Pours an effervescent, scarlet-hued mahogany with a thumb of tan head. Above average head retention & great lacing

S: Coffee, vanilla, fades a bit as this warms

T: Follows the nose, dryness, and little caramel, plus a smidge of chicory up front Rye pepperyness comes through as this warms along with mocha, a little dryness too. Finishes with a little woody with mocha sweetness & a little Chicory bitterness

MF: Medium body, creamy carbonation

A very noice Porter, well worth a go

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque in the glass with a thin brown head that dissipates to patches with light lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, coffee, cocoa; chicory is detectable only because I was expecting it. Flavor is dark toasted malt with a light char, coffee, chicory, milk chocolate and a very light rye tartness. Finishes with nice lingering dark malt, coffee and a light toffee note. Medium bodied with light creaminess and good mouth feel. A very pleasant, full bodied porter that shows off all of its ingredients in fine balance. The malt is solid and interesting on its own, chicory adds a little grainy earthiness and there is pleasant chocolate and coffee throughout. The rye is deftly done, giving a little flavor and very slight tartness, which is excactly the amount I would hope for. Really nicely done.

Bottled 10/20/2016 - poured from a 22oz bomber into my 10oz nonic.

Nearly opaque seal brown body, clear with faint ruby highlights and a lasting finger of Isabelline foam up top. Creamy, dense lacing; superior retention.

Deep malty nose riding the edge between toast and roast, with hints of chocolate, brown bread, faint tobacco, with hints of cedar and pepper from the hops.

Rich flavor is an intensification of the aroma, with chocolate, coffee, and a layered malt profile leading from an initial sweetness into an almost tangy/bitter-sweet, well-attenuated finish with rye and the clean/herbal Northern Brewer hops working with excellent synergy. Some vague licorice notes emerge as the beer warms, but this remains a porter rather than a stout.

Silky medium-light mouthfeel with gentle but persistent carbonation.

Very good dark porter with enough rye and wheat to add a spicy complexity to the base malt.

On the side of the bottle: "BOTTLED ON 10/18/16 1056491"
It was purchased as a new beer on the shelf this year, so I don't know where it was aged.

Appearance: The body is black and the head is a light khaki color. The head is short and creamy textured with a few large bubbles across its surface. It slowly fades to a thick ring. No retention or lacing.

Aroma: It has a nice coffee and cocoa powder aroma.

Taste: It has a light black licorice flavor with hints of dark chocolate and burnt sugar. The more the beer is consumed the more it starts to deliver a bit of cinnamon flavor which is nice. There is a touch of woody pine that also lingers with a burnt flavor and tends to be the biggest flavor contributor.

Mouthfeel: It has a nice smooth mouthfeel that coats the whole palate. It has a bitter bite that cuts back on some of the sweetness and lingers on the palate.

Overall: It's a nice flavorful Porter that has enough small flavor elements to keep the beer interesting and keep the mind moving from one flavor to the next. I would drink it again and I would recommend it.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass.

Khaki to light tan colored producing head. Fine styrofoam like appearance, while settling at a small finger from two with a creamy puck. Dark and fairly surprisingly clear walnut dark brown and red body color, if hard to see through. Neat looking porter.

Soft bodied like aroma. Hints of creamy hazelnut like caramel a bit. Touch of milky chocolate, almost sensing like lactose in the flavor perhaps. Chocolate gets more of a whipped like tone after some time. Faint hint of spicy quality as well.

Very nice basic palate. Light bodied for even imperial but sticks to classic porter easy drinking body as well. A bit of crackling grains, but with much of the simple aromas flavor on the palate. A good spice note, almost like mulled cloves and nutmeg slightly but not as strong in flavor. Good amounts of silky but milk chocolate flavors, with a small underlying bitterness. Muted char, and a bit of coffee pot grind makes an appearance as well.

A pretty well rounded porter, doesn't seem to hint at much spicy rye character to me though, which probably makes it a plus.

The beer pours a very nice looking, creamy light brown that is pretty appealing and doesn't dissipate very quickly. The beer itself is a a good dark chocolate black with a bit of a nice brown hue to it.

The smell and taste are good but the taste is a bit more interesting and delicious. The smell has a very nice milky cream smell to it along with some light to moderate rye notes mixed in with a decent chocolate bit to it. The taste is much closer to a velvet chocolate cake than the smell with more present rye notes that give it a nice spice note. The finish is good with a nice lightly roasted and bitter malt note.

The feel is good and what really sells the beer. It's very smooth and creamy with a bit of surprising thickness to it. The carbonation is light but still manages to give a lightly dry finish.

Overall, this is a pretty good beer and worth getting as a dessert beer.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and an opaque consistency. There was a half inch of foamy, off white, fairly long-lasting head. Average lacing.

S: A decent, but slightly underwhelming, aroma of chocolate, malt, rye, and coffee.

T: Tasted of a hint of coffee (could have used a little more), some chocolate notes, a lot of malt, a tinge rye (not as much as expected), and some light spices (a little pepper) mixed in. A solid enough flavor, but like the aroma it's somewhat lacking. It feels a little muted. I might have gotten an old bottle, which I hope is the case.

F: A good amount of carbonation with a dry, lively finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This is an uneven beer in many ways, but still drinkable. Worth a look.

Poured a black body with large tan head that dies slow and the aroma is more toasty than anything but hints of chocolate are noticed along with a little spice. Thick, medium to heavy body, tastes like spicy chocolate and has a peppery finish and is an enjoyable beer.

Rawfish! This bottle is the last from a recent trade, an extra. People from all across the country send me ryes. I like those people. 22 oz. bottle split with my wife, dated 10/18/16.

Black. Nose is rye spiciness + bitter chocolate, along with faint roast.

Haunted Stars has more rye in it than rye does. The first sip yields a burst of rye: spicy, tingly, sharp, & for a bit I just revel in the rye & ignore whatever else is lurking. Reluctantly, I note there are other things: bitter chocolate, bitter roast, with a shot of chocolate milk on the finish. Feels lighter than the ABV, enough that I’m glad I’m not sitting at a bar with keys jingling in my hands.

This is a porter only in the loosest sense of the word - rye is the byword here. And it’s a good one. Scratch that. An excellent one.
