It pours an orange yellow with a decent sized head. The aroma is pine, resin, mild tangerine, bitter berries, and a light biscuit malt in the rear. The flavor is good. Bitter upfront, which gives way to a mild sweetness. It has an oily feel, which I like in IPAs. This is an homage to the beers that put San Diego on the map. I feel like people might be disappointed when comparing thus to the type if beer MT normally makes, but for what it is, I find it excellent.

This was a highly recommended beer from a salesman in the beer isle at Whole Foods in DTLA. And that's where it stops. Nothing special, but I finished it off because I wanted to catch a buzz while watching Star Trek TOS with my family. Yes, Star Trek. I mean, this beer is better than Sam Adams, but not much better.

This seems to find the moderate ground in everything— strong but smooth, deliriously malty but not too sweet. hops galore but modestly bitter. Passion fruit and mango sorbet in the nose. Golden with an orange tinge and abundant foam in the St. Bernardus globe.

Another winner in the aromatic DIPA sweepstakes— and there have been some real nags lately. I can't even count all the fruity flavors. The bitterness is just an afterthought. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at the Modern Times brewery.

Pours a clear golden-orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. A foamy lattice of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus zest, grapefruit juice, tropical fruit, and earthy hop aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest, grapefruit juice, tropical fruit, and pine needle flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a nice mix of hop qualities that lean more towards the citrus side of the spectrum to me.

Serving type: bottle.

22oz bottle split between a couple of taster glasses
Last noted from 10.07.15

This is a nice DIPA but falls a tad short of being something really great. Well balanced in that it hides the alcohol well.
Bright straw gold with minimal hop haze as the refined beverage comes to settle in the glass. Capped with smallish layer of bone white suds. Light dots of stick noted.
Grassy resinous pine needle and mild dank herbals with a distinct earthiness. Some restrained grapefruit and tropical flora. Decent pale malt backbone and a light honey like sweetness. Flavor is sticky dank oils, grass, and earthy evergreens answered by some juicy grapefruit and spiced papaya. Malty caramel, bread, and cracker all come together with a hit of earthy hop bitterness that lingers. Super dry finish. Slight grainy quality. Was hoping for a bit more pop but still has some nice flavors.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: Stone Ruination IPA pint glass
From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $8.99
Purchased: Oct. 15, 2015
Consumed: Oct. 15, 2015
Misc.: N/A

Poured a honey, apple juice-looking, clear color with 3-to-4 fingers of frothy, white head. A good deal of bubbles coming up from the bottom on the sides of the glass. Very good amount of uneven, circular, foamy, spiderweb lacing on the sides of the glass. Excellent retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 4.25)

Smelled Chinook, Juicy Fruit, pine, dry Centennial, floral, Citra, tropical, light passion fruit and spicy Simcoe late. (Smell - 4.25)

Taste wasn’t as good as the nose and seemed to be a bit unfinished or unbalanced. Got boozy Chinook, dry soapy pine, floral, perfume, spicy Simcoe, tropical, earthy mango rind, faint resin and dry Centennial. (Taste - 3.75)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Lively carbonation. Abrupt, boozy, astringent finish. (Feel - 3.75)

This had some moments, but I think it could have been a lot better. I’d probably try it again though, if there wasn’t anything else better. (Overall - 3.75)

Golden yellow. White head. Good looking dipa

Smells is malt, pine, citrus. Not as hop forward as you would expect from a San Diego double iPa

Mild tast, hops, pine.

Good beer. Just fails to stand out in a crowded field.

Very nice light color for a 2IPA, clear, head popped up then quickly settled. Aroma and taste a great balance of smooth citrus/pine bitterness. Feel/body just right, further example that 2IPAs at mid-high 8s %ABV are my preference.
