Notes: Booming Rollers is a showcase for the juicy awesomeness of Citra hops. These new wave American hops impart a remarkable aroma and flavor, which we've amplified with the dark stone fruit character of New Zealand-grown Motueka hops. Some Centennial is thrown in to balance the tropical fruit party, and the malt body is just assertive enough to support Booming Rollers' snappy bitterness. It's a party in your mouth and all the beautiful people are invited.

16 oz can dated 3/11/2019, just over a month old

Hops: Citra, Motueka, Centennial

I had this beer a few years ago and it I think they reformulated it a bit, looks much lighter and clearer now. MT nails it. This isn't a NE juicebomb, it's a clean west coast IPA crusher.

Appearance: Pours a Goldish yellow color, straight shiny gold. White frothy head that has some staying power but not too much. The beer has a classic CA clarity to it. BY the book the IPA looks solid as hell. woa... Pouring the rest of the beer pours in the remaining yeast and hop proteins and the beer becomes considerably cloudy and hazy.

Aroma: freaking amazing. fruit bouquet. orange juice, tangerine juice, white grapefruit and red grapefruit juice. I smell something else as it warms. Not sure if it is the yeast or the malts but it smells incredible. Not sure what it is but its has some kind of candy / bubble gum characteristics. banana pudding or apple cider? i dunno. but i dig it.

Taste: This fucking thing tastes like a trillium or tree house IPA (maybe toned down just a bit in terms of explosive juicy flavors) but I'm not kidding, its a bit different this year and its has tropical fruit sweetness, not malty alcohol sweetness. Anyhow, this thing is incredible. It's so depressing how this isn't available year round. I wish this was available every other month at least. Fucking pineapple after-taste and dried mango all over the taste buds.

Mouthfeel: semi creamy, medium full body goodness. silky hop juice with the most on point carbonation. smooth yo. great tingly balance.

Overall: I am loving this damn IPA. I think the ABV is perfect and it's just a damn tasty IPA. Reminds me of so many beers from so many parts of the country. It's a lovable beverage for sure.

I don't normally write reviews and I never write bad reviews, but i feel like i have to speak out for this one. Modern Times has produced amazing beer for every batch of their core beers and special release beers I have encountered... except for the Booming Rollers cans dated 2.20.15. All I tasted is butterscotch and Buttered Popcorn with some slight bitterness. Anyone who knows better... DIACETYL. So I'm writing this to let you all know if you get a can of Booming Rollers and its dated 2.20.15 and it tastes bad, well you aren't the only one.

The only reason I'm NOT giving this a 0/5 is because I had previous batches (on tap and in can) that were at least a 4/5. The diacetyl in the 2.20 batch of cans i got were enough to give a 0/5; which i don't think is harsh at all considering how on point all of their core and special release beers are.

Canned on 3/20/15. Poured into a tulip glass.

L - An aggressive pour yields two fingers of sticky eggshell foam. Nice lacing clings to the glass for the duration. The head settles to a frothy cap atop the beer. Color is a not-so-clear deep gold, with noticeable hop particles floating throughout.

S - Aroma pops with massive notes of juicy, ripe tropical fruits. Mango, papaya, kiwi, stone fruits, and citrus. Clean ale yeast against a base of slightly sweet, crackerish malts. A good swirl yields notes of lemon candy and mild alcohol phenols. As the beer warms to room temp, a prominent apricot aroma surfaces.

T - Waves of the delicious tropical fruit, stone fruit, and citrus notes that the aroma promised blanket the palate, quickly giving way to a pithy citrus rind bitterness. The malt backbone provides just enough balance with some sweetish cracker-like flavors. Finishes nicely dry.

F - Slightly oily, slick, and medium-bodied. Perfect level of carbonation that doesn't augment the hop bitterness.

O - A wonderful IPA bursting with delicious bitterness and bright notes of fresh fruits. Seek this out.

Really nice nose and quality taste from the hops. It was very drinkable but did not have as much happiness as usual IPAs.

Nice enough look, cloudy amber with a decent head. Decent aroma of fruity hops with a strong malt-honey sweetness. Mild hop taste, but mostly a malt-bomb, with a slightly stale aftertaste. Too heavy in the mouthfeel. Not very good, but I suspect the can was a bit past its prime.

Delirious aroma of passion fruit. I see this has Citra hops, which seems to be the hop it has in common with Fortunate Islands, also with that passion fruit taste. Bright and spritzy.

What a delightful beer, I forget it's an IPA! The bitterness just seems to enhance the crisp, refreshing quality, rather than drag you down with a harpoon line wrapped around your peg leg. Lightly but tastily malted with just enough body. Wonderful aromatics, and then the flavor flares up with fermented pineapple and a sweet yet tangy taste.

For a place not generally known for IPAs, Modern Times proves they can make an excellent version of most any style. The exalted beings at Alpine should taste this. From the 16 oz can purchased at Barons Market on West Point Loma.

My 100 review for this style!! Pour from can dated 2/17 with a one finger white head, ok lacing. A solid citra IPA in the aroma and taste. Mouthfeel was sticky to the tongue. I must have again!

16oz can dated 2/18/16 into a Duvel tulip at fridge temp.

Look: slightly hazy, light honey in color, thin head that dissipates completely after ~1min.

Smell: admittedly not the best glassware for aroma; basically lemon candy, with something like papaya or watermelon in the background.

Taste: almost astringent citrus up front, but good balance of bitter and mild sweetness after, with a layer of unusual notes—tobacco, cedar—making this more interesting.

Feel: light-to-medium body, nice amount of carbonation, slightly dry.

Overall: a very good beer that doesn't quite live up to the expectations I'd built up for it, and certainly doesn't compete with its Citra-based cousin from KRBC. Still glad to have had it, and would purchase again.

Beautiful light gold pour with a nose of blended tropical fruits. Juicy, then bitter and then sweet (but not syrupy sweet) with a dank finish. Outstanding!

Pint-sized can - Canned on 04/19/18:

Pours cloudy (somewhat murky) golden with a thin white head that descends to a thin, wispy large island. Dots of lacing stick.

The smell is of huge, robust citrus - fresh squeezed grapefruit with orange and lemon. It blends with tropical fruit (especially mango).

The taste of bitter grapefruit hits the palate first. Citrus (bitter grapefruit, tart lemon, juicy sweet orange) combines with tropical fruit/mango (hint of pineapple?) to give it a strong fruity character. A kiss of biscuity malt gives it balance to add sweetness to the hop bitterness. Just the right amount of support the hops need to keep the complex fruit tastes forward. The alcohol is well-covered. It has a long, fruity finish.

It is juicy and smooth despite a bit of a bite. A bit of a light spritz on the palate. A pleasant fruity aftertaste lingers.

An exceptionally good, fruity hop-forward West Coast IPA! A "hop-head" delight!

(I will be looking out for a fresher one of these in the spring when it is re-released as this was about six months old - seemed very fresh to me though. I will return to make comments if I find any noticeable differences with a fresher can - or on-tap).

Highly recommended.
