Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Lomaland is an earthy, rustic Belgian-style farmhouse ale that's both complex and quaffable. It smells like hay, pepper, and friendly sunshine. Its dry, cracker-like body and lightly-hoppy finish makes it a beautiful compliment to food. We named Lomaland after the brilliantly crazy utopian community that was the first settlement built in Point Loma, the San Diego neighborhood where our fermentorium is located.

Hazy lemon with a bone ring. 4
Bright citrus and a bit of field. 3.75
Cream of wheat, candied lemon rind, a bit of clove, little specks of stone fruit, a touch of tartness, then grass to end. 4
Crisp and light. 4

Saaz

Clean and well-executed. Low on funk; this is all about the straight Saaz lemon. Their session beer, I'm guessing, and it does quench. "Just" really nice. 3.75

16 fl oz tallboy can.

poured into HF wine stem.

Appearance: opaque golden yellow body with a bone white head. The head is creamy thick. Good staying power with the head and it leaves a decent amount of lacing on the side of the glass.

Smell: Wheat and cracker malts. Earthy, bright, light citrus (lemon) and floral. Well water mineralality is present as well. Light peppery yeast and the banana with clove is there as well.

Taste: The saison starts off with fruity yeast and bananas. Light bitterness in the middle which also lingers slightly in the finish. It has citrus/lemon hops with a hint of earth and floral notes. Hint of white pepper yeast character. As the saison warms up the lemon flavor comes to the forefront of the beer and gives the beer a little lemony tartness that was not present earlier when this beer was right out of the fridge; gotta love those Saaz hops.

Mouthfeel: light bodied saison with moderate carbonation. The body is light, bright, refreshing and snappy. The oats also add a little bit of creaminess to the texture to round out a very fine mouthfeel.

Overall: Gotta love a saison in a can for me because of the convenience of drinking a beer while fishing or other outdoor activities and because saisons are one of my favorite style. This beer has a fantastic mouthfeel which I feel is the strongest attribute of this beer. I think that modern times really brews an outstanding saison here and wish that this was a regular offering on shelves in my local beer store.

Pours a hazy, milky yellow with a loose, bright white head. Nose is very much reminiscent of a witbier - chamomile notes, coriander, yeast, wheat and a grassy quality. Taste consistent with nose - very subdued and akin to a table beer. Mouthfeel is light in body with an even, mild carbonation. Overall, quaffable but not much complexity for a farmhouse.

Pours hazy, bright yellow in color, with one inch head. Taste is florals, hay, orange, banana, and light pepper. Very witbier like. Nice and light bodied. Missing some of the bite I associate with the style, but super easy drinking. I will get this again.

From 04/29/16 notes. Poured from a 16 oz. can into a tulip.

Pours a hazy, straw yellow color with two inches of white head and moderate carbonation evident. Belgian yeast, spices, apples, fruity malts, earthy noted, floral, lemon zest, wheat, and pepper. Lightly tart almost in the taste. Light body and moderate to high carbonation.

Overall a nice beer, little heavy on the spice and pepper in the taste for me.
