Style: American Pale Wheat Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Fortunate Islands shares the characteristics of an uber-hoppy IPA and an easy drinking wheat beer. A massive dose of Citra and Amarillo hops gives it a blastwave of tropical hop aromatics: mango, tangerine, and passionfruit all leap out of the glass. Brewed with 60% wheat malt, Fortunate Islands also has the mild, nutty malt backbone, reasonable ABV, and restrained bitterness to make it an outstanding session beer.

Interesting take on the hoppy wheat.

Opens the 473ml can to pure pineapple. Poor's a cloudy dark golden colour with minimal head or lacing from said head.

In glass the pineapple is joined with hints of other tropical fruits and a hint on pine.

Smooth mouthfeel and sweetness from the wheat counter acts the hoppy character nicely to make nice drinkable beer.

Great patio beer for the hop head looking for something quasi-light.

Scored this for the first time from the Total Wine in Reno, NV. For as hoppy as they describe the beer, perhaps it wasn't the freshest. Let's delve into the review shall we?

Pours a golden color, slight wheat haze, small 2/7" white head. Aroma wasn't all about that Amarillo and Citra hop. Didn't seem that way at all. Good recipe, flawed execution? Or just big box store with no/little refrigeration and old ipa? Dunno man, I dunno.

Taste, more bitterness than flavor. Let's do the time warp. Carbonation is good, and the mouth feel for style is just fine. I didn't get much of that tropical and citrus fruit description. Just some wheat and bitterness. Kinda average from what I thought was a better than average brewery.

L: Poured from a 16 oz can dated 5/23/2017. Hazy light orange/yellow color. About 2 fingers of white head with minor lacing.
S: Lots of mango and lemon
T: Fruity with a lingering hoppy after taste.
F: Light mouthful with medium carbonation.
O: A nice beer from a style I've been enjoying this time of year. I don't see much Modern Times beer in VA but I'd love to get more.

Poured from a 16oz tallboy can into a clear glass nonic. Canned on 06/07/17 on bottom of can.

A: Hazy honey-gold with 2-fingers of foamy white head with average retention and spotty lacing down the glass.

S: Grapefruit and orange zest with lemon and soft pale malt, clean on the yeast front

T: Flavor is a little ho-hum and I wonder if I have a bum can here as the flavor and aroma are a lot less than I was looking for given the great ratings. Nothing wrong with this beer, and for the style, it is a banner beer. But the flavor is a combination of grapefruit and Valencia orange with some lime in the finish on the hops side, just a hint of grassiness and herbal character. The maltiness is a little bready but a bit bland. I don't get enough wheat character for my taste. I understand this is a hop vehicle but a little crackery wheat character would be nice. Yeast is clean and bitterness is low.

M: Mouthfeel is really light, bordering on watery. Carbonation is medium. Finish is moderately dry.

O: I think this can doesn't measure up to the two I drank from the can last night at a baseball game. I will have to buy this again and try again. Flavor and aroma just seem muted to me.

From a can. Hazy yellow with a good lacy head. Smell knocks you over, mango and melon hops. Wow. Silky feel, just a bit tart. Fruity hop aftertaste lasts forever. This isn't a local one for me but I'm impressed with this one and buy it when I can!

The slightly hazy clear golden colored beer pours out into a Duvel glass with a 1" white head that leaves a ring and lot of of lacing around the sides of the glass as it recedes. Sipping. leaves behind a few scattered patches of lacing.

The aromas are full of citrus, some tropical fruits and some light breadiness.

The flavors include the wheat bread background and some mango and some tangerine zest along with other tropical fruits. There is a bit of light sweetness from the malts and some noticeable bitterness to balance things out.

The mouthfeel is pretty much medium bodied with persistent noticeable carbonation. The finish begins as the fruit flavors, light breadiness and slight sweetness fade to reveal a persistent bitterness right to the dry ending.

This is a nice drinkable beer and I'll definitely be looking to have another (if I can find one....). In my mind it helps justify the Modern Times reputation for brewing very good beers. It is well worth a try, especially if you want a American wheat beer that has some definitely present and noticeable citric and fruity hops.

Poured a golden orange body with good head and lace. Citric, almost lemony aroma with some spices and hints of wheat mixed in. Smooth bodied and light, this beer has a good wheat twang with lovely lemony/acidic hops with peppery spice and a good balance due to some tropical fruit balance (mango sticks out). Not sure if more IPA or wheat beer than the other (probably IPA) but it's pretty easy to drink.

Hazy gold with a large white foam that settles to a blanket with a central bald spot.

On the nose are very light tropical fruit notes with orange, peach and wheat bread dough, but also some hints of cigar ash and rug.

Taste is bready wheat, light mixed fruits, and herbal leafy tobacco. Definitely not the unique and unusually wild but tasty beer that Gumballhead is.

Body is medium and frothy with a semi-dry, crisp finish.

Can dated 6/7:
Pours a hazy golden, turning it into a dark yellow gold. Head is white, and fairly fluffy. Lasting head produces some lacing.

Nose is a tropical fruit salad atop a grainy to lightly cereal backing. Not overpoweringly strong, but fairly robust papaya, mango, and a light tart pineapple edge.

Taste is similar but not quite as robust on the tropical notes. A cereal opening has an earthy to dry grass or grainy aspect. When the tropical notes come, they have a neutral bitterness to them that dulls them a bit. Still a decent profile, but a slight letdown from the nose. A slight spice comes in late as the flavors settle and the somewhat dry ending takes hold.

A nice beer. Not as tropical as one might think from the marketing, but why should it be. It showcases the notes well for a beer in a non-juicy way. Enjoyable all in all.

Modern Times - Fortunate Islands
5% abv - 5/22/17 - 33 days old
Purchased for $3.49 at Monde Market

A - lovely medium-orange body. Off-white head recedes rapidly. Definitely looks like a Weiss.

S - Heavy citrus, with some flowery notes that I can't put my finger on. Mostly I get orange and grapefruit though.

T - More mellow citrus, with a suprising hoppy kick.

M - light-medium.

O - Hard to pinpoint the intended style on this one. It comes off as a cross between an APA and a standard wheat beer. I very much enjoy the combination, especially with temps in the mid-80s today. Nice to be able to taste Citra in a 5% brew. I would say crushable, but I only have 1 so that's moot.
