Midnight black opaque body with a beige collar. This beer is so smooth it is silly, malty foremost, barrel character is solid, yet it isn't super heavy or sugary, perfect for a dessert pastry porter. Maple and vanilla star in the nose with chocolate, bourbon and a hint of caramel. Taste has more barrel backing, but still adjunct forward for sure with a really nice maple and vanilla combo integrating in a full and cooling way, chocolate, malts, pecan, almost a hint of pretzel help contrast and balance out.

22 oz bomber into a snifter

Crude oil appearance, viscous as hell. Candied pecans all over the nose, along with anise and oak. Tons of vanilla and caramelly sweetness on the palate, as a chewy complexion compounds all of the flavors. Oak aging works to dry the palate, some, but low carbonation allows for its sweet residuals to cling seemingly indefinitely. Properly hopped, and warming booze helps its drinkability.

Borders on a pastry stout and classic BBA. Not sure why this was dubbed an imperial porter rather than a stout, other than perhaps what went into the wort…end result is a big chewy, sweet, BBA stout.

Pours a dark cola brown. A finger of mocha head. Nose is chocolate sauce, roasted nuts, vanilla and sweet maple syrup. Taste is muddled between the flavors, maple syrup and chocolate being the most pronounced. Not much barrel presence. Feel is full and oily. Decent beer.

650 mL bottle. Black body, no head. Smells of bourbon, chocolate, nuts, lots of booze. Tastes of bourbon, chocolate, rich fudge and nuts, sweet maple, but not too sweet. Medium heavy and boozy. Just about the maximum amount of rich sweet booze I can handle, but it's very good.

4 November 2020 - Beer #205

Price: $32.25 at Modern Times Beer - Belmont Fermentorium in Portland, OR

Appearance: 4 - poured thick from the bottle. Not much head, and it's distinctly Brown.

Nose: 4 - smells great, but it's mild. Mostly vanilla.

Taste: 4 - A LOT of flavor here. I get all the adjuncts except the chocolate. It's not amazing, but it's really good.

Mouth: 5 - as thick a porter as I've ever had. Tremendous.

Overall: 4 - an extremely tasty and enjoyable pastry porter.

Cheers!

2020 edition: double-aged in Spanish brandy and maple bourbon barrels with coffee, vanilla and pecans - 13.1% ABV.

Poured from 22oz bottle into stemless tulip glass. Virtually no head - medium viscosity legs. Smell is delightful; coffee/donut shop aroma with slight earthiness. Taste is divine! Like drinking a maple donut!! Mouthfeel is exquisite as well; rich and decadent. May be a tad on the sweet side - but still amazing!

This is such a fabulously engineered beer! All adjuncts command attention - but not one overwhelms the others - they all play very nicely together.

Another knockout effort from Modern Times (and Bottle Logic)! I particularly like that they used a porter as the base of this beer.
