Bottle thanks to Rick. Dark black, flat pour. Aroma is nutty, sweet, candy bar. Smooth and slick. Some maple flavors, pancakes. Nice with a bit of a sting.

Poured into a snifter. Dark brown color with a thick tan head. Nice retention for a BA beer. Rich and complex aromas of vanilla, almonds, milk chocolate, and caramel. The taste was much like the aroma: a malty beginning with escalating chocolate notes followed by a strong vanilla and almond finish. The almond really hung out on the finish in a nice way. Lighter bodied that was in line with the hybrid base beer. Not boozy for an 11% beer. Outstanding.

this is an absurdly delicious beer. a like the idea of it being a hybrid between an old ale and an imperial stout, and it does have a far more nuanced malt complexion than either style would on its own, combining the best of both worlds it seems, a nice roast but also a rich barleywine sort of sweet and fruity aspect too. the interesting thing here though, is that for all of the elements in play and all the intense and delicious flavors swirling around in this, my main takeaway is that i love what nuts can do in beer, especially dark strong beer, and this might be one of the best uses of almonds i have seen in a beer. their impact is of course subtle compared to the likes of the whiskey barrels or the vanilla, both of which are really prominent all the way through, but the soft fleshy earthy sweet almonds provide a really cool wrinkle to this to the extent that the beer would now seem incomplete without them. they soften the mouthfeel too, and while i can taste the alcohol, i cant feel it, if that makes sense, the nuts seem to absorb the harsher aspects of it, really cool. the cocoa is awesome here too, fudgy and sweet and bitter at the same time. lots of oak and char and whiskey too, amazing depth of flavor, naturalness of the additives, and a very cohesive whole. i feel lucky to have had this one shared with me. modern times continues to impress me with each and every beer...

Sample at Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen 2017, red session. Aroma has dark malt, quite roasty with some cacao notes. Taste is on the sweet side with bourbon, butterscotch, toffee and spiced brownies.

650ml bottle. Served in a snifter glass. Pours a dark, opaque brown body, one finger offwhite head, short retention and no lacing. I guess old ales tend to look fairly bland in this manner. Smell is rich almond milk, caramel, heavy toffee, touch of marshmallow. The old ale base is heavy here; with bourbon contributing a light smoke and some sweetness to the aroma. Flavour is equally heavy on the old ale; sweet caramel, moderate oak presence, a bit of smoke, toffee, a touch of butterscotch and molasses. The adjuncts arrive at appropriate times between the sweet caramel and the barrel notes; the almond and vanilla are in equal proportions and provide a nice almond milk flavour in the middle and lingering on the backend. The cocoa provides a bit more bitterness to go along with the base old ale. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, good carbonation, perhaps a little undercarbonated actually, and a nice one to share. The alcohol is fairly present. Overall, an interesting barrel aged old ale with nice use of adjuncts that don't overwhelm the beer, but aren't muted either.

Black in color but clear brown on the edges. A nice head that settles to a mini ring. Nice lacing on a swirl.

Nose is strong sweet vanilla, cocoa, and minor almonds.

Taste is bourbon up front, vanilla, minor almonds, Minor booze, and a unsweetened cocoa / oaky finish.

Mouthful is medium, even, and soft. Carbonation is medium. Finish is semi sweet.

Modern Times is really doing well on their small batch releases. This does not disappoint. The vanilla and cocoa are very much present as is the bourbon barrel. The nose is superb, the taste and mouthful great. About the only drawback I can say is the nose does not match the mouth. Put that note to the side and enjoy this beer.

overall, an amazing beer. but only issue is that it is not worth the $30 price tag.

Drinking this beer cold from the tap, I was underwhelmed and pissed I spent $30 on a bottle. I pushed it to the side and 20 mins later, the flavor popped!! The vanilla begins to dominate with a velvet smooth stout and nuts danced around in the back. Couldn't believe the flavor change and happy I decided to re-visit this fella.

On tap at Modern Times Fermentorium on 10/21/16.

Pours near black with a thin khaki head that disappears completely and leaves spots of lace. The smell is of milk chocolate and vanilla. The taste follows with strong vanilla, milk chocolate, subtle nuttiness and some faint bourbon accents. Rich, thick texture.

I've been holding this brew for about 6 months and finally decided to give it a go.
Poured into my trusty Stone tulip glass.
Look: Black with persistent tan head & lacing.
Smell: Faint cocoa that begins to increase along with nutty essences as it warms.
Taste: Wow! Right from the refrigerator into my glass, the first sip is milk chocolate. As the beer warms, the milk chocolate is joined by cocoa, bourbon, vanilla and the almonds. Fantastic!
Feel: Medium carbonation and mouthfeel.
Overall: A great stout that tastes like a boozy chocolate/almond milkshake. Great job Modern Times!

Pitch black pour with a decent amount of light khaki head. Not much going on in the smell. The taste is great. Liquid chocolate with a nice vanilla finish. Really loving the flavors coming from this. My only gripe with this beer is that it's slightly thin for me. I like my stouts to have more body to them.

Great beer with a ton of awesome flavors. This beer delivers
