Style: Oatmeal Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
It’s so great that you like coffee. I just love that about you. Speaking of which, you’re holding an oatmeal coffee stout positively redolent with coffee aroma and flavor. It’s not acrid. It’s not astringent. It doesn’t taste like that brown puddle at the bottom of the office carafe at 4pm. It kind of tastes like chocolate covered espresso beans, only drier and more like beer. It’s the full-blown coffee beer experience in a sessionable-ish package.

Type: 16-oz. can
Glass: 0.5L mug (16.9 oz.)
From: BevMo! in Mission Valley (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $9.79 for a 4-pack
Purchased: April 26, 2014
Consumed: April 26, 2014
Misc.: Use by Aug. 16, 2014

Poured a pitch black color with 1-to-2 fingers of tan head that dissipated rather quickly. Average amount of spotted lacing along the sides of the glass. Below average-to-minimal retention.

Smelled deep, dark, coffee malts, coffee beans, dark chocolate, light smoky woodfire, burnt marshmallows, toffee, caramel, fudge, dark cocoa and roasty nuts. Pretty damn bitter. Just a fantastic smelling coffee stout.

Tasted pretty close to the smell. Got rich coffee malts, coffee beans, smoky fire, dark chocolate, fudge, toffee, caramel, dark cocoa and roasty nuts. That’s all good, but it seemed a little artificial to me, which knocked it down a peg or two.

Full-to-medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth finish.

I really liked this beer. Would love to have it again.

16oz can from Noble Grains NYC on the UES
Pours a dark brown with minimal light tan head, smells like rich cocoa and roasted coffee beans, creamy mocha latte, tastes like chocolate milk that finishes with a mild coffee roastiness that lingers, feel is light and smooth. A diner coffee stout, warming, comforting, and sweet.

As dark in color as the name would suggest, this beer had little head and smelled strongly of coffee. It tastes like coffee and chocolate but is a little toastier than many similar stouts, almost like s'mores.

Pours clear, dark brown in color with 1/3 inch head. Taste is dark roasted coffee, cocoa, caramel, and light oats. The coffee works well with the other flavors and never overpowers. Nice and smooth easy drinker. One to reach for if I wanted a beer with just a hint of coffee.

Pours black with a tan head. There is some light residual lacing on the glass. The beer has a really nice balance of flavors from the malts and the added coffee. A really great drinking beer though the mouthfeel is a bit thin.

16 oz can poured into a Anchor Steam glass. Smell is Coffee, Coffee and more Coffee. Taste is Coffee up front, maybe a slight hint of Caramel. Overall I liked it very much. I would buy this again.
