Proof positive that bourbon barrels don't make everything better, I much prefer Black House to this beer. The barrel aged beans somehow contribute a high pitched astringency, sharp wafts of black marker and burnt matches, and a palate almost cloying in chocolatey sweetness, more black marker/black licorice/and weird phenols.

This is a very confusing beer. It has the look and scent of and BA Imperial stout, but the taste is very smooth with a hint of booziness associated with a BA stout. Mouth feel is the same as Black House, light and crisp. This is a very solid brew.

Nice looking beer - black with a dark brown head and good retention. The aroma is of vanilla, burnt oak, and burnt coffee with a smoky note. The spirit character is strange - somewhat sharp and harsh with an almost sour flair. The flavor is acrid burnt coffee and astringent oak with some chocolate and vanilla. Again, the spirit character and oak are unpleasant, though the chocolate and vanilla provide some respite from the acrid coffee. I could do without ever having barrel aged coffee in any form again.

Imagine Black House...now with bourbon aged coffee beans...Viola! The subtleness of the bourbon BEHIND the coffee is one of a kind. Absolutely delicious, and so smooth. Yet another example of why MT is simply killing it lately with their current offerings. Cheers!

22oz bottle, no date. Pours brownish black with a larger sized dense light khaki head. Smells of roasted malt, coffee, nuts, bourbon, vanilla, and cocoa. The taste follows exactly with mostly roasted malt, coffee, nuts with some bourbon, vanilla, and cocoa. Light bitterness and dryness. Below average body and higher carbonation for the style. Overall, it's unique they use BA'd coffee, but not much barrel character comes though in the smell/taste. Drinkable and pleasant, but not a heavy hitter.

It pours a dark black and has a rich, sweet smell. It tastes like extremely dark chocolate with a strong hint of raspberry and currants, and it is a rather bubbly beer with a pleasant carbonation that makes this not all that thick compared to many stouts. Toward the end of the 22 oz bottle it became a little musty and strong, but only a little; this is a very good beer.

Sampled at CBC 2016 - day 2. Roasted malts, quite a bit of coffee, chocolate, molasses.

Bomber bottled 8/17/17 into pub glass.

Tall finger of beige head on top of an opaque black body. This brew looks excellent.
The aroma was sort of a let down - just standard roasty munich, two-row, and dark chocolate malts with hints of roasty coffee - not much more. I think I got to this beer a bit too late having aged just over the 3 month mark.
Flavor is pretty enjoyable and despite the lack of any bourbon character from the coffee beans. I still got lots of coffee character with generous syrupy chocolate and little hints of sweetness. Pretty chewy and medium carbonation, well-balanced mouthfeel.

Too bad I didn't get the bourbon character at all but the coffee and chocolate notes were still there. Next time I/ll try a fresher bottle.

Shared bomber bottle.
Nice red-brown body with tan head.
Rich, complex flavor.
Some hints of dates, sherry, dried cherries and oak.
Very full body.
