Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale
Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%
Availability: Year-round
Notes / Commercial Description:
Lomaland is an earthy, rustic Belgian-style farmhouse ale that's both complex and quaffable. It smells like hay, pepper, and friendly sunshine. Its dry, cracker-like body and lightly-hoppy finish makes it a beautiful compliment to food. We named Lomaland after the brilliantly crazy utopian community that was the first settlement built in Point Loma, the San Diego neighborhood where our fermentorium is located.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #85 (Feb 2014):
Rustic, Lemony, Earthy, Yeasty
It was hard to resist drinking straight from the can, but the meringue-like fluffy pour was worth it. A lovely rustic, farmhousey ale, with a lemony edge that pierces through earthy, peppery, hay, wheaty, green banana and yeasty flavors. It’s a bit too yeast forward, but Lomaland easily rivals many traditional Belgian Saisons.

Tastes more like a Belgian ale than a Saison.

Using a carefully controlled pour, the lightly hazy bright golden yellow colored beer pours out into a Duvel glass completely filling the rest of the glass with a 1 1/2" fluffy snow white head that could easily have foamed over the sides of the glass with a more vigrorous pour. The head slowly recedes leaving a sheet of foam on the sides of the glass. Sipping creates lots of small and medium speckles on the side of the glass.
The aromas are full of Belgian yeast with some lemony citrus and a touch of white pepper. There's also a bit of cracker like character from the malt.
As expected from the nose the flavors include a bit of lemony citrus, some white pepper. There's also a bit of sweetness and crackery malt character supporting the rest of the flavors.. The bitterness from the hops is way in the background and quite low. There's also a touch of earthy character from the hops in the background.
The mouthfeel is on the light side of medium bodied and has a clean slightly crisp feel from the persistent moderate carbonation. The finish begins as the crackery sweetness recedes, allowing the spicy citric character to then slowly fade as turns into a light, earthy bitterness that closes the semi-dry show.
Overall this is a well made, nicely complex saison that I'd be willing to have again. The various flavor components are noticeably there but none dominates at the expense of the others. That said it isn't going to replace Hennepin, Tank 7, Sofie or Saison Dupont on my shopping list.

Appearance: Way too much foam, at first, until I settled into a very gentle pour; a huge head covers the clear golden liquid and leaves strands of lace
Smell: Bready and herbal, with fresh cut grass, white pepper and cilantro tones
Taste: Bready, up front, with the grassy edge developing; cilantro and white pepper emerge in the mid-palate and lead to a rather herbal finish
Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with moderate carbonation
Overall: More of an interesting lawnmower beer than a Saison, I am afraid
Thanks, lincolnbeard, for the opportunity

Saisons are generally hit or miss for me. This is a hit. Maybe it's because it's bordering on a hef or because of my fickle tongue, but, overall, I like the slight funk, spicy kick, and lingering bitterness. Quality stuff that's worth trying.

Pours hazy, bright yellow in color, with one inch head. Taste is florals, hay, orange, banana, and light pepper. Very witbier like. Nice and light bodied. Missing some of the bite I associate with the style, but super easy drinking. I will get this again.

Pours a yellow gold color with a white head. Taste has some spice to the finish. A light easy drinking wheat style beer.

A: A clear, almost fluorescent, golden yellow.
S: Yeast funk, pepper, white grapes, and a lot of sweetness.
T: The flavor is what you might expect from a pilsener brewed with a Belgian yeast. This is more like a Belgian Golden Ale or a Belgian Strong Pale Ale than a Saison.
M: A bit syrupy.
O: I've liked everything else I've had from Modern Times so far. This is by no means a bad beer but neither my style nor what I was expecting.
