Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The big sister to our Bonita Applebum Apple Pie Brown, Muy Bonita is a bigger, badder ‘bum. This double brown ale flaunts a bodacious body and a stunning combination of real cinnamon, vanilla, and apples. So thick, she’s like a hip hop song.

Okay, so first I'd like to mention I happen to be a big Funky Buddha fan. I tend to love a lot of their beers. I've had Bonita Apple Bum a few times on draft and I absolutely love it too. I figured I'd feel the same about this one since it's the "big sister". I don't know what happened during the botteling process, but this one fell flat, big time. I bought my 22 oz straight from the brewery like I usually do and I've gone through 3 bottles already. So far, 2 out of 3 have had virutually no head whatsoever. I poured hard from start to finish and nothing :/ Of course this flatness will greatly affect my sipping experience; hence the low rating. The flavor is still there; it just doesn't have any carbonation to back it up. I'll just assume I received a bad batch of bottles from them.

A mahogany body with a tall butter colored head, 3 fingers.

Aroma of cinnamon and backyard apples, underneath some lightly toasted malts. Slight vanillaroma tree.

Oops. This bottle is infected. Damn. At least i hope it is (I would hate it if this were how it normally is). Cinnamon and mushy apple are there but kind of artificial. But there's sour milk, burnt brown sugar, old hop, and burnt alcohol mucking it up. Its gross.

Feel is hot and carbonated.

Cutting this review short. Maybe some time I'll get one that's not infected.

had this bottle for way too long, looked interesting tonight, so why not. brew is heavily carb bed so much so that the head was a bit explosive, eventually settled into a frothy creamy cap reminiscent of Belgian classics. on first sips and sniffs this was horrendously disgusting...but as it opened up and settled (and I got used to the prickly carbonation) the flavors popped creating a super artificial almost cake like thing. nose remains off putting w a strong char but the heavy vanilla on the taste seems to wash over the apple cinammon. the whole thing tastes REALLY artificial, as most of these do...and I find myself towing the line of wanting to pour it down the drain or have one more sip. interesting but the artificial is just too much for me on this one. prbably a fantastic bottle to open when 15 deep in a tasting and your palate is shot....cause this would definitely cut through.

On tap at the Brewery. Served in a snifter.

Appearance - Deep murky brown with a nice white head. Thick collar. Kinda pond watery.

Smell - Lots of cinnamon and spices. Some apple and caramel.

Taste - Lots of caramel. Like a caramel candy apple. Cinnamon spice kicks up in the back with a spike a booze.

Mouthfeel - Thick and kinda heavy. Sluggish to drink.

Overall - Pretty accurate treatment, but very sweet.

Deep copper/light brown color with a smallish off white head. Brown sugary light chocolate fruity creamy. Its pretty tasty like dessert in a glass.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a J. Wakefield Brewing teku glass.

A: Pours a very hazy, though still slightly translucent, rich brown. Low visible carbonation, and a under a finger’s worth of tan head that fades quickly.

S: Cinnamon and vanilla, toasted malts – seems fairly sweet. A touch of the cardboard I get from brown-roasted malts. Bits of dark fruit and cinnamon apples as well.

T: Cinnamon up front, with sweet toasted malts and vanilla. I guess apples…it still tastes just as much like dark fruit (raisons, etc.) to me. Sweet fruit persists with the cinnamon in the hang – more apple flavor comes out as it sits on the palate after the swallow (and as it warms).

M: Full-bodied for a brown ale, but maybe a touch lighter than most “double browns” I’ve had. Alcohol content seems restrained, though there’s a bit of alcohol heat after the swallow. Low carbonation sensation.

O: Not objectionable, and better than I remember it being the last time I had it on tap at Funky Buddha. This might be as good as an apple/vanilla/cinnamon brown ale could be…it’s still just not my favorite beer though.
