This groundbreaking export stout is brewed with house-roasted, bourbon barrel-aged coffee. Yup, the coffee beans were aged in a bourbon barrel. This mind-bending process imbues the coffee with the incredible flavor & aroma of a freshly emptied bourbon barrel, which carries over magnificently into this rich, chewy stout. Upon this toasted marshmallow of radness we added almonds, cocoa nibs, & sea salt, creating a creamy liquid s'more that might just blow the doors off your life.

A- This interesting looking Stout pours with beautiful fine bubbly layers after an initially aggressive pour! These layers provide a nitro looking super dense creamy head that is one and a half layers thick and has superb retention......this wee tight head is light caramel colored and slowly dissipates into a very thick one finger layer over the brew! The coloration of the beer is dark dark brown, with absolutely no light passing through it, and the lacing is most excellent as well. Very impressed off the bat!

S- I think I'm getting some of the almonds that are added to the brew, with hints of salted nut bar, milk chocolate cream, vanilla, yeast, mocha coffee and I don't know how to describe it, but the sea salt comes through on my nose as well....almost like salted burnt caramel....very enticing indeed!

T- Rather nutty right away, with both burnt and raw almond slices, huge caramel/toffee richness and the saltiness is very muted but noticeable chocolate, coffee, highly roasted barley malt and a tad of oak that brings out some char. Overall I like it and as it warms the profile starts leaning heavily towards and Italian biscotti....quite delectable actually!

M/O- Super creamy mouthfeel with wee tight bubbly goodness allowing the full nature of the flavors to come though.....drinkability is very high and the alcohol is perfectly well hidden.....with a pairing of chocolate or nuts, I think this would hit it's ideal potential! I personally really enjoyed this one and would absolutely have it again. Shame it is only a one off really....good job!

Overall, if you told me it was a draft guinness, I would've believed you, except for the heightened abv. All 7.5ABV was masked. Unfortunately, so was the taste & smell.

Black with a creamy off tan head.

Roasted malt and coffee.

Sea salt is way, way in the back. Can't really discern almonds or cacao, and there's a light bit of coffee. Something needs a punch up, maybe that's the base beer.

Barely carbonated but still comes off thin.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours black, appearing opaque black in the glass with a thin brown head that dissipates to patches with light lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, toasted almonds, cocoa and an odd burnt wood component that is different than the usual malt char. Flavor is dark toasted malt with the same unusual burnt char from the aroma, toasted almonds, coffee and mild chocolate, light saline. Finishes with nutty coffee, almost a peanut butter profile. Medium bodied, a little lighter than I expected from the deep black color, but perhaps expected at this ABV. After a while, many stouts, even with adjuncts, seem to fit a distinct profile and if well made, taste exactly as I hope for. This one is off in its own world and in a good way. The burnt char is unusual, but fits the style and is well balanced with the other flavors. The almonds smell toasted, almost fried with an unique umami sensation. To be honest, they taste a lot like peanut butter, although there is that distinct bright almond note. There's a lot, maybe too much, going on here, but it all fits together and is quite flavorful. The only thing the threw me with each sip is the rather pedestrian body, perhaps because with this depth of flavor, I'm expecting an imperial stout body. Also missing is any suggestion of bourbon barreling from the coffee, perhaps because it is not a dominant part of the already complex flavors. Malty and nutty, with nice hints of coffee and cocoa. Well done.

Very dark, near black brew with an off-white persistent low foam. The nitro mouthfeel is really pleasing out of the can, it doesn't have to be the maximum fizz. Aroma of dark grains.

Flavor is vanilla and cocoa right up front. Dark caramel with some charred grain but overall very mellow. Just intense in a nice way. Sort of smoky in the aftertaste but not a lot of bitterness. I don't know about salt and almonds but there's some malty sweetness and something like toasted marshmallows. From the 16 oz can.

Very dark and even in my flimsy vessel there are a minimum of highlights all confined to the bottom rim. The head is noticeably small, though looks creamy, colored a latte shade.

My first thought is "lively aroma for a nitro brew". Amaretto, rich chocolate, sea salt, acidic coffee, and then a twinge of metallic gas. Vanilla and some wood develop.

I'm reminded of chocolate biscotti, and it's served with a cup of medium roast coffee. Maybe the coffee has just a touch of amaretto in it, or the cookie has some marzipan in there. There's a trace of salt throughout, but just like in baking it helps to accentuate the other flavors. Later on the finish becomes surprisingly Bourbon-y with a robust roast background.

This city is smooth to the point of flatness even for nitro. The body is thin, silky, and slightly drying.

I'm once again impressed by Modern Times. Thank you for continuing my Stout kick in style. Not every brewery can pull off a beer where all the additives are recognizable and cohesive.

The beer pours out a pitch black color, with a creamy off white colored head---------- the aromas are of coffee, minerality, sweet almond and light smoke----------- the flavors are of bitter coffee, amereto, salt and chocolate, the beer has a full mouthfeel with an overly bitter acidic coffee finish-------------- overall this beer was nice the nitro really helps give this beer a creamy mouthfeel, it actually taste like a cup of cold brewed coffee, a little to bitter for my taste though

Straight, vigorous pour from a 16oz can to a tall, narrow flute (Green Cheek pint). This has a canning date of December 28, 2017 printed in black ink on the underside of the can (“CANNED ON 12/28/2017 1726949”). Purchased from a cooler a couple of days ago, and straight to the fridge it went. Should be interesting—haven’t had a nitro beer in ages!

Appearance (4.75): This moves from a dark, chocolately brown to black as the nitrogen cascades slowly to the top, transforming a two-ish finger, dark brown sugar-colored, bubbly head to a whipped, unflinching, one-finger cap of foam at the top of the glass. The cascade effect is lovely, of course. I forgot how appealing nitro beers are to look at. As the beer moves on, the head leaves a handful of large, solid sheets climbing from the edge of the head to halfway up the glass.

Smell (4.25): Ooh boy, there is a LOT going on here: light milk chocolate (like 30% Lindt or Milka), floral, light-roast coffee, a smoky, kind of chicory-like aroma, marzipan, and a very nice, earthy backbone. Ultimately, the aroma rests on a close balance between smoky/roasty and earthy/floral. I really, really dig that—though I kind of wish the marzipan came forward just a smidge.

Taste (4.25): Here, the beer pushes cocoa powder, earthy and floral light-roast coffee, and finally a chicory-like bitterness on the back end. It starts out so, so smooth with cocoa and a touch of that light, nutty sweetness from the almonds, but then moves into a slightly smoky, somewhat roasty-bitter, and extremely earthy midsection, followed by a tingly, roasty bitterness, a quick flash of floral and citrusy notes, and finally resolving with an extremely earthy, somewhat smoky, slightly bitter finish. No booze. I do think the nitrogen flattens out the different flavor components a bit, but it also helps to smooth everything out in a way that it blends, rather than sticks out as a collection of individual characteristics.

Mouthfeel (4.75): Ungodly smooth. Go figure. The body is beyond velvet-smooth, washing over the palate with light, cool nitrogenation that foams up extremely softly—but with good volume. Creamy as all get-out. That said, the body, by some stroke of magic, feels like it falls easily on the light- side of medium-weight. The beer levitates, man. But, the smoky, roasty coffee helps to dry it out, rather than leave a beer slick coating your palate. Excellent.

Overall (4.25): I have pleasantly mixed feelings about this beer. On the one hand, it’s outstanding just the way it is. It has such a beautiful mixture of characteristics that adhere to Foreign/Export Stout while stealing moves from the American Imperial Stout’s playbook. At the same time, I can’t help but wonder what this beer would look like if it were carbonated, amped up a bit with ABV, and really went for American Imperial Stout territory. Would all of its little strengths be amplified, resulting in a beer that’s equal to the sum of its parts? Or does the nitrogen, smoothing everything over and together, result in something more unique that’s greater than the sum of its parts? I’d love to try them side by side. Definitely recommended.

The clean pitch black fluid is reflective and beautiful. The espresso foam colored cap is equally so as it stubbornly rests on the surface. It's smooth, tan colored foam looks like settled whipped cream on top of hot chocolate. The tightly combined bubbles spot the glass from head to toe.

Unlike it's patron ale, this version is subdued from the bourbon presence. Chocolate and roasted nuts dominate the air. The slightest sweetness of the booze struggles to cut through the decadent milk and dark chocolate, and the coffee stays smooth throughout.

Freshly ground and lightly roasted coffee start the show. Creamy chocolate plays the main role, and a roasted nut and slightly charred white bread support the cast. There is a mild tartness, and I mean MILD tartness that I can only assume is from the sea salt addition, but in no way screams salty to me.

The nitro contribution is obvious, as this ale is nothing short of decadent. It is so rich and smooth. The balance ebbs and flows, starting richly sweet from the dominance of chocolate, then toasty and bitter from roasted coffee and nuts. Somehow, it manages to have just a dry enough finish to keep you reaching for more.

This is a fantastic nitro stout. I can only compare it to Modern Times own Black House Nitro, and with this one can, I'd call it a toss up. It's a wonderful dessert beer or cold weather beer that I would buy again and again. Simply wonderful. Cheers.

Picked up seven singles and a 6-pack of Pizza Port, all beers I had never tried, on a recent trip to Trader Joe’s. This was their January release. Thought going in that it was going to be great. Gave City of the Dead a 4.01 back on April 13, 2015. This variant was nitro (generally not a fan) with cocoa nibs, almonds and sea salt. Sounded very interesting. Can called it, “This groundbreaking export stout is brewed with house-roasted, bourbon barrel-aged coffee. Yup, the coffee beans were aged in a bourbon barrel. This mind-bending process imbues the coffee with the incredible flavor & aroma of a freshly emptied bourbon barrel, which carries over magnificently into this rich, chewy stout. Upon this toasted marshmallow of radness we added almonds, cocoa nibs, & sea salt, creating a creamy liquid s'more that might just blow the doors off your life.”

Viciously poured a black color with 2-to-3 fingers of khaki tan frothy head, that creeped over the side of the glass. Calm setting underneath. Almost perfect foamy lacing. Perfect retention. (Sight - 4.75)

Smelled roasted coffee beans, cocoa nibs, dark chocolate, char wood, oats, vanilla, almond, marshmallow, chocolate milk, s’more and dark chocolate syrup. (Smell - 4.25)

Taste followed the nose. Big, rich coffee notes up front. Also dark cocoa nibs, vanilla, almonds, dark chocolate, chocolate milk, toasted char wood, anise, marshmallow, s’more, chocolate syrup and toasted earthy oak. Got that salt late, lingering on the tongue. (Taste - 4.00)

Full body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth, salty finish. (Feel - 4.25)

Just an outstanding beer. Great to see it in cans. (Overall - 4.00)
