Fortunate IslandsFortunate Islands

Brewed by:
Modern Times Beer
California, United States

Style: American Pale Wheat Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Fortunate Islands shares the characteristics of an uber-hoppy IPA and an easy drinking wheat beer. A massive dose of Citra and Amarillo hops gives it a blastwave of tropical hop aromatics: mango, tangerine, and passionfruit all leap out of the glass. Brewed with 60% wheat malt, Fortunate Islands also has the mild, nutty malt backbone, reasonable ABV, and restrained bitterness to make it an outstanding session beer.

Type: 16-oz. can
Glass: 12-oz. mug
From: BevMo! in Mission Valley (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $9.79 for a 4-pack
Purchased: April 26, 2014
Consumed: April 26, 2014
Misc.: Use by Aug. 15, 2014

Poured a honey, caramel, semi-clear color with 2-to-3 fingers of frothy white head. Nice amount of uneven layered lacing along the sides of the glass. Above average retention on the top all the way down.

Smelled sharp grapefruit, tropical hops, citrus hops, floral hops, grapefruit rind, tangerine, orange and Amarillo hops (I am real bad at knowing exact hops, so the can helped me here). Either way, just fantastic.

Taste wasn’t quite as good as the smell. More resin and skunkiness than the smell. Got bitter grapefruit, resin hops, tropical hops, citrus hops, floral hops, orange zest, tangerine rind, honey wheat and caramel.

Light body. Oily-to-thin texture. Average carbonation. Refreshing, abrupt finish.

Just a really good beer. I loved it. Can’t wait to have another.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #85 (Feb 2014):

Tropical, Hoppy, Wheat, Crushable

Named appropriately, this beer opens up with big fruity, tropical citrus notes. Stone fruits, mango, and passion fruit on the tongue. Hoppy but not bitter. Some leafiness and hint of dankness. Slightly wheaty, husky edge. Nutty and sweet malts provide balance. Palate is left wanting more. This is an outstanding hybrid beer (American Wheat Ale meets IPA) with an insane level of drinkability.

October 25th, 2013 - Fortunate Islands has a lovely name, and a the flavor is oddly nautical, keeping with the title. The smell is, well, curious. Ever tried steamed crab with Old Bay seasoning? I find some of that in the nose, and I love it. It's savory but brings the crab sweetness too, all bundled into the beer in a way that hits at the scent without making this a weird seafood brew. The flavor is more traditional, resinous and hoppy, almost standard in it's approach. The hops profile is clear, but thick and sweet, and losing some of that fascinating oceanic smell.

I LOVE this beer! It is a citrus-y, tropical fruity, yet hoppy, wheat beer. ... Let that all soak in for a bit. Just a really enjoyable -- and surprising -- drinking experience. Highly recommended.

Probably my favorite wheat beer I've ever had because it tastes like a tropical pale ale. Real nice hop flavor, very smooth drinkable and refreshing.

I loved this hoppy tropical wheat beer at Hunaphu Day 2015. This was refreshing on a hot florida day. Very good beer.

Can dated 12/12/14, poured into a snifter 2/1/15.

A- Darker copper body, lighter than most wheat beers. Two finger white head, good retention time, thick lacing.

S- Sharp pine aromas mellowed by sweet caramel malt. Tropical fruit, but more resinous smelling than aromatic.

F- Very grainy, sweet pale malt evoking grains and caramel. Not as much of a hoppy presence as in the nose. Fair tropical fruit presence. Quite malty, with a decent pine bitterness on the backend.

M- Thinner bodied, good carbonation and nice effervescence. Finish is a grainy sweet maltiness.

O- Decent, nice graininess and the hop aromas complement the graininess nicely for a wheat beer. Very drinkable and tasty.

473ml can from Brewdog DogHouse, Glasgow (£4.80):
Fresh with nice citrus & tropical fruits but it was quite a weak & bland tasting beer that could have used a kick. I definitely expected better from the brewery but this is now my second from them & I've not been a fan of either; what am I missing?

This stuff is dope as hell. Super hoppy; tropical as shit, bursting with mango, tangerine, passion fruit, guava, & load upon load of wet, weedy, mildly dank hops. Crisp body, drying finish from the wheat.

Reminds me of a miniature Alpine Nelson that you can smash all day with a little less of a hop presence but substantial punctuality given the lower ABV. I'm comparing the Zr1 to a Z06, here.

This blows Gumballhead out of the water by a light-year or two. It isn't even close. If this is available to you & you aren't drinking it, get your head checked, son.

Clear 24k gold color, fizzy head, gonw within 60 seconds. Smell is citrus and topical fruit, dank, and an herbaciuos-ness to open the pallet. Taste is tropical druits, mango, pineapple, and citrus rind, followes by some citrucy notes, and closing with a botanical note. Malt profile sticks around trhougout, provising a balance of earthy straw and wheat notes with a heavy- hand of hopping.
Mouthfeel has a 'pop' carbonation is medium, and active bubbles stay around. Overall, a true west-coast style hoopy-wheat.
Pair with white fish, sushi, or delicate chicken-breast recipes.

Pour clear, gold in color with one inch head. Taste is wet hops, wheat, lemon, and other citrus. Super juicy and easy to drink. This is my first experience with Modern Times and I really enjoy this one. I should have picked more of this one up.
