Poured on tap to a 12oz tulip-ish glass at the Funky Buddha Lounge in Boca Raton, FL. Written from notes taken a few weeks ago while on a trip to FL for an interview. (Not that that matters.) The bar tender was suuuper cool and really friendly. Whoever she is, she deserves a tip. And this was particularly fun because I met and hung out with George. Super dude. Onto the review!

Appearance (3.5): This pours with basically no head—just a thin film capping a hazy, yellow-gold body with deep straw tones. Very thin collars here and there . . . I don’t know what you’d call this, skeleton lacing? It’s not surprising for the style, and the lacing is not bad (for the style).

Smell (3.75): Some stinky cheese, pale biscuit-like breadiness, well-toasted white bread, and some citrusy hops—mostly a sweet pineapple kind of tone. Again, kinda lines up with the beer’s name rather aptly: Berliner Weisse base, but apparently with some hops thrown in.

Taste (4.0): Lightly tart, mildly lactic, but light on the cheesiness . . . there’s a mild yogurt sourness, paired with evenly-matched hop flavor along the lines of sweetened red grapefruit juice making for a lightly sweet combination. Kind of like mango-flavored greek yogurt, but in spritzy, chuggable beer form. This is a nicely-balanced, modestly tart Berliner with only a light funk.

Mouthfeel (4.0): Soft carbonation comes across with a mild tingle all over . . . it’s got an easy feel, light-medium weight and a dry finish—just moderately dry, surprisingly. Very easy to drink, though.

Overall (3.75): This is a good, only lightly tart Berliner with a nice dry-hop character—a really nice intro to Berliners and pale, hoppy beers for a lot of people, at the same time. Interesting mix. It’s not excellent, but definitely on the upside of decent, and the hopping makes it worth checking out if you’re into Berliners. Very tasty, and glad to have tried.

On tap at the brewery's grand opening. Served in an oversized snifter.

Appearance - Slightly hazy golden orange. Arrives with a nice white head. Retains a nice white collar and a lonely island of foam.

Smell - Hoppy, for sure. Not aggressively so, though. Citrus hop. Lemony aroma. Grainy.

Taste - Hop flavor up front. Citrus and then the lemon flavor takes over. Again, it has that kind of Thera Flu flavor. Not as strong as the Jasmine Berliner through. Grainy in the back.

Mouthfeel - Pretty tart. Lemon chemical sourness. It lingers on the palate too.

Overall - It has a very odd sourness. I don't love it. Gonna check out another Berliner later and see if I get the same thing.
