Another thanks to Jay for this one..

Lightning Calculator pours that opaque yellow we've all grown to love, or at least appreciate. A sturdy foamy white head rests on top and laces moderately. Tropical fruit, pine, and a wet dirty sock aroma push through the juice below. The flavor follows, reminiscent of unripened fruits, and slightly vegetal elements, but both somehow in good ways. The feel is nice. Smooth but with a tart like bite and a decent amount of bitterness that is long lasting. Another fun experimental beer from Modern Times. If I see this again, I'm definitely picking it up again.

Thanks again Jay! Cheers.

16oz can, served in a snifter glass. Pours a creamy and hazy appearing golden yellow body, slight darker yellow hue, one finger white head, plenty of retention and lots of lacing. Smell is grapefruit, tropical fruit, a bit of lemon, touch of caramel, light resin. Nice freshly squeezed character. Flavour follows; grapefruit, resin, a bit of melon, light caramel and touch of straw. Not very bitter, but there is a fair bit of resin on the finish that complements the freshly squeezed grapefruit. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, good carbonation, mild bitter zest with a touch of resin on the finish.

Poured a turbid golden orange with minimal white head but left a consistent sheet of lacing as it quickly disappeared from the glass.
Smells is tropical fruit with an underlying resinous pine.
Tastes follows, I'm getting guava, papaya, a little zesty citrus all riding on an earthy, resinous pine. Nice malt backbone.
Medium to full bodied, oily coating, Medium carbed with a slight prickle on the tongue.
Overall another tasty one from Modern Times, I see seeking out more of these in my future.

Straight pour from a 16oz can to a tall, narrow pint-flute glass (Green Cheek nucleated pint). This has a canning date of January 3, 2018 printed in black ink on the underside of the can ("CANNED ON 01/03/2018 09:00947"), making this beer a bit over five weeks old at the time of consumption. It's been refrigerated consistently.

Appearance (3.75): Three fingers of finely crackling foam rise off of the pour, capping a hazy, unfiltered honey-colored body with deep orange undertones. It dies at a somewhat slow pace, leaving fine, delicate patches of lacing characterized by big, thin bubbles. The ABV may be affecting the lacing, but it's still pretty.

Smell (4.5): Big, big notes of gooseberry, macerated kumquats, and passionfruit juice jump out of the can and the glass, bolstered by navel orange flesh and mango sorbet. Without a doubt, the passionfruit and gooseberry really dominate the hop aroma, suggesting a really fruity Marlborough sauvignon blanc, painted over a canvas of country white boule.

Taste (4.5): Ooh, on the palate the beer veers toward cara cara orange flesh, passionfruit juice, and slightly underripe pink guava-along with pink grapefruit pulp. There's a big, dank undertone here that kind of explores the space between diesel and pink grapefruit juice, anchored with a light caramel note and buoyed by bright, slightly spicy bitterness dominated by key lime juice and grapefruit zest. I'm really, really into the way the alcohol adds a new depth to the passionfruit and grapefruit present here. Meanwhile, the malt offers a nice body for the hops to drape themselves over; it's characterized by silky oats and cracked pale barley, showing a faintly chalky baking soda biscuit flavor with light caramel notes sprinkled in there. The booze is there, but definitely not in your face as an autonomous component-it's woven into the fabric of passionfruit, dankness, and light toffee. It's integrated fairly artfully. I really dig this beer!

Mouthfeel (4.25): Big, smooth, and silky, the body feels slightly on the full- side of medium-weight, with a big, pillowy carbonation that occupies a lot of real estate in short order before foaming up and washing away the fullness of the body. In its wake, it leaves palate-scraping hop oils and booze, along with a hop-oriented burn way in the back. The effect is to allow the beer to finish much lighter than it should, given the size and composition of this beer. Definitely drinks like it's 8.5% ABV, in a way that feels appropriate.

Overall (4.25): This may not be the single most well-rounded or masterful (D)IPA experience, even in the realm of NEIPAs, but it's deeply satisfying as a hop bomb. It strikes a nice balance between smooth lupulus juice and palate-scraping American (D)IPA bitterness, offered up in a hazy, juicy, smooth and full NEIPA package. Definitely one of the better West Coast New England-style (D)IPAs I've had-but I'm also a whore for New Zealand hops. Recommended!
