Enjoyed at Toronado as part of a special Modern Times take over day. Largely dank smell. Stronger than I expected, given the advice the bartender gave me (advising that the Mega Blazing World was very strong). Lots of lemon, lemon grass, Persian lime, and the slightest touch of of juniper. Like a gin and tonic in the nose. Super light, super fluffy palate. And HELLO, there's the grapefruit. Bright, fresh, clean and cloudy. Like a grapefruit foam, honestly. The beer version of nouveau gastro cuisine. Long grapefruit aftertaste that's super clean and super clear and super fruity. The most brilliant, freshesht expression of grapefruit I've ever had in a beer.

Bottle I had yesterday was dated 07/28/16. Could tell it had some age on it with the amount of maltyness coming through. Although not undrinkable, I don't feel I got the true flavors of this beer, still descent though.

This beer is so tasty. It pours a blonde-golden color with a lot of fluffy head.
The aroma is of candied grapefruit rinds, light lemon, bread, and pine.
Flavor is so delicious. Tons of lovely grapefruit, juicy orange, cracker, with a finish of lemon.
Feel is crisp and smooth, yet still creamy.
Overall this beer is so good it's not worth philosophising over, it's just something you tip back and enjoy the heck out of. I love it. Boom.

A: A bright golden yellow with some bubbles. Not much head. Light passes directly through - clearly a filtered beer.
S: I'm really not picking much up on the nose. What I do pick up contains some light fruity aromas. A little buttery. Very slightest hint of grapefruit.
T: Definitely getting a bit of the grapefruit. I'm also getting a little bit of that buttery taste. Not much in the way of malts or hops.
M: Drinks like an easy-going beer. It's very light overall. Not much alcohol and has the mouthfeel of a lager or pilsner.
O: I'm let down with this. Perhaps because this beer is 4 months old? I'm not sure. It's not very sweet or fruity and I don't get much in the way of hops.

Just like the regular Fortunate Islands now with real grapefruit added.
Actually this is one of those instances in which the fruit additions not only complements but also enhances the base brew.
The color hits somewhere between a dark golden and a pale amber. Nicely conditioned for that pristine look. Effervescent with bubbles expanding up into a cloud of frothy white.
A surprise of…Grapefruit up front. Very real and natural citrus oils in the nose. Pithy and slightly herbal. Wheaty grains and a bit of floral essence make up the rest.
Grapefruit front and center with a trailer of earthy pith/rind and herbs. Zesty and forward with some real natural citrus flavor. Wheat malt shines through in the base. Original hops become a bit lost but this is still nice. Moderate to lower side of the bittering scale. Very light and sometimes watery but with a nice drying crisp. Makes for good balance here. I enjoyed this more than the base brew I feel however scores slightly lower if that makes any sense at all.

A tasty update to the original Fortunate, which has been frustratingly inconsistent for me otherwise. As advertised, this smacks you with grapefruit zest right off the top and keeps swinging on the palate. I appreciate that - if you're gonna make a grapefruit-laced hoppy beer, let 'er rip, I say. Well done.

Bottled date of 07/28/16
Appearance - Pours slightly hazy and golden orange in color with an off-white, half finger width head that fizzes away fairly quickly, leaving behind a mostly barren surface and a thin, bubbly ring around the edge of the glass.
Smell - Tons of grapefruit on the nose. Underlying wheat.
Taste - Big punch of grapefruit essence upfront, then dies a quick, watered down death. Faint wheat and some mild lemon in the finish to go with the grapefruit.
Mouthfeel - Light-bodied with low-to-moderate carbonation. Easy drinker, but watery on the finish.
Overall - Nearly as weak as the original incarnation, but with the obviously added grapefruit zest to the brew. I'd say this may have been a victim of old age, but it's only 4 months since the bottling date and the OG was nearly as weakly flavored. Maybe I should give Mega Fortunate Islands a go? If I do, no expectations will be had for it.
