Style: American Pale Wheat Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Fortunate Islands shares the characteristics of an uber-hoppy IPA and an easy drinking wheat beer. A massive dose of Citra and Amarillo hops gives it a blastwave of tropical hop aromatics: mango, tangerine, and passionfruit all leap out of the glass. Brewed with 60% wheat malt, Fortunate Islands also has the mild, nutty malt backbone, reasonable ABV, and restrained bitterness to make it an outstanding session beer.

For the style, this beer is outstanding. It looks beautiful and is very light, but has some definite character to its taste. The nose is excellent with tropical notes. I'm not sure if it's the subliminal message of the beer name, but the taste continues with a light wheat taste and a tropical punch of hops. All in all, as good as I've had of the style.

Pours hazy yellow. Big pineapple-guava hop aroma, slightly less but still fairly intense on the palate. Little to no bitterness, crushable. A truly fantastic brew.

Gorgeous golden hue with excellent clarity. A quarter inch of eggshell white is present. Moderate lacing. Aroma is wallop of citrus hops with faint pale wheat. The flavor is a sharp, bitter citrus hop flavor. There's pale wheat there, but it is a background note. The mouth is light, crisp, and smooth.

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottom of can says Canned On 05/25/15.

A- Pours a medium amber color with a 1/2 inch off-white head that retains decently before becoming a paper-thin ring around the edge of the glass and minimal surface foam. Not-so-resilient lacing leaves small clots behind.

S- Moderate hop character makes for a juicy citrus aroma

T- Nice, balanced taste of hops and wheat. So easy to drink and with plenty of flavor. Bitterness is mild but complementary.

M- Crisp and lightly sharp from the hops with medium carbonation and a light body.

O- A very crushable and tasty hoppy wheat that I could see myself drinking multiple of on the beach.

Pours a clear, inviting straw yellow color with a huge fluffy white head.
Smell and taste are both overrun with stone fruits, passion fruit, guava, apricot, nectarine, some husky wheat and cracker like malts. Hoppy but no lingering bitterness. A smooth and light bodied ale. 16 oz goes by so fast. So drinkable.

One four-pack in and I realized I forgot to review this. Which would be a shame, because I’m really digging it right now. It pours a clear golden-straw color with generous foaming. I love the aroma—it’s bold and big and vibrant and fresh, with bursts of melon and passionfruit. It certainly feels like I’m breathing in a tropical island. The flavor is incredible—you get the smoothness of a wheat-beer, with a clean crisp finish. No real bitterness—the hops are all in the aroma—but enough body to avoid that watery “session IPA” feel. They call this a hoppy wheat. I call it paradise in the glass.
