned it does taste like sweet potato casserole! Sweet potatoes are the first flavor. Vanilla comes next with some cinnamon and nutmeg. Not at all sweet. Just a touch of alcohol at the finish.
M – Lively on the palate. Medium carbonation.
O – Wasn’t sure about this one but it’s good. Very easy to drink. Tastes a great deal like a casserole. Probably not for everyone but if you want a good brew for Thanksgiving and hate the pumpkins..here you go.
