Located on the first floor of an excellent hotel, The Brew itself boasts an impressive layout as well, with inside, outside, as well as covered-patio seating. I believe they have music every night, as was the case when I went. They give brewery tours on Wednesdays although I was there on a Monday, so, alas.
Turning from the atmosphere to the beer, as is usually the case when I visit a new brewery, I went with the sampler. They have a total of eight beers on tap, but the sampler was for only seven. In order to finish the entire selection, I had to buy a single extra glass which seemed unnecessary.
The beers were alright, but not remarkable. My favorite was a seasonal offering with Oolong Tea Berries infused into a light and refreshing drink. The Brew has five "regulars" and three "rotating" from what I gathered by their menu. In addition, I wanted a bottle to take back with me to Hong Kong, which as it turns out, must be bought through the hotel, not the brewery itself. You can get their Pilsner and IPA in a bottle via the hotel, at 55RMB each.
Overall, I am glad I went to The Brew, as it was a destination I had from even before arriving in Shanghai. I would go again, but probably only on a Wednesday so I could get the complete experience with a tour, able to talk to the brewer himself about some of the issues with their beer...

Everything at The Brew is overpriced and not worth it. The food is okay and the beers range from decent to terrible. Would not recommend.

The Brew is located in the Kerry Hotel, which was a bit hard to find since Google Maps thought it was in the middle of the closed park across the street. The pub itself is on the first floor of the hotel, with the big brew setup enclosed in glass in the middle of the restaurant. It has a nice outdoor pavilion which is nice to sit in when the smog lifts from time to time.

There was a business conference in the area and the bar was filled with Germans, so it must have some sort of reputation, and they did serve a few German style beers.

The beers themselves were decent, nothing too special, but for something in the middle of Shanghai which is short on decent beer spots, it's quite nice. They have 7 beers that are almost always on, one of them being a rotating seasonal, and one being a brewers choice. They do have a sampler on a paddle so you can try them all which is very helpful if you don't know anything about their beers. They also had a handful of bottles which were mostly German imports, a couple Belgian, couple cheap American, and plenty of cheap China beers.

The service was awful. The waitress took a long time to even ask for our beer order. Then when the food came, she served my friend's meal, and she seemed to completely forget to put my order in, as the pizza I ordered came about 20 minutes later after I complained and my friend was completely done with his meal. They did give me a full pour of one beer as a sorry, despite being really hungry, a free beer wasn't too bad to get..

The food itself was pretty good, I got a special pizza which was cooked OK, typical brew pub style food. They seem to blend many different styles of cuisine, and the menu was pretty big. The food looked fancy and my friend's meal was good he said. However, the prices were a bit on the high side, as were any of the fancy restaurants we went to in Shanghai, so par for the course I guess.
