22 oz bottle, poured into a snifter at approximately 45 degrees F.

A: Pours a murky, inky brown, that forms no head at all at first, and then suddenly seems to transform into a Dr. Pepper just long enough to form a thin, fizzy tan head that quickly dissipates to nothing. No cap, no ring, nothing. A quick once-over with an iPhone flashlight reveals ruby highlights at the edges, with no light penetration in the body of the beer. There is no lacing at all - a common theme for Rhinegeist's dark beers.

S: This one actually hit me while the snifter was well away from my nose, with a blast of dark chocolate. Some dark stone fruits also swirl out of the glass, cherry and fig and plum, alongside a bitter loamy scent.

T: Definitely bitter and loamy, as promised by the nose - at first, the taste seems akin to sipping dirt and coffee. There are faint tinges of cocoa and fruit, but mostly the bitterness. This is, of course, disappointing to me as an avowed malthead and yeast fiend with an aversion to hop-forward flavors. As it warms, more roasted malt flavor comes out, charred grain and blackened toast, though the fruits remain masked beneath the earthy bitterness. If one is a fan of hop-forward stouts, which I am not, this might not be bad - it is one of the more balanced hop-forward stouts I've tasted. For whatever that's worth.

M: Fairly watery and non-sticky, this does not feel much like an imperial stout. It almost begs to be consumed swiftly, rather than wanting to roll around in the mouth to be savored.

O: If I'm being honest, in my opinion, this is just Rhinegeist's Panther porter with some extra hops. The look and mouthfeel are identical, and the flavor profile that I can detect beneath and around the dirthop assault is pretty much dead on as well. Given that this is billed as an imperial stout but drinks almost exactly like their non-imperial porter, it gets low marks from me. Will not repeat, and will not try anything else this brewery tries to pass off as a special or limited beer.

Enjoyed from the 22 oz bomber in a snifter, this fine imperial stout pours a thick black with a moderate tan head that dissipates to a thin ring and pooling foam with slight lacing. Nose of sweet dark chocolate and lots of roasted goodness with some dark fruits of plum and dark cherry. Flavors are straight forward sweet dark malts, chocolate malts, and some dark fruit flavors coming in through the back. Slick oily mouth feel is offset by prickly carbonation. Flavors and nose improve vastly with warmth, although liked it better on tap as a straight forward imperial stout/sweet stout. Nice.

Cheers

22 ounce bottle, no bottling date that I could find. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with not quite an inch tan head. Head retention is decent, but there isn't much lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like roasted malt, bittersweet chocolate, coffee, dark fruit (plums), molasses and some char/smoke. I think the taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but there's also some caramel and nuttiness noticeable too. It's a roastier stout, but the sweet flavors are definitely there. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's creamy and a bit coating with moderate carbonation. I liked this imperial stout a lot, hopefully I can find another bottle! $11.99 a bomber.

2014: Strong smells of coffee and chocolate. Great sweet chocolate on the front that dark roasted coffee on back end. Aged 1 year.

Look - dark black color with a great tan head with great lacing.
Smell - really toasty smell with slight cocoa
Taste - very chocolately taste with lots of toasty malt and you can't taste the booze.
Feel - great smooth creamy feel
Overall - great imperial stout but not worth the price.
