Protocosmos combines the crazy, fruity awesomeness of Australian Galaxy hops with the bright, citrusy qualities of American Ahtanum & Centennial hops. The dry, cracker-like malt body is super-saturated with hop flavor & aroma, allowing you to revel in the diggity dankness of these absurdly expensive hops without any sweetness to harsh your mellow.

Protocosmos is named after an insane underground world described by Casanova (yup, that one) featuring multi-colored humanoids, strangely small flying horses, and fruit-eating serpents.

Had on tap. Dank beer, let's get that right. Fruit elements include pineapple, orange, and lemon. Good west coast hop bitterness on the finish with bland pine. Nose gets some floral action as well. Overall though, I am left wanting something more. It is a good ipa, but instead of the poorly hidden booze or cracker like malt, why not give a punch of sweet or savory to accent the hops? Pretty good, but could be all time good

19.2oz can from Brewers Haven. Pale golden, light haze, fluffy head. Aroma is faint citrus. Taste is built on some bready, cracker malts with the hops adding a thin layer of citrus and a mellow bitter bite. Very subdued, highly drinkable.

Hazy gold with 4 fingers of white head.

Smells hoppy, dank and of tropical fruit, but not over the top.

The taste follows the nose and leaves a mild sense of grapefruit pith lingering.

Medium to light, frothy body with lots of carbonation.

Enjoying in Redding, Nov 30th, 2020.

Disclosure: I am no connoisseur. I seem to have lost my taste for IPA, especially those that have no nose. 16 oz can. The taste is metallic, there is no smell, it is over carbonated so lots of belches all around, the mouth feel is Pellegrino. It looks like highly carbonated pilsner. Don't like it so much that I may not finish it... the last time I didn't finish a beer was an over-banana-estered wheat beer. I"ve read the reviews and cannot connect most of them with my experience. May be the can.

Can from Trader Joes.
Pretty good and dank IPA. Good flavors but they don't jump out at you. Modern Times is a good brewery but go for their hazy IPAs, those are their forte right now.

Packaged on 1/2/2020, consumed on 3/11/2020 - poured from a stovepipe into my Bruery tulip.

Not quite clear amber body capped by a fist of seashell foam; thick pearling lacing, excellent retention.

Lemon, grapefruit, and faint passion-fruit and marijuana in the nose - very citrus-forward, though lacking orange/tangerine notes. Curious if the Galaxy was contributing more when this was fresher?

Lemon-drops, forest floor, and peaches (or maybe mango if you think "tropical") on the palate - an interesting combination. Fairly linear, with a crisp, not-quite-biscuity/not-quite-crackery finish. Moderate bitterness throughout, despite listing 90 IBU, the focus remains on flavor rather than bitterness.

Medium-light bodied, moderately refreshing, with medium-carbonation (slightly soft perhaps).

Very good West Coast IPA with a unique combination of hops - just wish I had a super fresh can - will revisit if I have the opportunity!

Canned on 01/02/20. 19.2 oz. can. Enjoyed 02/12/20. This is my second time enjoying this. I have to say, this is Modern Times best IPA yet, and I've enjoyed quite a few of them. The color is a nice, pale gold. Decent head. The fruity, hoppy aroma is enjoyable, though not as pronounced as others I've enjoyed. It's the taste, though, that stands out. It's a pleasant blend of citrus, pine and hops. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side (a bit of a surprise), and a pleasant aftertaste. A thoroughly enjoyable brew that I strongly recommend. If you've not enjoyed one, try to find. You'll be glad you did.

(Nov 2016, 22oz, Long Beach) Very light in color with a pretty obvious potlike aroma. Pretty dry without much maltiness. Becomes a bit one dimensional pretty quickly. Decent effort, 2.9

On tap at Homestyle Hawaiian. Got a bad pour with no head at all, but swirling later produced some reasonable cream foam, so I can't really dock them here. Color was a watery gold, mostly clear. Nose was a bit light, but had bright citrus and a slight dankness. Taste was crisp and clean, with mostly a tangerine citrus hop influence. Nicely rounded bitterness with a cracker malt backing. A solid all-round IPA that isn't setting pushing boundaries.
