Looks like I first had this back in 2014 in the bottle, and a few times after on tap, yet haven't reduced it to a written review yet.

Pours black. 1/4" brown head. Big roastiness in the aroma. We're in standard territory here. No alcohol perceptible in the nose at least. Might pull some licorice, caramel and nuttiness out of it.

Taste is one you know, and prolly know well, its a big ass double digit, heavy roast, massive quantity of malt kind of imperial stout. You can mention all the possible things, raisins, coffee, pine, earth, scorch, roast, chocolate, fudge,

I thought the alcohol was present, but understandable at this level. Unfortunately a lot of "reviewers" think this is the bourbon barrel version, but no dude. Its basically a generic tier Speedway Stout. Since Speedway is pretty awesome, so is this virtual copycat (with more quad/dark fruit notes) of it to a lesser degree.

Truly one of the best beers I've had in years. This drinks like an heir to the throne of former greats like bourbon county coconut... Which is interesting because I don't think this has or advertises any coconut qualities... But it is thick and smooth and delicious and sweet and roasty and sweet - but all in moderated quantities that just comes together beautifully.

We got massive, punch in the face, notes of coconut filling our mouths, and were rather surprised that it seems unintentional. Strong, boozy, and dark, this beer is the type of stout that will end your night, regardless of how much beer you can drink.

2019 Edition: 14.2% ABV (!)

An excessively strong RIS packaged in a cute little can that reminds me of nice wallpaper from the late 1800's.

Pours is very black and fairly limp and that's about what I'd expect from a beer of this magnitude.

Smells of intense vanilla and whiskey. Basically imagine BCBS but then up it a good two or three degrees. The aroma is decadent in the best possible way, intense but not cloying, but zero burn, zero gimmick, and zero off nodes. Superb.

Tastes damn near as good as it smells. It's been well over a decade now that brewers have been attempting to out-smooth and out-whiskey Bourbon County, and dag gum I think the fellas over at Modern Times might have actually cracked this nut. Lightly boozy milk chocolate starts things out, moving to a lightly burny and heavily sweet middle, finishing on some intense, but not too intense, nodes of bourbon and marshmallows. This is exquisite.

Pours jet black on tap at North Park Flavordome. Sample taster was just enough.

Aroma is chocolate overload. Lots of bourbon. It is very reminiscent of bourbon county.

Taste is more chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, oak, and alcohol heat. Again has a very close bourbon county character, but there is definitely more of a alcohol bite. Mouthfeels are similar with maybe a bit more carbonation with the monsters park. Super pumped to finally try this!

Overall, this is a great beer and something I didn’t expect to be on tap. I would happily drink again. However, I still would gravitate to a bourbon county given the same character without the alcohol burn and high price. Will be excited to try the variants of this beer!it gets a 91.5/100.

Bought a couple of bottles a few years ago and have now had this beer fresh, as well as aged for one, two, and three years. This one has only gotten better with age. I just had my last one, unfortunately, which was three years old and the best one yet. This beer only gets smoother with age. Pours a very dark brown with just a bit of foam that dissipates quickly. Aroma of chocolate and roasted coffee with a bit of sweet dark fruit. All the flavors come together better as time goes on. Taste is dominated by dark fruit and chocolate with roasted coffee playing in the background. The 12% ABV is completely unnoticed as time goes on. Feel is on the plus side of medium. Overall, this is a phenomenal beer that ages very well and continues to improve as time goes on. I know that this beer now solely serves as the base for adjunct variations of Monsters' Park, but I would love for Modern Times to bring this back as a special release again. I would love to have the opportunity to buy a dozen bottles to hold onto for several years.

Pours black as night, with just a little bit of foam.

Smell is big and bold, notes of arrack, raisins and treacle.

Massive hits of coffee and treacle on the tongue, bolstered by some notes of raisins and nuts. Tastes almost like a mix of mostly stout and a little bit of a quad.

Mouthfeel is thick and oily.

Overall, a very good stout, balanced, yet massive. Would love to try some of the variants.

The 2016 has a sour taste that I never found in a bourbon aged Imperial Stout. Like all sours I don't know if I like it or dislike, what I do know is I had better.

L - Inky black body with a finger of light brown head

S - Sweet bourbon, oak, coffee, black licorice, cherries, raisins, leather

T - Bourbon first, but swept away by cherry cordials. Bitter dark coffee, wood, tiny bit of char, dark fruits.

F - Not the thickest BA stout, but still good. Absolutely NO trace of alcohol.

O - I think of the base stouts flavors popped more, the this would creep closer to the elite. Still a big bastard of a beer that can be sipped on and enjoyed for hours.

Treacle, licorice, chocolate, boozy dark fruit on the nose. Roast hides in the back, but starts to come forward as the beer warms.

Dark black beer; poor head retention.

Flavor is everything you'd expect: dark molasses and chocolate malt, quickly giving way to a huge wave of roasted barley. That is followed in turn by a big hit of boozy heat, and a tinge of grapes. The finish is all roast, brown sugar, and molasses.

A touch hot for the ABV, but this is a big bold stout that stands with Stone IRS, Ten-Fidy, and other classic imperial stouts. Well done!

Pours a dark blackish brown with a brown head. Looked thin and less viscous compared to other imperial stouts I've seen. Aroma and flavors of charred, burnt meat, ashy tobacco, overripe cherries and raisin, plus chocolate and alcohol. Pretty complex. Semi thin mouthfeel. Good stout.

I am so glad I had the change to try this - cheers to xraided81 for the trade.

The color is deep brown bordering on black with a thin tan head with fine bead. The smell is rich with malt that has a toffee-like sweet aroma with slight roast odor and mild alcohol. The feel is smooth for the strength, viscous body with full malt and moderate sweetness with some roasted texture mid palate and finish is semi-dry.

The taste is great, very full with malt that is both roast and caramelized sugar in taste with some toffee-like flavors and chocolate malt character and alcohol is well hidden in the layers of sweet yet slightly fruit oriented with some gentle dried fruit sweetness. This is a great stout so glad we enjoyed this at our Annual Birthday Stout gathering!

Just bought a bomber for 12.99.
Look is black with dark brown lacing on edges. It did not pour thick and oily looking. It had a finger lace that
quickly dissipates.
Smell is strong dark chocolate, coffee, and bourbon.
The taste is dark chocolate up front with some coffee and bourbon on the back end. It sweetens as it warms.
The feel is rather thin and watery. I thought at 12% this would be a thick chewy stout.
Overall, I thought this stout was good, but there are better Bourbon Barrel Aged Stouts out the for the same price
and lower abv's.

mine is from the original release back in 2014, been sitting in the way-back part of the frig behind the ever-revolving fresh IPAs..... roasty on the nose, very thin on the tongue, lots of roasty, chocolate-y flavors.... not much coffee on this but in the distant background..... very easy to drink, still slightly boozy at the 12%.

Appearance: A thick, beige head builds above the fudge brown liquid, viscous and leggy, leaving a dribbling of lacing down the side of the chalice

Smell: Chocolate, well-toasted bread and coffee, with a hint of piney hops

Taste: Chocolate forward, blending with a hint of smoke from the well-toasted bread; piney hop flavors build, through the middle, with some coffee in the finish

Mouthfeel: Full bodied and very creamy, with moderate carbonation

Overall: A rather straightforward imperial stout here, but love the mouthfeel

Current year vintage poured from bomber bottle into stout glasses on February 14. I found it less cantankerous and more hulking. It is a BIG stout, but reasonably well-balanced, ABV present but not overpowering. Little carbonation, lots of coffee, cocoa, and roasted malt flavors. Very good.

Bomber poured into a snifter.

3.5 A: Black color. Not quite one finger of frothy light brown head. Retention is poor but it's what you'd expect from a beer so big. A couple small wisps of lacing are left.

3.5 S: The nose on this is surprisingly mild, which I wasn't expecting based on the general consensus. Roasted barley, boozy astringency are most apparent. Dark chocolate, caramel, molasses, coffee, and toastiness follow. It's reasonably complex, but it's subtle complexity rather than big, in your face aromas that many stouts offer.

3.5 T: Like the nose, the taste has a sharp booziness like I was sipping on bourbon or something. The flavors mirror what is listed in the nose. It's a touch muddled without a focal flavor. It has a dry boozy finish.

3.5 M: Heavier medium to heavy body. Good moderate carbonation. Just a minor creaminess. Booziness lasts throughout finish and well into aftertaste.

3.25 D: Not really impressed with this. It's a booze bomb without a lot of strong malty flavors.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: AleSmith Barrel-Aged Reserve snifter glass
From: Barons Market in Alpine, Calif.
Price: $12.99
Purchased: Jan. 5, 2016
Consumed: Jan. 8, 2016
Misc.: N/A

Poured a pitch black color with 1-to-2 fingers of fizzy tan head. Average-to-below average spots of lacing on the sides of the glass. Below average retention. (Sight - 3.75)

Smelled dark cocoa, Mexican chocolate, black roasted coffee malts, faint cinnamon spices, vanilla, dark fruits, cherry wood, brown sugar and faint molasses. (Smell - 4.00)

Taste followed the nose, but not sure it was quite as good. Got rich, dark cocoa, black coffee, boozy brown sugar, molasses, light char wood, some smoky fire, thick caramel, roasted toffee malts, dark fruit notes, dark cherry wood and some cinnamon and other wintry spices late. The 12 percent ABV was well hidden. (Taste - 4.25)

Full body. Sticky-to-slick texture. Average carbonation. Long finish. (Feel - 4.00)

For some reason didn’t have high hopes with this one, but I enjoyed it overall. Excited to get to try the variants. (Overall - 4.00)

Bottle into a tulip glass. Pours nearly midnight black with a finger of medium density brown head. Nose was mute, couldn't distinctly pick out much other than chocolate. Taste was mostly cocoa and cherries, a bit sweet for me. Mouthfeel was good, carbonation solid, with a bit of a tart finish. I'd buy again.

A: Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, malt, caramel
T: Also deep semi sweet chocolate. Vanilla, slight cherry, malty.
M: Textured. Semi sweet, thick, good balance, medium to heavy, slightly bitter.
O: This is a decent enough IS, but far from my favorite.

Poured from the bottle into a Spiegelau Stout glass.

Deep opaque nearly black walnut body, with a billowing cream like espresso brown head. Three fingers tall good retention and creamy topped Puck.

Interesting aroma. Soft grain notes, vanilla and big chewy malt depth. chewy sensing almost thick wheat and molasses.

Palate really sings. Chewy and velvet grains and dark chocolate flavors. Soft cocoa powder and even a coffee like fruitiness in the mid palate. Finishes rich and with creamy flavors of thick milk and well.. cream. Touches a breakfast cereal warmth of chocolate and oatmeal chunky flavors that is very inviting.

Delicious imperial, another excellent beer from these guys!

Appearance - Pours near black with cola brown edging. Cocoa powder colored head that might peak at a half pinkie's width before dying quickly to reveal a near barren surface. Lacing? Not on this hefty fella.

Smell - Chocolate and light roast with underlying anise character and lighter raisin or fig.

Taste - Follows the nose. Chocolatey flavor is predominant, then notes of raisin and anise come into play. Light roast bite hits mid-taste, adding a bit of mocha flavor. Light char gives a slightly smokey flavor to the finish. There's a touch of heat in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Full in body with low carbonation. Thick, sticky and syrupy texture, comparable to a belgian quad. The finish comes with the dryness of booze.

Overall - This is a good, solid Impy stout. Smooth at first, then turns more aggressive as it begins to warm. I'd recommend this impy, particularly to anyone looking for one with moderate anise character, as those aren't always easy to come by.
