Brewed by:
Modern Times Beer
California, United States

Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
2014 Release:
Oneida is a vigorously hoppy, aromatic pale ale saturated with Hallertau Blanc, Cascade & 05256 hops, a new experimental variety. A stripped down malt bill keeps the focus on the fruity, complex, pungent hop aroma & flavor.

HOP VARIETALS: Hallertau Blanc, Cascade & experimental Hop 05256
MALT VARIETALS: Two Row & Carapils

2013 Release:
Oneida is Nelson-centric. The dark fruity dankness of Nelson hops from New Zealand give it an uber-pungent aroma, with the grapefruity citrus of Cascade providing a touch of balance. While more aggressively bitter than Fortunate Islands, Oneida still has a light body and moderate ABV. 50 IBU

Canned on date of 08/10/15

Appearance - Pours hazy and pale yellow in color with a white, half finger width head. Fair retention gives way to a thin, broken layer of suds across the surface. Lacing consists of small broken sheets and a few spots around the glass.

Smell - The aroma is delicate but rousing, with hints of citrus, mango and leaf. Faint bready sweetness.

Taste - Follows the nose. Soft, hoppy flavors that touch on white grapefruit and pineapple with lesser mango and leafy character. Faint white bread undertone. The finish is mellow pith bitterness that fades realtively quick.

Mouthfeel - Light in body with light carbonation. Smooth, slick texture that goes down quite easily.

Overall - Hmm, drinks more like a hoppy blonde than an APA, but a pretty decent brew all the same. It won't win over the hop bomb crowd, but those looking for a light, easy drinking beer with a fair amount of hop complexity could do a lot worse than this.

A pint can with a unreadable date code, but I trust the freshness and person that passed this along to me. Pouring it in a 13oz. tulip for the review.

Look- Pours a transparent brilliant gold with a finger of egg white foam.

Smell- A weak wiff of mild citrus and pineapple.

Taste- Passionfruit, pineapple and some floral notes in the finish.

Feel- Crisp and clean with a semi dry finish.

Overall- A crisp and flavorful session pale with enough hops to get your fix. The perfect grilling and or chilling beer without the side effects of it's bigger brothers. Yeah, I'm a fan of it!

Thanks to Cherche for this one from his recent Ninja box. 16oz can poured into shaker pint glass. Canned on 7/19/16. Poured a very hazy straw gold color with about an inch of white head that had very good retention, and light-moderate lacing.

The aroma was fairly subdued, very light grains, and a bit of citrusy hops. On the tongue though, the beer had more personality. The grains showed through to give a good foundation, the hops were brighter and crisper, and there was a bit of fruitiness at the back.

The body was fairly typical, a bit on the lighter side average for the style, was smooth across the tongue and finished clean and dry. Drinkability was good, my can was gone quickly. Overall, a nice, solid example of the style. Worth trying if you see it, not sure I'd put a lot of effort into obtaining it.

Nice biscuity, and bready malt followed up and slightly intermingled with a nice, smooth hop presence. Has a lighter body and mouthfeel, with some nice fruity and piney hops on the olefactories. Solid, Solid beer.

Pours a blew golden color with a large white head. Loads of carbonation and lots of residual lacing. Beer is very well balanced and easy drink. Great summer beer.

A hazy, creamy orange and very light copper in color. Creamy near-white head which leaves lots of sticky lines of creamy stick down the glass. Very pretty, and it immediately reminded me of Alpine Nelson, which is always a very, very good thing.

Expressive Nelson hop component in the aroma: grapefruit flesh, floral components, and a bit of a sweet, freshly-baked bread character. Very nice.

Moderately bitter with expressive Nelson hop flavors. Discernible. Crisp and very drinkable flavors.

Medium bodied, slightly creamy. Moderate carbonation.

Like Alpine Nelson Jr. I liked this one a lot. I would certainly love to see this one in cans!

16 oz can poured into snifter canned on 5/19

A: unbelievable clarity its so light you'd think it was a macro light in the glass very light watery straw looking, lively bubbles small tight head dissipates to a film around the edges

S: smells piney with a lot of that crackery malt smells a little peppery

T: some light almost grape like taste and then some of that earthy pine and then that crackery malt and then not much taste at all.

M: a tad watery finishes clean though not a lot of lingering aftertastes

O: Its ok but if I'm going to drink a session beer id rather it be citrus forward to make up for the watery taste. The hops aren't aggressive enough and neither is the taste I would not drink this again.

Pale yellow, hazy brew topped with a very fluffy snow-white head. Good retention and wide, thin fields of lacing. Lots of center-glass carbonation.

Big hop aroma immediately upon uncapping. Bright, indistinguishably fruity hops; light dank sweetness, tobacco, and earth; honey; straw; light caramel and bready malts.

Light but full-flavored, sweet, and incredibly dank on the mid- and back-end. Vague tropical fruits, honey, biscuit and bread, tobacco.

Surprisingly medium bodied, not quite chewy, but still drinkable. No sting, not particularly lively, but not flat either.

Easily the most full-bodied and flavorful "session"-level APA or IPA I've had. I'm not 100% on board with the hop profile, but it gives it a huge, interesting kick, and is well-worth seeking out, especially for fans of Mosaic and Citra hops (of which this beer is reminiscent).
