Devil’s Teeth is a hybrid of an Old Ale and an Imperial Stout, two English beer styles designed to withstand long voyages and dark winters. It brings rich maltiness & robust roastiness in a thick, tongue-coating, aggressively flavorful package. To this chewy mix of old world beasts, we brought a massive dose of our house roasted Black House Blend coffee, a complimentary mix of blueberry-forward Ethiopian and chocolate-forward Sumatran coffees.

- 2015 vintage
- 22oz. bottle poured into stemless wine glass on 8-Jan-16

This is definitely more imperial coffee stout than an old ale. Deep, rich espresso roast that bitters my tongue for a solid minute after the sip. Dark chocolate abounds. I tried searching through the intense coffee notes for the old ale presence and I believe it adds that caramel, almost grape-wine-like notes. Creamy texture, and did I mention the bitterness? Bit of heat coming through as well in the finish. Overall, enjoyed it and something tells me it gets better with age.

Dark appearance with slight tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is a slightly sweet malt. Taste is also a slightly sweet malt without any alcohol taste.

A 22 fl. oz. bomber with no clear bottled on or best before date. Poured into a snifter glass.

Appearance: Dark brown in colour with a nice one fingered tanned head that had decent retention and eventually settled to a ring around the glass while leaving only sparse spotty lacing.

Aroma: Sweet dessert like, chocolate, brown sugar, dark fruit, molasses and coffee.

Taste: Lightly bitter coffee bean, sweet chocolate, roasty coffee, nearly burnt caramel with hints of dark fruit.

Mouthfeel: Creamy, medium bodied with low to moderate carbonation and light booze.

Overall: A self described hybrid Old Ale and Imperial Stout. At first I thought, definitely Imperial Stout, but the more I drank and as it warmed, it grew into an enjoyable Old Ale with its nice chocolate, caramel and dark fruit.

Modern Times understands coffee. They roast their own and have a wonderful barrel-aged coffee program, so it's no surprise that they do a great job of matching an appropriate coffee blend to accompany their beers. In this case, the task is made even more difficult given that the beer is a blend of an old ale with an imperial stout.

As such, this is not one of those beers that is purely a vehicle for highlighting a particular bean, like Double Shot or Big Bad Baptist. Instead, it's a harmonious and skillful matrimony of complementary flavors. The coffee is indeed the highlight of the nose, indicating dark, roasted bitterness and baker's chocolate, along with a deep, earthy nuttiness and tobacco; the Sumatran mandheling is winning out on the nose over the Ethiopian beans, which wait until hitting the tongue to bring out some sweeter balance. The old ale also provides a nice counterpoint to the stout in the flavor profile, adding more malt as well as some fruity notes of currant and plum. The thick, full mouthfeel produces a long, complex finish that evolves as the beer warms.

Not as bursting with giant flavors as some of the high-ABV, barrel-aged Monster's Park variants that put Modern Times on the map, but a skillfully executed, complex beer at a much more favorable price point. Well done.

Poured from the bottle into a large snifter glass. Not sure why this review of mine seems to be misplaced?

Deep and big creamy slightly tall two finger thick and light tan head. Mixes of white and milkshake light top appearance, with thin bubbles. Body color is a big walnut brown, with red clarity. Settles to big thick collar, weeping thick leopard lace and an aggressive appearance.

That aroma hits wonderfully. Soft liquid and almost like a fudge coffee texture on the nose. Thick and decadent. Fruity hinting ester like quality hiding behind this coffee which makes a wonderful combination. Fruity angles continue with a mixing chocolate darkness as well. Just really interesting and inviting.

Palate just drives the right balance and perfectly flavors. Toffee hinting and almost pick your teeth stick aromas in the mid palate come on first sip. Dripping dark chocolate with mild bitterness and thick coffee notes. Mild piping roast aroma with a large vanilla thickness on the finish Flavors meld front to back so perfectly with excellent balance from sweetness, toffee, chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Gigantic body but wonderfully in control without thick syrup or boozy qualities.

And excellent meld just really pushing and hitting all the right buttons. I could drink this all night long.
