A draft-only double IPA brewed with Manderina Bacaria, Mosaic, Motueka, Galaxy, & Experimental Hop 07270. Massive tropical fruit aroma & flavor, firmly bitter but alarmingly drinkable.

July 17th, 2015 - Modern Times does some magic with hop cones, and this beer puts its namesake in my throats - Hooloomooloo. Enjoyed at the brewery, it has a sharp hoppy and bitter scent, both resinous and sweet. A little bubble gum and pine build up the aroma, adding body and complexity. The flavor is even better, bold with bazooka joe (old fashioned) bubble gum, which lets the hops dance. The aroma enjoys a huge, fresh pine scent, but it's thinned as if wafting in cool mountain air. A stellar effect!

Clear amber with a finger of off white head.

Caramel malts and mild fruit, like blueberry. A bit perfumey as well, but not quite tropical like it promotes itself as. Hops are present yes, but as it warms big caramel, toffee and even buttery aromas take over.

Caramel and toffee are the main components. At first seems a little sweet, but some pine bitterness, and a peppery bite bump their way in.

A - first pour is exceptionally clear pale gold. second pour is cloudier giving it a more rusty golden color with some bright straw yellow highlights. thin and fizzy pearly white head on top which dissipates quickly to a medium thick ring around the rim.

S - a melange of massive hop character assaults the nose. notes of syrupy pineapple juice, maraschino cherry, under ripe cantaloupe, lemon pulp, with hints of mango and guava. some slight herbal notes, with some sappy pine resin, and musky dankness. just a touch of grassy grainy character to round it out.

T - grainy flavors up front. followed by a swell of alcohol warmth and sweetness. firm rindy bitterness strikes midpalate along with some juicy orange pulp which follows along to the back and carries further into along bitter and boozey finish.

M - the body is medium with some watery edges and an oily texture. carbonation is medium low to lower.

O - often time i find these kitchen sink IPAs to lack focus and structure. the problem i found with this particular beer is that the alcohol character is too much a focal point and not enough tropcial hop character. no faults are too be found in this other than its lack of balance, otherwise it was an interesting drink.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: Beer Nerd tulip glass
From: Barons Market in Alpine, Calif.
Price: $9.99
Purchased: April 4, 2016
Consumed: April 5, 2016
Misc.: No BOD on bottle

Had this once on tap as a 7-oz. taster at the Point Loma location, giving it a 4.00 on July 15, 2015. The bottle reads “Hoppy Tropical Double IPA.” Not usually high on the Modern Times’ IPAs, but reviewed a good one last night (Orderville) and this one could be better.

Poured a golden, pale, clear color with three fingers of white, frothy head. A few bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Below average lacing on the sides of the glass. Below average retention. (Sight - 3.75)

Smell wasn’t as good as I hoped it would be, getting garbage, spoiled fruit, Galaxy, tropical notes, skunky Mosaic and some unknown New Zealand-like hops. (Smell - 3.25)

Taste was slightly better, getting Galaxy, spoiled fruit, tropical hops, bitter earthy grapefruit rind, some Mosaic, cantaloupe, mango, vegetables (onion/garlic I think) and that unknown New Zealand hop. No way this is 10 percent alcohol. Impressively hidden. (Taste - 3.50)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Bitter, abrupt finish. (Feel - 3.50)

Not a big fan of this one. Missing something that might have made it a decent IIPA. Orderville was better, which I would’ve never bet when I purchased both yesterday. (Overall - 3.50)

Pours a mostly clear deep yellow gold. Nose is subdued. I get mostly resin and pine. A little rye. Not much in the way of tropical scents. Taste is similar. It lacks something. Feel is nice. Overall, a decent DIPA. Not bad but not great. I just don't think the unspecified array of hops pays off on this one.
