12.7oz. bottle - 2016 vintage

Pours cloudy hazy orange with a good amount of sediment right now sinking to the bottom, and a creamy frothy white foam head that settles to a thin ring around the glass. Smells real nice and elegant, almost like a tart hoppy saison, with notes of strong leather, some barnyardy funk, peppery spice, clean citrus peel, lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange, hints of musty pineapple, tropical passionfruit, tart apple, tannic red wine, oak barrel, subtle vanilla, dark toasty malt, with dusty bitter earthy resinous floral herbal pine. Tastes more pungent and fruity, a little intense and hoppy with brett funk, notes of leather, slight horse blanket barnyard farmhouse funk, hay, phenol spice, fruity esters like tart apple, pear, apricot, musty pineapple, tropical passionfruit, clean lemony citrus, lime, orange peel, grapefruit pith, some vinous red fruit character, red wine oak barrel, subtle vanilla, toasty malts, and dusty bitter earthy resinous floral herbal pine. Feels medium plus bodied, thick and slick, creamy smooth with moderate carbonation. Fairly drying in the finish with a refreshing crispness, leaving lightly funky leathery phenols and toasty barrel notes lingering with an earthy hoppy bitterness. Overall a nice red wine barrel aged brett IPA.

Bottle is at least a year old, so it has conditioned a while. Very clean and elegant look of the bottle and the cork and cage is a very nice touch. Pours light orange-yellow with a huge head. It is unfiltered and hazy, so I left the floaters in the bottle. Smells of mild mustyness, reminiscent of a Belgian ale and has a floral hint like a flower shop. It is well carbonated, with small effervescent bubbles until the last sip. Head retention diminishes to under 1/8 inch for the remainder of finishing it. On the front end you can taste the Brett immediately, while on the back end there is a slightly fruityness with a dry crisp hop note. They call it an IPA, however I would not label it traditional in the least. It appears to be lowering IBU and is 6.3% ABV. The aging on red wine barrels gives it a nice added layer of complexity.

Bottle at the Parched Pig. Pours orange with a huge head and lots of floaty bits. Smells of red wine, grapefruit and pine hops, and some musty fruitiness. Taste is much more bretty. Immediate Brett flavor. Earthy and bitter. Red wine. Still retains some grapefruit. Back end is fruity, yeasty, and bitter. Well carbonated. I can't imagine this is all that fresh and is hardly what I'd call an IPA, but the grain and yeast profile that BFB uses works in this treatment as well.

Good beer. Near perfect mouthfeel. Pleasant amount of funk in this one - not so much "horse blanket" as it is over ripened fruit with a hint of (I swear) processed meat a la Vienna Sausage on the finish. This is a proper table beer that welcomes interpretation.

these guys are just heroic right now, i still am yet not not absolutely adore everything i have had from them, and i continue to purchase them at the same rate at which they make it to the shelves. this is a belgian ipa, fermented or refermented with brett, and aged in red wine barrels, and while that almost sounds like too many elements at work, it really somehow isnt. cloudy pale color, nothing showing from the red wine, and so lively it is almost hard to control on the pour, quite a bit of sediment at the bottom of the little bottle, necessary i know, but sometimes a little unflattering. aroma of tangy lively brett, almost too much of it before the fruity and acidic wine elements kick in, and the earthy wood. the hops are less pungent in the nose than they are in the flavor, but do show some wet citrus there too. the flavor is really balanced between all of these elements, yeast i still think out in front, belgian fruitiness of pear and apple give way to the farmy musty funk, somewhat more mature and forward than it is in their other wild beers. the hops come on later but have a lot of freshness and oils to them, subtle peach and lemon here, with the grassy bitterness it needs to balance the sweet cane sugar and vanilla that the oak lends to this. red wine is there too, black cherry and bright tannins. complex to say the least, but like all of their beer, subtle at the right moments, and well integrated. it is aided by wonderful carbonation and a pleasing dry finish. i am fully obsessed with these guys now, and will continue to be until i have something other than insanely amazing beer from them. this is worth the ticket price without a doubt, and one of the better takes on the style i have encountered in a long time.
