This is a bright mahogany-hued beer based on a recipe from medieval times with a rye dominant malt bill. It has a rye breadiness, a spicy fruitiness and a faintly sour and dry finish. This Roggenbier is a touch smoky, tart and sweet with characteristics of banana and clove.

5.0% ABV, 20 IBU, Hops: Hallertau, Czech Saaz

I tried this at the brewery. It poured a murky brownish orange with no head and no lace. The scent had subtle bread notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with faint grain presence. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it was an ok beer.

definitely not my favorite beer from fate, had on tap at falling rock. its a murky brown ale looking brew, not much head on it after a minute, and with weird high fermentation temperature character, its not flattering to the rye base, and although the style is very traditional, i dont really think this interpretation of it is. its hard to drink much of really, pretty thick and basically no carbonation, and it never really finishes. there is plenty of rye flavor to it for sure, different than the normal spice complex you get from it because i think the rye has a little toast to it, so its more of a bready thing, fresh, but weird with the chocolate notes in the beer, like its a little darker and heavier than they meant it to be. i also cant place the yeast, which sort of overpowers the finish and makes this tough to understand and to drink. it also doesnt warm up super well, but i appreciate the effort, and tend to give these guys the benefit of the doubt because some of their beer is so good. not their best though i dont think.

edit: way better (and fresher) on tap at the brewery, a far better example of the style than i originally suspected. maybe they have made some tweaks since the original review above, but this is pretty solid overall if you have it at the source...
