Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Lomaland is an earthy, rustic Belgian-style farmhouse ale that's both complex and quaffable. It smells like hay, pepper, and friendly sunshine. Its dry, cracker-like body and lightly-hoppy finish makes it a beautiful compliment to food. We named Lomaland after the brilliantly crazy utopian community that was the first settlement built in Point Loma, the San Diego neighborhood where our fermentorium is located.

Pint sized can served cold into a tripel tulip. Canned 12/15/15.

Lomaland is a very pale straw colored ale with thick white head. It settles slowly and leaves a small bit of lace behind.

Aroma is mildly fruity, floral, and funky.

Flavor is sweet up front with with a hint of lemon. The middle is slightly funky with a farmhouse style yeast. Finishes dry.

Mouthfeel is light in body and nicely carbonated for the style. Good balance between sweet and dry.

Overall a light and drinkable saison. Low alcohol makes it session friendly and probably great on a hot summer day.

Pours a finger of head on a hazy slight straw body.
The aroma is pepper corn, lemongrass and grain.
The taste is mild grain, grass and a bit of lemon.
The texture is crisp and light.
It's enjoyable.

Interesting beer. Smells a bit funky, lemon peel. Has the subtle characteristics that are typical in hefeweizens (peppery, banana, clove). It is a refreshing beer and something that I would enjoy drinking more often.

Pours a clear yellow color with a thin foamy head. Head retention is non-existent. Pale farmhouse aroma. Very pleasant. Taste of bananas and clove, farmhouse ale. Light bodied. Little carbonation.

Undated can (but part of a fresh mix-pack) into a Burgundy glass.

Look: really reminds me of Orangina. Hazy light orange, minimal head.

Smell: banana, lemon, clove.

Taste: bubblegum, banana, lemon zest, white grape. Has a weird mineral water taste midpalate.

Feel: light, juicy, very drinkable.

Overall: this is a good saison, with a good flavor that was marred somewhat by the watery taste. Would buy again if I were in a saison mood.

L: Pours an extremely light straw color with a large head, good deal of haziness and excellent foam retention.

S: Bright and peppery, with heavy yeasty notes upfront and a bit of tartness. Strong hints of lemons and orange, and some sulfury yeast. The wheat is also pretty apparent and it smells like it may have been made with acidulated malt.

T: Classic saison taste profile. Hoppy and rustic, peppery with a bit of citrus. Wheat, yeast, water crackers with a dry hoppy finish.

F: On the fuller side of light-bodied with very abundant carbonation.

Overall: This beer has all the makings of a quality, drinkable and sessionable saison. I’m not blown away but I am impressed, and if I had ready access to it, I’d probably drink a bit of this in the summer months. Also great to see an affordable saison in 16oz cans!

Appearance - Pours hazy and very pale yellow with a white, 2 finger width head. Fair retention, leaving behind a thin, broken layer of surface suds. The lace is mostly spotty, and adheres well to the glass.

Smell - Clove spice and a bit of lemon rind. Hints of wheat and white bread sweetness.

Taste - Follows the nose. Spicy clove and lemony citrus hit first, with little hints of wheat and black pepper creeping in by mid-taste. Scant trace of unripened banana. The finish is mildly juicy with lemon, but fades quickly.

Mouthfeel - Light in body with light to moderate carbonation. A tad too watery, especially in the finish.

Overall - I can dig the flavor profile, think hefe with a touch of sourness, but the brew comes across as a bit watered down, especially in the finish. As such, it's a fairly average saison IMO.
