Glossy black with a fluffy dark tan head settling to a thick curled collar.

Hot and boozy, this delivers almond marzipan and tons of peppery barrel that I might enjoy sipping on a cold evening by a fireplace with some artisanal cheese nearby, but as it is I was not expecting this level of dominating heat and it's significantly interfering with my enjoyment.

16 oz. can. Black with a small khaki head. Smells of bourbon, maples, vanilla, and sweet. Some hazelnut. Doesn't scream it, though. Tastes of stronger hazelnut. Sweet maple. A little roast. Bourbon in the back end. Sweet vanilla in the back end. Heavy and sweet. Boozy. It's slow to drink, but tasty.

2020 version poured from fridge temp. Pours black, minimal coffee head, nose of warm barrel and sweetness, taste follows - nothing really stands out get vanilla, maple syrup and barrel, but no hazelnuts. Feel is lucious, minimal carb, near perfect. Overall good stout, let down by no hazelnut flavor, but the feel is incredible for this type of stout, viscous, coats the tongue and minimal carb. There is warmth from the barrel, but not hot for a 14% stout.

Quarantine day forty nine: talked to my mom from ten feet away. First time I haven’t reeked of her perfume after seeing her in, well, forever. 22 oz. bottle reluctantly split with my wife.

Boderline Vantablack, what I take to be thick bubbles turns out to be a massive yeast booger. Nnnnnnaaaasty. Head vanishes in minutes. The nose brings (in order) whiskey, hazelnuts, & a gentle sweetness that I can imagine is syrup. Not bad.

Modem Tones – Bourbon Barrel Vanilla, Hazelnuts, & Maple Syrup is smoother & better integrated than annealed glass. Nothing stands out, it’s just a perfectly mixed batch of stout, vanilla, nuts, vanilla, nougat, with a mid-palate that is an Old Faithful of rich, dark cocoa. Whiskey & oak are low & slow on the finish. Decadent, & does not show the alcohol level at all.

No edges, just a slip-and-slide smooth barrel aged stout that doesn’t quite reach the rafters. Very good beer.

On tap @ Other Half Brewing.

Pours pitch black with no head at all.

Provides the full package on the nose, ranging from toasty coconuts to alcohol soaked hazelnuts, dipped into milk chocolate. Offers molasses, old oak and layers of chocolate pralinées. The bourbon is there as well, it doesn‘t overpower anything at any given point, but produces a fantastic richness of aromas on the nose.

Almost no carbonation is left in this, while the beer‘s heavy body gets complimented by a great smoothness. The barrel is there, it definitely got a nice alcohol bite, smacking on the back end of the tongue in an enjoyable fashion.

Tastes of boozy, melted chocolate, driven by an oaken dryness, additional coconut and glazed caramel. Among this uprising sweetness the maple manages to shine through in a nutty, earthy fashion, from which the hazelnuts benefit in a great way. Then there is a coca-cola like peak, which pushes a little to far, overpowering almost anything else in this. Finishes still overly sweet, but the barrel manages to produce a more pungent, dry alcohol bite, allowing a light note of the hazelnuts to return.

This is just too sweet, it lacks of roasty, charred malts to balance out its massive body. The barrel is well appreciated though, since it manages to work as a counterpoint to the pastry part of the beer.

This was super tasty. The barrel aging did not stand out to me, but rather the Vanilla, Maple Syrup and Hazenuts did.

A really well rounded brew. Im not really a hazelnut person and I felt the notes were really muted. Each of the components comes and goes in small doses with the vanilla almost yielding a subtle kahlua thing. All the adjuncts are of high quality. Overall the alcohol bite was low and for this being young I can only imagine good things here on out. Barrel presence is nice moderate mouthfeel.

650ml bottle, snifter glass. Dark black body, opaque, one finger mocha head, good retention, no lacing. Smell is big vanilla ice cream, whiskey aroma, slight boozy heat, sweet maple throughout, mild nuttiness that isn't too sweet. Good balance, big thick vanilla sweetness. Flavour follows, sweet vanilla and maple syrup sweetness, whiskey, vanillin, light brown sugar, big chocolate fudge, a mild bit of nutty hazelnut. Mouthfeel is full bodied, thick and creamy, fudgy with a nice sweetness from the chocolate, vanilla and maple. Lighter but still appropriate carbonation for the style.
