Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Protocosmos combines the crazy, fruity awesomeness of Australian Galaxy hops with the bright, citrusy qualities of American Ahtanum & Centennial hops. The dry, cracker-like malt body is super-saturated with hop flavor & aroma, allowing you to revel in the diggity dankness of these absurdly expensive hops without any sweetness to harsh your mellow.

Protocosmos is named after an insane underground world described by Casanova (yup, that one) featuring multi-colored humanoids, strangely small flying horses, and fruit-eating serpents.

Appearance: Bright, slightly cloudy golden straw yellow. Very nice white head retention and lacing. A sudsy head, that sticks around and asks you about your day. Better lacing than head retention on this one.

Nose: Pineapple, banana, kiwi, guava. Fresh and tropical, with a backbone of citrus. Yellow cake mix.

Taste: Perfect mouthfeel with loads of tropical fruits up front. Citrus and light malt come in through the middle with a slightly dry, cracker, and tiny medicinal finish.

22oz bottle with my FW Imperial Nonic glass
Notes taken on 03/07/2015

A: Lightly burnished golden straw colored body with some pretty brilliant clarity. Lively bubbles that develop a thickly condensed pillow of ivory white foam head. Good hang time to this one and a ton of sticky webbed lacing that decorates the glass after every sip.

S: Bright and aromatic with green melon, passion fruit, guava, mango, florals, and grapefruit. Loads of juicy tropicals here with a backing of some sugary pale malts that only seem to accentuate the hops. Getting some faint herbal spices as well. Smells like quite the delight.

T: Great Galaxy forward flavors with some herbals and spice backing up to it. I get predominant passionfruit notes with some complimentary melon flesh, unripe berry, mango, guava, and grapefruit. The malt provides some real restrained grainy character that keeps the hops rolling along nicely. Smooth with only a moderate amount of perceived bitterness and the alcohol kept well in check throughout. Crisp and flavorful.

M: Light and frothy body with a nice carbonated texture. Moderate amount of constricting bitterness leading up to a very dry and crisp finish. Pretty clean overall and not all that resinous.

D: Super crush! Maybe one of the best Galaxy hopped IPA’s I have had yet. A little straight forward in that regard but really well done. Seems that the MT hoppy brews just keep getting better and better. Protocosmos being at the top of my list now.

I would probably rate this higher if I hadn't had Booming Rollers last night. Still, it's like Modern Times decided that after they made a name for themselves they'd proceed to blow away the San Diego IPA market. Hops are Galaxy, Ahtanum, and Centennial with the emphasis on the aromatics.

Sudsy and luscious in the mouth with plenty of carbonation. Streaming bubbles and a fine-grained white foam on the golden brew. Flowery nose when you raise the glass to sip, and then the pear and citrus, some cherimoya with a little cedar. Slightly hot and acidic, but it just emphasizes the flavors.

So tangy and fruity at the same time. Maybe we're living in a new age of IPAs. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Park Blvd Foods in University Heights.

just kind of plain-looking, not much carbonation but for the residual stout from the previous beer mingling with the newly poured ingredients. smells is very nice- tropical fruit, sweet... and the flavor resonates with the same. as someone else said, I get the mango-pineapple combination with the back of slight bitterness. still trying to separate the tropical sweetness of the beer and the lube I was using on my girlfriend which has stuck to my hands. but a very decent brew regardless. still MT-sweet like most of their other IPAs but as gaggingly so. a lot easier than their Booming Rollers, for sure; and I only reference that because I believe it is part of this series of releases. overall, very decent, although I probably could not drink two of these in succession.

Beautiful beer: light golden straw color, perfectly clear (could pass easily for an AAL), topped with a nice solid snow white head. Fantastic retention and tons of lacing.

Sweet hoppy aroma; galaxy hops dominate. Tropical and citrus fruit (particularly stone fruit and lemon), a touch of honey, an underlying dank herbal note, and a touch of pepper. The malt profile doesn't go unnoticed, either, with some pale biscuit, bread, and honey riding clean.

The taste is phenomenally smooth and balanced. Sweet (but not overmuch), hoppy (ditto), malty. Unreal balance. Hops manifest as a little bit of lemon up front, and resin and herbs on the back end. More of the flavor is carried by the malt as sweet, chewy grains.

Extremely smooth mouthfeel; medium-light body with a soft slickness. Tons of bitterness that doesn't at all come across as harsh or biting. Long sticky finish - surprisingly wet - with a bit of bitter effervescence. Very tough to notice the finish, honestly, as each sip begs for another!

This is a very, very impressive and smooth IPA; I'm honestly a little stunned at how seamlessly the whole thing comes together.

Big pineapple nose that was really quite nice, but the middle and finish got soapy and astringent. Common issue with some of these new wave IPAs. Good idea, good start, middling execution.
