Canned date 03/09/18

Appearance - Pours hazy and faded orange in color with an off-white, dense half finger width head. Displays sub-par retention before peeling back to a thin, broken layer of suds across the surface.

Smell - Fair aroma with light citrus and tropical character. Orange, apricot, mango and underlying yeasty dough.

Taste - Mellow citrus upfront before big juicy notes of apricot and mango kick in. Hints of pineapple acidity.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with fair carbonation. Slick texture makes this an easy drinker.

Overall - Pretty tasty hazy IPA with solid balance and juiciness. One of Modern Times better beers, IMO.

Canned on 03/09/18. Grabbed at Total Wine.

Pours a nice deep golden yellow. About an inch of frothy white foam and some nice retention around the glass.

Juicy, tropical nose. Pineapple and citrus really comes out, and there just a slight amount of bitterness in the finish. I get a lot of lemon and some grassiness in the aromas as well.

Again, a lot of juice upfront. Not as tropical, but lots of citrus. Everything from grapefruit to tangerine can be picked out, and it has a nice bitter hoppiness to balance out the flavors. Peach and mango are also hinted at in the profile.

Nice medium feel for a hazy, carb is pretty low but sharp. Very smooth, very juicy. Slightly sticky.

Canned on 3/10, consumed on 4/9 - poured from a tall-boy into my Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

Old gold body, turbid to opacity, topped a finger of papaya whip foam. Thick lather-like lacing; very good retention.

Dank and fruity nose suffused with tangerine, peach, and marijuana, with hints of wild onions and tropical fruit.

Herbaceous, sweet, fruit-infused palate with apricot and candy apple notes in the medium finish. Moderately bitter, faintly warming, and slightly sweet. Juicy with hints of Thai basil and quinine beneath the wave of orange and jolly ranchers.

Creamy, lush, faintly sticky mouth-feel.

Some nice gentle fruit character from the yeast here, although at the cost of attenuation, so the beer is a bit sweet for the style.

The beer pours out a hazy yellow color with 1 finger of white head-------------- the aromas are of orange juice, tangerines and grapefruit(light aroma)--------------- the flavors are of orange juice, orange zest, bubblegum, grapefruit and lesser mango, papaya and passion fruit(really juicy flavors)the beer has a full mouthfeel with a light grapefruit like bitterness on the finish--------------- overall this beer was delicious, a little light on the aroma but more than makes up for it in the flavor department

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a very hazy golden amber, looking like unfiltered orange and pineapple juice, with a two finger white head with great retention and thick lacing. The expected aroma of tropical fruit and light citrus hops, orange citrus, mango, pineapple with hints of light stone fruit. Flavor is tropical and light citrus and piney hops, orange and lemon citrus, apricot, mango, papaya and passion fruit. Finishes with solid mixed tropical and citrus fruit. Medium bodied with light to medium creaminess and nice mouth feel. A classic NE hazy IPA profile with a little more variety to the fruit flavors and a solid finish that has a moderate hop kick to it, which redeems it for me as I'm not fond of the purely juicy in this style. Kept my interest through the taste and entire can, so gets a fine score despite not being my favorite IPA style. These guys know how to deliver an IPA.

Straight pour from a 16oz can to a tall, narrow pint (Green Cheek nucleated flute). This batch was, according to a black ink packaging date on the underside of the can, canned on March 9, 2018 (“CANNED ON 03/09/2018 1608014”), making this can 15 days old at the time of consumption.

Appearance (4.5): This pours two good fingers of ivory-colored foam right away, capping a glowing, hazy, orange juice-yellow body that glows beautifully. The head dies down slowly, leaving tightly laced, leggy retention with wide, fragile collars clinging to the edges of the glass. It looks elegant and expressive and very much on point for (the hazy subset of) the style.

Smell (4.25): A bright, soft blend of ripe pineapple and champagne mango lead the way, with some musky papaya/terpy weed undertones. Some passionfruit and a a very light blend of rolled oats, pain de campagne, and baking soda biscuits form a nice base for the aroma, but it’s really dominated by that pineapple/mango front. The passionfruit comes forward more as it opens up, but it’s still generally a pineapple/mango show.

Taste (4.5): Ohhh, now this is crushable. The leading edge of the palate is dominated by minneola tangelo, or maybe a clementine/kumquat blend, but it’s quickly followed by a beautiful midsection of yellow grapefruit juice smoothed out by floral and passionfruit flavors, a little gooseberry, and a bright, lemony backside. The malt, meanwhile, props up the hops with a gently starchy, rolled oat and cracked wheat corn vibe. It’s reminiscent of baking soda biscuits, oat bran white bread, and a touch of sourdough. The finish comes through with limeade sweetened by ripe pineapple juice, and it lingers gently but falls off before long without any off flavors. No booze whatsoever.

Mouthfeel (5.0): The body feels a bit shy of medium weight, surprisingly, with a smooth, creamy consistency that’s only boosted by soft, pillowy carbonation that rolls in with a thick, even blanket of suds that almost never prickles—just a nice, even tingle as it settles in. It just foams up softly, carrying the beer away without protest as you drink. The body shows only a hint of starch, almost no astringency, and a soft consistency.

Overall (4.5): Uhh, this beer is fucking outstanding. It’s not as bombastic as some other American (D)IPAs out there—especially in the hazy category, many of which can be too starchy, retain too much hop burn, or emphasize the wrong parts of the hop profile—but it trades a good portion of that bombast for balance and drinkability. Like, it’s bursting with juicy hop character, but without melting your face. Meanwhile, the body and carbonation are put together so perfectly that they not only match the flavor and aroma, but emphasize their best characteristics. This beer is just so crazily good. Do I like American hops? Yes, but for the most part not as much as Pacific/So. Hemisphere varieties. If this were bursting with Motueka and Nelson versus Citra and Simcoe, I might be absolutely smitten. Very highly recommended.

Hazy golden sunshine color with a fluffy off-white head. The nose is a plethora of tropical fruits, with oranges most prominent, but also dank notes from passion fruit and mango.

The taste is all hops, with sweet oranges in the driver’s seat, but there’s also loads of mango. Another excellent beer from a brewery that has never disappointed.

Poured from 16oz can into 20oz Sauvin glass. Canned on 3/09/18, so right under a week old.

Look: Pours dark yellow, with moderate opacity. Appearance similar to pineapple juice, just slightly darker. Has a juicy look to it. Formed about 1" frothy white head, but glass does help with head formation. Moderate lacing on the glass.

Smell: Citrus first, with orange, tangerine, and grapefruit notes upfront. Pineapple, papaya, mango, strawberry, and lemon hints are also present. Has subtle hints of lemon grass on the notes. Stonefruit aroma also present, with notes of peach, apricot and some plum. There also is a slight floral/earthy smell as well, but very faint. Really nice smell.

Taste: Follows the nose, but more pronounced. Orange, grapefruit, pineapple, mango and lemongrass really present on the taste. Aftertaste is where I get peach, apricot and mango. Pretty damn tasty beer, with a good "juicy" complexity. Not much going on hop wise, and no astringent taste or flavors. Light yeasty presence in the taste as well.

Feel: Most disappointing aspect of this beer, but by no means is terrible. Feel is light in body, with low carbonation and milk yeast composition. Spreads a bit thin across the palate, but isn't a deal breaker. Really smooth with slight creamy feel, but thin.

Overall: I was very surprised by this beer. I didn't know what to expect, nor had I heard of it. It is what I would hope a NEIPA encompasses, complete with a really fruit-forward flavor profile. Well done Modern Times! I would buy again and fully recommend. Cheers!

Can from ABV.

Hazy orange with a dense, off-white head with excellent retention and lacing, this looks great. The nose is soft, juicy, fruity with pineapple juice, peach juice, green grape juice and some melon. A touch of grass is present. The palate opens with a mild bitterness and plenty of hop flavor. Peach juice, mango juice, a little of pineapple juice, a little bit of grass and a flavor that vaguely reminds be of oats. The mid-palate is a little watery, with the sweetness of the juice flavor cut by a moderate carbonic acid bite. Drying on the finish, this beer is both, medium in body yet a bit watery.

Pretty much opaque cloudy yellowish brew, but it has an exuberance of white foam in the Tripel Karmeliet tulip. Thickish body but not gunky. Aroma of marmalade with some papaya. Seems to be all fruit and not any of the pine or resin flavors.

Overall this has the orange juice taste and is quite sweet. I think of the sweet peels of kumquats. Plenty hoppy, though, just not overly bitter. Still it's a murky flavor with some kind of chalky persistent sensation that is not my favorite. From the 16 oz can purchased at Barons Market on West Point Loma.
