cool beer, the double barrel treatment is really interesting, one of the first big beers i have had from these guys like this, and the execution is really good, its just enormous and something i cant drink a ton of. i found it as much a barleywine as a belgian beer of any kind i am familiar with, super malt driven, dark and heavy and long cooked to me, maybe some abbey malts if i force it, but for me its more of a concentrated thing, molasses and brown sugar and dark bread, hearty as can be, nice at elevation in the winter. the red wine fruitiness is there in the taste for sure, a little tannic thing with it to let us know its wine, almost acidic for a second even, but its quickly replaced by heavy grain sugar, sweet oak, and rich whiskey, with notes of raisin and vanilla all over it, faint plum and even blackberry remain from the wine though, quite complex. i dont get a ton of belgian yeast on this or anything, more alcohol than yeast nuance on the nose, but i suppose its there. im not sure if this is separate from the barrel aged mastodon, or just another name for it, but its really great beer, a slow winter sipper, fully warming, and not as sugary sweet as a lot of these are in the end. open with a friend or three!

Among one of the Rhinegeist Brewery's strongest, most complex and richest offerings, it would be easy for the brewers to rest on those laurels right then and right there. But the culinary artists in them had a hunch that the beer was capable of more; much more. A long slumber in bourbon barrels and then a quick nap in red wine barrels turns this already behemoth beer into a beast.

Double Oak Mastadon brings a ruddy garnety hue to the eye. Soft on foam, the ale sits nearly cask still but shines with a swirl of brandy-like legging. A rich perfume of sherry, dark caramels, dark fruit and peppery spice all tingle and entice the nose as the barrel influences of whisky and wine begin to shine. A lavishly sweet taste coats the tongue with toffee, honey, chocolate ad candied nuttiness as the ale makes its first introductions.

As the decadent malts swoon the sweet tooth, the fruit and spice blossom on the middle palate, starting with the dark fruit medley of plum, blackberry, prune, raison, blackcurrant, black cherry, date and fig bring a cobbler-like taste but with a richer dried fruit savory sensation. Spicy with a rise of peppercorn, allspice and anise, the barrel presence looms with their own transcendent spices of red wine acidity, vanilla, toasted coconut, dried oak, almond and straight whisky.

Pleasantly oxidized, the port, sherry and madeira flavors come in late as the full bodied beer trends earthy with freshly hung tobacco, leather and an umami rich teriyaki-like richness. A long expression of whisky and wine outlasts the beer's more natural fruits and spices as the ale sips like barleywine but charms the senses in the way that only Belgian styled darker, stronger ale can.

Had on tap. Plenty of depth and complexity here, both from the barrels and from the base beer. Swirling layers include: wood, bourbon, port, grapes, plum, dates, tobacco, leather, vanilla, caramel, coconut, almond and a lingering sherry like flavor combo. Together in the taste they create a sneaky sweet concoction with lingering booze and leather. Smell is a myriad where taste is an artfully combined whole. Body is robust enough to carry all the flavor, while keeping identity in the style
