Pretty nutty & heavy on the amber malt - a little dialed-up compared to the German standards...has a pleasant dry Bavarian hop undertone. Not a stand-out but not bad

I had Franz on draught at a music festival in Cincinnati. It was served in a plastic cup. It pours a slightly cloudy, medium amber color with an impressive, bright white head and extensive lacing. The nose features dark bread, malt, nuts, and a whiff of caramel. As expected, the tastes include toasted bread, malt, nuts, and sweet caramel. The mouth feel is creamy and pleasant and the 5.4% ABV is just right for a Marzen. Overall, you'd expect a good Marzen to be brewed in Cincinnati with it's historically large German population. While there may be better examples of the style out there, Franz is certainly enjoyable. It paired nicely with Lebanese chicken falafel.

Description: Amber/orange color and slightly cloudy with a white head. Smell is malty, yeasty and sweet but without much presence or 'oomph'; pretty mild and not terribly appealing. Ditto that with the taste. Bland. Some yeast and malt with a slightly bitter finish but I couldn't really tease out anything meaningful or enjoyable. Tasted like an upgraded Budweiser. Body and carbonation were both just sort of medium and forgettable.

Overall: 3.5 (This beer is average and I would not likely drink it again) This was lame. I don't know that I've ever had a really good or exciting Oktoberfest beer and this certainly wasn't one. When the best reason to drink a beer is, "Oh, I see it's the time of year when these are on the shelf again. Well, guess I'll give one a try", you can probably pass and not miss anything.

12oz canned 7/19/17 poured into a .5L krug at fridge temp 5.4% ABV 20 IBU. The beer pours less than bright but not hazy and orange amber in color. The head is short lived, off white and no lacing is left. The aroma is pretty pronounced caramel. Taste is sweetish caramel upfront giving way to a nutty middle. The finish is medium dry with a lingering yeast taste that is barely there but not quite right. Mouthfeel is on the thin side of medium in body. It is adequately carbonated but lacks smoothness. Overall, not great. It's easy to drink but if you start picking it apart versus a dozen other marzens, it's a bottom half placer.

12oz can, dated 080416 SCHÖN TAG NOCH
A - frothy off-white head caps a hazed deep amber colored beer
S - earthy, toasty grain, spicy hops, yeast
T - spicy yeast, earthy hops, caramel and toffee, bready toasty grain, slight fruity esters as it warms - everything expected out of a Märzen
M - medium body, moderate carbonation, finishing modestly bitter, clean, and dry
O - good representation of the style here. Very straightforward but delicious at the same time.

Franz brewed by Rhinegeist Brewery, with an ABV of 5.40% This Oktoberfest brew pours out a golden amber color with a nice white head. There is also a decent amount of lacing to this brew. This Oktoberfest has the look of most Oktoberfest brews on the market, not saying that is a bad thing. The smell of Franz is rich with grains and malts. Some earthly hops in the smell as well. The hops are really mild in the smell of this Oktoberfest brew. There is a lot going on in this brew so far. Now for the taste, it is bold, but smooth with flavors. You first pick up on the grains and malts. Then you pick up on the mild earthly hops. Franz has a nice balance to it, there is nothing overpowering about this Oktoberfest brew. The mouth feel of Franz is Bold, Clean, Smooth, and Refreshing. This is a good Oktoberfest brew. Overall I'm giving Franz , a 4.50 out of 5. I would buy this brew again. If you are looking for a good Oktoberfest brew, look this one up. Rhinegeist Brewery, did a real nice job with this Oktoberfest.
