Glowing pale amber hue with a thin but lasting head. The nose is pretty outrageous; somehow it smells like peaches and vanilla. There's plenty of juicy tropical fruit as well, pineapple and mango in particular. The palate is similarly loaded with fantastic ripe fruit flavors, especially stonefruit. There's a touch more citrus on the tongue, and less of that crazy vanilla character I get from the aroma. Malt is virtually nonexistent, bringing little more than a gentle crackery backbone to support the hops. Absolutely stellar stuff and one of the more complex IPAs I've had in a while.

Pours a somewhat clear orange yellow color with a thin white head. Smell is dank and tropical. Taste is the same. Slight peppery notes. Some residual sweetness. Mouthfeel is a little thicker than usual. Good carbonation. Works really well with the tropical flavors from the hops. Overall, I love this stuff. So glad they canned it because this is even better than Blazing World.

Hoppy, tropical, and dangerously easy to drink. Kind of reminds me of Breaksides flagship IPA, only better. (and I hate admitting that) If you come across this beer, I recommend trying it. Very tasty. The only thing I don’t like is that the ABV is a little high for my taste, which isn’t a problem for most, but when I start tasting the alcohol instead of the complex flavors of the beer, it becomes a little much for me. Of course, all of this IPA stuff is highly subjective, and everyone seems to have an opinion on what one should taste like according to their preference. Solid beer though.

Canned on 11/16/15. Consumed on 12/03/15.

L - Poured into my swag Modern Times Nordic Gold glass, City of the Sun pours a deep gold with a slight haze of hop particles. An eggshell white head of foam sticks around for the duration of the beer, leaving rings of sticky lacing along the inside of the glass with each sip.

S - The aroma is bursting with sweet notes of melon, citrus candy, and tropical fruits. Some onion, pine resin, and blueberry-like dankness as well. Clean ale yeast and a sweet, bready malt base come through as the beer warms. Not much heat on the nose.

T - Bitter-sweet flavors of melon rind, citrus rind, and tropical fruits hit first. A cracker-ish malt backbone steps in, accompanied by an ultra clean yeast character. The finish is very dry, but leaves a blanket of deliciously bitter hop flavors on the palate. The 7.6% ABV is barely detectable.

F - The texture is full-bodied, oily, slick, and viscous. A perfect amount of medium-soft carbonation provides the right amount of balance.

O - Absolutely incredible. The description on the can describes the malt presence of this IPA as "barely there," but I found the sweet malt base to be a wonderful balance to the dense hop flavors and aromas. So intensely flavorful, clean, and well-executed.

Canned on date of 11/16/15

Appearance - Pours golden orange and slightly hazy with a bit of fine sediment floating about. The head is off-white and peaks at about a half finger's width before receding with fair quickness to reveal a broken, webbed layer of surface suds. Virtually no lacing, with only a few tiny spots here and there.

Smell - Orange, grapefruit, mango and a touch of mild pineapple.

Taste - Follows the nose. Juicy, tropical and citrusy hops. Orange, grapefruit pineapple and mango can be found here. Not much of a malt backbone. Nice hop profile, but it's rather one-dimensional, leaving an incomplete finish.

Mouthfeel - Light-bodied with moderate carbonation. Goes down easy enough.

Overall - Good brew, but has too much of a 'session' feel for me to completely love it. It seems brewers think they can do no wrong when using Mosaic, but this is a fair example of a brew that leans too heavily on the hop and disregards the balance needed to make a beer truly remarkable. There are comparable beers with a more complete profile, and for this reason I would not buy this again.

Aroma was nice, heavy on the mosaic. Flavor was crisp at first but then the whole thing went downhill. Can't put my finger on it but it had a weird aftertaste that reminded me of cats? and left me not wanting more. I ordered a Monster's Park with coffee (which was awesome), and the back and forth between those two made this one better, does that make sense? I guess what I'm saying is drink this side-by-side with Monster's Park w/coffee and you'll enjoy both. Cheers.

22oz. bomber into a Duvel tulip.

Pours a 1.5 finger foamy white head with great retention. Beer is a semi-clear copper. Lacing is thick and layered with fantastic cling. Pretty good.

Nose is outrageously aromatic as I can smell it as I'm pouring. Notes of citrus, papaya, starfruit and cane sugar. An appetizing tropical hop bitterness. Very nice.

Opens citrus, papaya, cantaloupe and starfruit. Juicy and fruity in the middle with a mellow cane sugar malt backbone supporting a burst of tropical hop bitterness. Sweet melon, papaya and more citrus on the finish with a resiny, hoppy aftertaste. Really tasty!

Light bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth and slightly bubbly in the mouth and goes down crisp and quenching. Finishes dry and acrid with a filmy, lingering, dry aftertaste. Drinkable.

A West-Coast style IPA for sure, this one gives its maltier side more than its due. The tropical fruit notes support the hop presence nicely but its the sugary backdrop that really serve to balance this out. Really a solid IPA.

Out of a 16oz can into a glass on the balcony in Pacific Beach at sunset. What more do I need. Great smell and like it says hoppy and juicy. Will have no problem finishing the rest.

Poured from a bottle into a duvel tulip

A. Pours a nice hazy amber color with a 2 finger white head. Nice head retention. Very nice cobblestone lacing.

S. Very hop forward. Tropical fruits. Grapes, mango banana, kiwi. Reminds me of Jai Alai.

T. Agreeing with the nose I get all the tropical notes. But then some pine and dank. Nice hop resin followed by a light bitter aftertaste. This isn't your bitter bomb. It focuses on the characteristics of the hops used and is delicious.

M. 5 out of 10 on body. Some mild carbonation. finishes clean. I would like a little more carbonation but not critical.

O. This is the best Modern Times beer i've had. And i've been impressed Modern Times in the first place. They definitely know how to make a "hop fruity" IPA/APA. But the dank notes in this takes it to another level. Loving this beer. I can't find much wrong besides the carbonation which in itself isn't a big deal. Being in Chicago I hope I can get this again. Prob cracked my top 10 IPA/ APA's. So many layers of flavor.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: Karl Strauss pint glass
From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $5.99
Purchased: Jan. 16, 2015
Consumed: Jan. 20, 2015
Misc.: N/A

Poured an orangeish, pale, hazy color with 2-to-3 fingers of khaki white, rocky head. Some light bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass. Good looking layered, spiderweb lacing along the sides of the glass. Above average retention. (Sight - 4.00)

Smelled a pleasant whiff of hops, including tropical, resin, Citra, Mosaic and sugary floral. Also pineapple, grapefruit, mango and tangerine, all juicy pulp versions. Very nice on the nose. (Smell - 4.25)

Tasted somewhat similar to the nose, reminding me initially of a stronger version of Blazing World. Specifically got tropical hops, resin hops, Mosaic hops, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, tangerine rind, caramel, nectarine rind and boozy bitter veggies late. (Taste - 4.00)

Light body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, bitter finish. Somewhat refreshing. (Feel - 4.25)

This was a pretty damn good IPA. But of course, Modern Times made it. I look forward to trying it again. (Overall - 4.00)

This has amazing color, aroma, and taste bursting with tropical fruit notes of citrus, mango, papaya, grapefruit, and a simcoe like dankness.

The only down fall on this beer is the mouth feel. The carbonation is not fully effervescent, it is somewhat flat tasting.

Overall this is an A beer, just fix that carbonation problem and it is a winner in my book. Its up there with Alpine ipas and blind pig!

a: its a hazy bright orange and burnt amber color. 1/2 finger solid tan head that looks like it could hold a small coin

s: sticky, juicy tropical fruits. pineapple, mango, passionfruit, strawberry followed by some danky earthy hops. at the very end of the smell here is a sweetness from the malt thats is a super sugary caramel aroma. very nice smell on this beer

t: the initial sip is full of deep hoppy and sweet flavors. right away there is that dankness, followed by a nice sweetness that is the combination of ripe mangos, pineapple, some mild (but nice) garlic-like hop flavors, and sweet malts. towards the end of the mouth i'm picking up on some earthy bitterness - like from a tea leaf. extremely well harmonized

m: its, surprisingly, on the heavier side. its still medium in the mouth, but has a syrupy quality that makes it feel full in the mouth. carbonation is on the lower side

o: another great example of a San Diego/West Coast IPA. tons of sweet tropical fruits that is balanced out by a large malt presence. really well harmonized, and it is extremely smooth drinking and has a great balance for me. i will say, if you are looking for an extremely bitter beer, this isn't that. it has a nice malt presence that is a great addition to the tropical fruit notes

More yellow and cloudy with a nice dense white head. Hop forward aroma with mix of juicy fruit with strong citrus and earthy grassy aroma.
Flavor mimics this with more intensity including more citrus (orange) and a slight harshness from the hops, which seems to bother me less than in some beers, maybe because the fruit is so nice. The earth, grass (and onion?) is there too. quite a mix and quite a blend.
Enjoyable fullness and softness in the feel. Smooth with a bit of a sparkle from the carbonation.
Good, not great, but good enough for giving it a go again.

Canned 1/14
Hazy good orange body. Lots of fluffy white head, clings to the glass.

Not a super strong nose but there’s some lime, mango, pineapple, and kiwi. Familiar malted wheat sweetness and edge.

Flavor is more citrusy and lime centric with hints of pineapple, melon and some more tropical fruit. Acidic fruitiness midway through paired with a restrained malt bill carrying some of that wheat crispness.

Frothy, pillowy mouthfeel. Nice medium dry finish with lingering fruity notes and a medium intensity bitterness.

I appreciate this beer being juicy but still bringing some hop bitterness upfront and on the finish. Fairly strong for an IPA at 7.6%. Hides the abv really well

On tap. Greater than the sum of its parts. Not too aromatic, fairly generic hops with a nice bready malt backbone. Balanced. Fresh. Dank. A bitter punch with a smooth dry finish. On the lighter end for body but not weak or watery.

Picked up a single from the Craft Beer Hop Stop 1-19-17 for $2.49. Canned in December 2016.

Beer poured golden orange with a nice white head that left lacing behind.

Nose is a wonderful bouquet of tropical and citrus.

Taste was mango, pineapple, grapefruit over a light malt body. Finish was a nice light touch of pith and resin.

Feel was medium bodied and refreshing.

Overall this could easily become a go to beer! Get it fresh and check it out if you like tropical IPA's!
